Didn't watch the whole game, only parts of it. I thought Yedlin was decent and did what is expected of a RB. Press ratings place him among the weakest in the team though. https://www.90min.com/posts/6283689...on-as-magpies-secure-shock-win-over-champions https://www.themag.co.uk/2019/01/gi...layer-ratings-after-2-1-win-newcastle-united/ Consensus seems to be LeJeune was their weak spot, though (the LCB).
All good - and despite the quote I wasn't going at you particularly, as much as musing about what the all-touch showed of his game. I think it's pretty clear now where DY - on average - is as a defender. He has some better games than other - and the moments of his picking the City attack pockets a couple of time, even if it was only to give up a throw-in in a tad-too-frantic clearance attempt, shows a good tactical adjustment from a couple of the games where NUFC tried to push DY and seemed to give up way too much on the right side. NUFC played a very "defensively attentive" game - (might remind some of the odd old USMNT outing - with strong keeping and tight, defend-first marking...) managed to squash the attack and still get forward enough to do damage. If anything DY was more positionally disciplined/aware than usual and helped keep City from getting their rhythm even after the early goal.
Whether he's good or bad; we can all agree he's a starter for Newcastle. And that ain't too shabby when we have like zero other Yanks in the PL
Wow how dare you disrespect bottom of the barrel Fulham player TIM REAM. Also just a hilarious side not, my auto correct wanted to change Fulham to shamefull HAHAHA
Haven’t watched it but it’s been 0-0 to this point. Too bad Almiron didn’t go over sooner. Hoping he makes a huge impact to represent MLS well.
Yedlin hanging in there. keeping it locked down on his side. Has put in some good crosses. 77' gone 0-0
Fair enough comment - to be fair - I watch every match of NUFC that is broadcast in the states. I still think Berhalter can work very well with him. Week in and week out he is under pressure in a very competitive league. Rafa trusts him.
My only issue with Yedlin is he gives way too much space when defending 1v1.. Considering how much speed he has, he should be much tighter to his man- he would be able to catch most attackers if beaten off the dribble. All that space allows attackers to pick out passes and it causes problems for his team.
Co-signed. The other thing is that he tucks in more to help out than I would like to see. But that’s almost certainly him following Rafa’s instructions. If Rafa didn’t like it, Yedlin would be on th bench.
Yeah sorry kicking a dead horse here. Preface this with I love Yedlin, but his hips are way to tight he can’t turn, or flip his hips in a phone booth. Staying off is a survival tactic.
2.5 seasons in with Rafa, another transfer window just closed with no right back brought in. Yeah, since he plays it the same way every time I think Rafa has told him what to do.
He serves with distinction. I still wonder what might have been had he signed with Roma instead of Spurs.
This!!! FFS this. Yedlin is the USMNT’s best outside back, at this point. Rafa might have the inside track on this and may be a bit more of an expert witness on this.
I think DY "lucked" into about the ideal situation - very good coach at a top league club who don't have the resources/will to spend enough to upgrade. At a less... uh... "frugal" club he'd have stronger competition. Under a less confident manager, he could find himself bouncing from bench to FB to RW and back. Sometimes players land in a good spot where they are the best a team can afford and better than what the team paid for them. DY seems to be in that spot for the moment.
Completely agree. I'm surprised Rafa doesn't bench him or try to fix his issues. He does offer quite a bit going forward and with recovery after an attack breaks down. I think the switch to 5 in the back has helped him immensely. Also, I've never seen a player look so fresh after playing 85 mins- he has an incredible engine.
The guy is a prototypical wingback who needs a RCB to help him cover the holes he leaves when doing one of his conquering expeditions.
I like DeAndre but I won't concede this point. He is good but limited by his limited skills set. I'd keep an open mind at this point.
Bottom line is, if we're playing with the likes of Yedlin and Robinson as our fullbacks, we need a dedicated DM. It's soccer 101.
