We need a pipeline of 100s of players to get a top notch national team, nowhere near the dozens you mention.

Wrt playing hardball, of course they can as young prospects who fall within a team’s allocation zone have the choice of signing with their academy or not doing anything until they hit 18. That’s a lot of pressure for them to sign even a bad deal. I can’t remeber who the most recent example was but I recall Clint Eastwood staying how bad it was for a recent 18 yr old prospect to wait for 18 months or so.

Having another good option for elite players like residency would provide a level playing field for these prospects in their negotiations. All things being equal, I would guess that most prospects would much rather sign a reasonable deal with a DA academy.

Another option is to let prospects sign with any DA they’d like.

Booth is who Eastwood was referring to. He left RSL but has had to wait 18 months to join BM.

Has there been any talk about expanding MLS rosters or excluding counting HGs who are under the age of 18 or maybe even 20? That's the real limit for a team like FCD who right now could probably sign three to five more teenagers but don't have space for them on the MLS roster. So they're forced to wait if the kid doesn't want to sign a USL deal but he blows up this next season, gets his head turned by Europe and doesn't sign at all because the wait from 17 to 18 isn't that long in reality.

They couyld always sign them to a USL contract Like Philly, RBNY, LAG, and RSL currently do..........

Also, players cannot move abroad until they are 18, unless they have a passport through nationality.

1)attacking mid is where you would hide a young player if you were going to try. You wouldn't hide them in goal or the back for obvious reasons. Can't hide him as a pivot/dmid he'll be exposed quickly. Can't hide him as a striker because one of the first thing everyone looks at when a lineup comes out is who is up top and how will they score.

2)immediately into the lineup in chicago who are a BAD mls franchise and probably one of the 3/4 worst.

its way too early to judge the kid and its nice he has done well in camp cupcake that has that name for a reason. At some point though he needs on the pitch results a good camp isn't nearly enough to get excited. One could easily look at the otherway and say him being the standout when there are other guys who are much closer to helping the usmnt not standing out is a bad thing.

Chicago was a playoff team and finished 3rd in the east in 2017, which is when Mihailovic made 18 appearances as an 18 year old. Out of curiosity, how many 18 year old attacking players do we have playing significant minutes? I would say yes it is still wait and see if he develops into a true contributor, but I wouldn't be as dismissive of his performance.

no way 3rd in mls in 2017...isn't that the year they got killed in the first round? yeah not sure I would be thrilled with that. Great season though a goal and two assists really putting up brilliance really.

I am not saying the kid isn't the best midfielder the us has ever produced he truly may be. Until he actually does something I am not impressed. Also tonight no matter what happens I still won't be impressed he had to do something that counts against someone that is atleast average. When on the pitch with llegett, trapp, bradley, roldan, delgado....a slightly above average will stand out. I am old enough to remember a year ago when the top scout in the world said keaton parks was set to star for benfica this season because he had few average performances with the first team and he had sources who said benfica loved him and were holding off big clubs who were regularly coming to watch him....this year...he is now loaned out to nycfc lol.

    So Cal
Hid was probably a poor choice. Being on the left coast, I didn't see him much but I had the impression that he played somewhat centrally and was a big part of their offense.
Immediately back into Chicago this past year is definitely not the same as a team with higher level talent but I think that, combined with the fact that he was a starter in the playoffs says quite a bit regardless.

Either way, rightly or wrongly, I was struck by how highly he seemed to be thought of in Chicago. I thought he played fine tonight also but not enough to name him the second coming of "insert name here".

He was getting fast-tracked until he blew his knee. He looks to be all right.

    So Cal
Now I understand your response a bit better. You don't really know much about Mihailovic and don't rate him. You are reading through things quickly and misreading them or misunderstanding them to fit your narrative that Mihailovic has done nothing yet to warrant optimism.

In 2017 he played 17 games, scored 1 goal and got two assists. Your sarcastic response: "Great season though a goal and two assists really putting up brilliance really."

Unfortunately, everything must be put in context: he was 18. He wasn't starting the whole season...he had to work his way up the pecking order during the season. He only had 732 minutes for the entire season and 7 starts. To me, at least, 1 goal and two assists in 732 minutes for an 18 yr old midfielder isn't too shabby. He played well enough in those 732 minutes that Chicago started him in their first playoff game in which he was injured.

