We'll have to see, I guess. The thing with the CPL clubs is that they will all be expansion teams. They probably won't be playing up to their full potential because they won't have had much time together. Without disrespect, I don't expect them to give the MLS teams too hard a run this year.

I don't disagree that CPL needs academies, but I think right now they'll be focused on building a sustainable base. There are other options. For example, the Ottawa Fury disbanded their academy teams and instead went to a model where they offered additional training to players from other clubs that didn't interfere with their team's training or games.

The CPL will probably reach out to existing local grassroots clubs and ask them to identify their best players for additional training. The grassroots politics will always need to be managed, and it's a lot easier to work with them if they don't feel threatened that the local pro club is going to steal away their best players.

There's also the fact that the CPL has taken over L1O. I expect that to lead to an easy transfer of players up to CPL clubs. I'm not sure what mechanism they can use - you don't want local teams Hamilton and York getting all the good prospects and TFC has affiliations with London and Windsor - but L1O could provide them with a ready-made farm system. That would be pretty good for the immediate future.

What about PLSQ? Or is the lack of CPL presence in Quebec a hinderance to that?

Now that CPL owns L10, PLSQ is a competitor. They could certainly set up a relationship with them, but I would think that setting up some L10 clubs near CPL teams would be a good way to jump start a U23 development system.

I wouldn't say that PLSQ is a competitor. As a matter of fact, Soccer Quebec is working with Bunbury Group to bring a CPL club to Laval and more clubs in the province down the road.

CPL went on record to say that they might acquire more leagues and create new ones. This implies that they might buy PLSQ at some point.

Like it or not, the CSA opened the door to the monopolization of pro soccer by the CPL in Canada.

I'm not sure if that necessarily is a bad thing. Having one league running everything from Div 1 to Semi-Pro Div 3 would make it easier to implement Pro-Rel if the time ever comes.

I could see CPL growing the Div 1 table to 16 teams while concurrently setting up a western Div 3 league and fortifying L1O and PLSQ. At some point, there would be enough Div 3 teams robust enough to take the next step up the ladder, at which point the CPL could relegate the worst teams that year and promote the best Div 3 teams to create two new Div 2 leagues - one East and one West. Pro-rel between the three leagues would occur at the end of each season from that point forward.

True. Might as well build on what already exists

If the CPL does eventually realize its goal of pro/rel in the distant future, something like this is how it will happen.

Considering the only reason Canada has 2 spots is because of CPL, seems only fair they get one.

The Q1 draw results avoided some conflicts in the GTA area.

Wednesday May 15th has Toronto FC vs Wayne Rooney's DC United at BMO Field

that same night Vaughan Azzurri of League 1 Ontario host HFX Wanderers

The next Wednesday (May 22) has the fixtures reversed but now York 9 FC hosts AS Blainville in their return match while TFC has the night off.

Now all the GTA mainstream reporters can't use the fixtures as a way of avoiding covering the York 9 game (wasn't expecting much coverage of Vaughan anyway).

Works out great for me as the only car wreck I was dreading would have been the draw coming out as both York 9 AND Vaughan hosting on the same night!

USSF has allowed amateur clubs to play in it since the US Open Cup was started.. They do have to go through a qualification process since there are so many, but they still have a chance to play for the national championship...

The Coupe de France has thousands of clubs, including clubs from Caribbean and Pacific islands that are nowhere near the main part of France.

This is going to be good, people think that the CPL clubs won't be so good vs. MLS, and that the CPL will take years to beat them, well we will find out, I think they could be better, if not now then soon, as they won't play an MLS style of footy, they will play a skill style, yeah even though they don't have the big names and money of MLS, they have unknown players who haven't had the chance to prove themselves, and people are underestimating this I think, as at least some of these players will be quite good, so look out MLS.

I hope the CPL teams do very well.

It will be a long time, however, before teams with budgets of $1 million can beat teams with budgets of $10 million as anything more than a fluke or because the $10 million teams played their backups.

I'm not saying all CPL players are bad, but CPL clubs won't start with many players who are good enough for MLS. Even if CPL clubs have impressive top players, the worse half of the starters and the bench could be way overmatched if the MLS clubs use their best players.

That being said, I’m sure there will be some upsets as MLS teams run out subs and reserves. Once an MLS starts mixing in more and more non-starters, they aren’t nearly as good (obviously).

It's not just the players though, it's the style, MLS physical style is pretty beatable with skill. CPL may have better coaching and probably better tactics too. Again with players though, at least some CPL players will surprise a lot of people, they haven't had the chance to shine, now they do, there will be some impressive skill here, CPL are going after more skilled players than MLS. CPL familiarity and cohesion will also help them greatly, the players and coaches are quite familiar with each other, unlike MLS, where clubs are quite international, players are in the CPL to play, not just earn fat paychecks and play lazily like MLS, we see MLS clubs get upset in the US Open Cup all the time, no reason why it won't happen here and I expect it will be even more regular, CPL is being vastly underrated, Canada has always played a lot of soccer, Canada is better at soccer than what has been shown, Canada has the talent, they have the chance to prove it now, so in the pretty near future I see CPL dominating this competition, when they do I don't know if we will ever see an MLS club win this again.