When @mattjo indicated that they were 3rd in MLS east, you misread it quickly and dismissed it because you were sure they weren't 3rd best in MLS but guess what? Mattjo was incorrect in the sense that Chicago was 3rd best in MLS (not just the east). Chicago and AFC had 55 points, but Chicago had 16 wins while AFC had 15. AFC had the better GD. Portland...first in the west had 53 points.

So, is Mihailovic our next world class player? Should he step immediately into the USMNT? This is still camp cupcake and time will tell how he turns out but if you didn't like him that is fine. Just say so. He's young, had a terrible injury and has a lot to prove. There are many legitimate reasons to argue against him being the second coming.

I am all for optimism that wonderful. My issue is for him to be something he'll have to do something. Hype/optimism do not impress me at all. I mean if we are going off hype/optimism you would have to think that his time will be short I mean with alex mendez coming through who has considerable more hype/optimism it just makes me thing either way there is no reason to worry about him at all.

Also third best record doesn't mean third best team those are two different things. They got slaughtered in the playoffs.

18 year old Tim Weah may beat out Josh Sargent for breakout player of the year! He came on in a 0-0 game today. A nice assist and goal later...….………..Celtic wins 2-0.

You also have to take into account the leagues. I think the BL is a lot more competitive than the Scottish league, where is always a two horse race.

its literally a once horse race look at celtic scores for the season. its a shock when they don't win by atleast two goals. they have a +43 gd which is amazing considering they have lost 3 and drawn 4 out of only 27 matches.

its good for weah to be there for the rest of this season but next season he needs to be somewhere better.

If Weah continues this torrid pace, he will probably be loaned or sold to a club on Bremen's level next Summer.

Sure...………………...but what a youngster needs to do on this kind of loan is make an impact. He's 18 years old. So far he's really been a standout performer, which could be a harbinger of things to come.

One can say the SPL isn't as good as MLS if they want (I'd argue that our champion Atlanta is actually better than Celtic.) But how many 18 year old forwards or attacking players had the kind of impact in MLS last season that Weah has had so far in Scotland? Not many. None?

There was a lot of skepticism regarding Weah out there when he was a part of the U17 World Cup squad. Folks didn't think he was all that good, and that his name got him thru a lot of doors. Even when he got some game time at PSG, folks said it was only because their top forwards were all out (which was true). But I think folks now can see with their own two eyes that this kid does have "something" about him. He's still raw, but there are a lot of tools there. And of course he's a different type of player to Sargent. It'll be interesting to see how they can complement each other.

Man, if we can get Reyna and/or Booth yo break up; Dest to break out; Richards to break out; Piere to commit; one of Steffen or Horvath to take their game to the next level; another forward and a CDM to break out; and all of a sudden; we have a really young and badass national team.

I agree with the first point, particularly in the bottom half of the league but think you’re way off base wrt Atlanta.

    538 global club ranking has

    Celtic @ 70
    Atlanta @ 178

Is it a perfect system? Nah but the gap between the two is too sizable to really consider that Atl is better than Celtic.

Anyway, lets not turn this into one of those "IS MLS as good as league X" threads. Its an impossible argument.

My point was simply that Timothy Weah is having an IMPACT on a club against adult professionals in a decent league. He's 18. There's no reason for us to try to diminish it or to marginalize it.

That's fine but your comment is catnip for the discussion you want to avoid.

On my end, thanks to many knowledgeable BS posters' repeated urging, I've moved away from is "league X better than Y" because other than the US, leagues are far less in parity and they are structured to have excellent teams that crush the rest of the league. Therefore it's much more appropriate to compare team to team (ATL to Celtic) than to compare MLS to SPL, which isn't particularly useful as a construct.

The kid is good, no question about it. Let's just keep our feet in the ground when talking about goal scoring in the SPL. I remember when Jozy was tearing it up in the Eredivisie and we all know how that ended up. I'm not saying Weah is anything like Jozy, Weah is way faster and has more moves in his arsenal.
