not really all the articles all tend to go back to return on investment and the salary cap he has to use in mls. there is no salary cap with the usmnt. Part of how he uses metrics is like Billy Beane. So a guy that costs you a million dollars a seasons and has a xg of 0.5 is a better value the a guy who makes four million and has a xg of 0.6 and plays the same position. With the usmnt you'd take the guy with xg of 0.6 so how he handles the data with columbus is very different then he would with the usmnt.
Surely you understand the nature of internet debating. Someone says that Berhalter uses metrics and half a dozen posters jump on the idea that he uses metrics and only metrics and players are chosen based on the output of some computer program. Of course in reality metrics are just one of several factors he uses in making decisions. That is unless he signed Zardes because his computer program told him that he needed a player unable to control the ball with his first touch.
He's a great player. Big teams are looking for a hole to fill; otoh, Roldan is the kind of guy whom the team builds around because he is able to fulfill many functions. He is naturally more valuable to an MLS team than he is to a big team. It's just simple economics. One thing that makes him so valuable is that he can both score and assist.
I would sit McKennie who is similar to Roldan in potential skills. Roldan has more concentration and purpose while McKennie is still trying to figure things out. Roldan has learned how to play different and varied roles in the course of one game at Seattle but needs integrration with USMNT soonest possible.
if his hold on the position is literally that weak then its a no always. I mean if someone said the match was tomorrow and you aren't sure...but today you are...then it has to be mckennie. if roldan can both 'score and assist'...he should've done it a lot more for seattle they could've used it.
Somebody posted here that Roldan has the second most assists in the pool last year after Ibarra. WS says he is a good finisher in their list of strengths. If you look at the miniscule p.t. he got under Sarachan (and previously) you will see him for a minute or two against Brazil and he provided a beautiful scoring opportunity which was wasted by Acosta or we would have scored a goal. It's a ridiculous strategy to deny minutes to a player who could ably sub in for McKennie just because only McKennie should have any minutes. This is a recipe for Couva 2.0. b.t.w. what is McKennie's position? I have no idea. People say we should play Adams and McKennie as dub 6's. McKennie doesn't play 6 for club and has done so only on a most rare occasion. The way people go about planning for Qatar you'd think the finals are coming up in June instead of the Gold Cup.
It's the right time to give Roldan a run, IMO. We're going to need a backup for Wes. Also, this Camp Cupcake may find us a winger. We need another one (besides Puli) and neither Saief nor Weah (a striker) are it. Even if we count Amon (who is, IMO, the best winger prospect we got at this point), we're still going to need a couple more. Green and Weah had good chemistry on the field, a few months back. Sadly, things have gone down for both of them, in club form, since then.
when are you going to realize that ws is garbage? its a metric that nobody knows exactly how its added up just that they come up with a number in the end it may take into account the number of letters in a players name. second most assists last year??? after ibarra.....if he is is second to a guy that isn't any good it probably isn't a good thing to use that stat as proof he is good. last season he had two assists all year and this year he had 7...I mean I assume is this year he was 'second' because there is no way two gets you the second most. roldan in 2018 4g 7a in 3444 min paul arriola in 2018 8g 8a in 2494 min according to ws roldan is a good passer and finisher...reality his style screws with these type of matrix. He makes safe passes and excel's at 2/3 tap ins for a great shooting percentage makes him look like a lethal sniper who completes a ton of passes. he averages less then a shot per game 1.3 key passes per game less then one dribble per game 1.3 times dispossessed on avg per game sound like a dangerous player to you? rarely shoots not a lot of key passes barely takes on defenders and when he does isn't very good at it. Oh and by the way his percentage is worse then pulisic and he gets killed for it and we don't have to get into the difference in competition. roldan just isn't good his game doesn't translate at all...he's played for the national team...did you watch him? the other issue is he is 23 this is who he is there is no next level for him. the other guys you like to mention are younger and have a chance to improve.
Berhalter is doing the two-step tango for MB90. It sucks that this what our national team has come to. a 2nd-rate prostitute for the old boys. Berhalter on December 31st, 2018 https://sports.yahoo.com/usmnt-stoc...tim-weah-josh-sargent-trending-200226756.html Bedoya: The 2014 World Cup veteran is coming off a terrific season for the Union, where his leadership on a young side was lauded by coach Jim Curtin. Still, he wasn’t summoned for the USMNT’s year-opening camp despite being younger than Bradley. Takeaway: “There were some guys that didn’t get included just based on their age that I think that perhaps if you were picking the strongest group you could have made a case for,” Berhalter said. Apparently Bedoya falls into that category.">Takeaway: “There were some guys that didn’t get included just based on their age that I think that perhaps if you were picking the strongest group you could have made a case for,” Berhalter said. Apparently Bedoya falls into that category. Berhalter for a recent article dated January 26th 2019: http://www.espn.com/soccer/united-s...defends-inclusion-of-quality-bradley-in-squad Berhalter added that when it comes to his player selections, he'll continue to look at the ability of a player rather than age. "If [a player is] good enough to perform and he can fit and execute in the roles and responsibilities that we have for that position then he should be able to play, whether that's old or young," he said.
Let's assume that Berhalter thinks he owes a favor to the old guard. And that bringing in this utterly second rate, if not third rate, version of Mikey is paying off that favor in a relatively harmless way. This is Kampf Kupkack, after all...... Then as long as he considers this a one and done kind of thing, and does not try to force Mikey into the team we have going for the Gold Cup, we can shrug this off as "the cunning of politics appears freaking everywhere, doesn't it?" piece of the crapola of life. But if Berhalter keeps bringing in MB, and keeps trying to force him onto the team, which would be an example of "there is no bound to the stupidity of men in this life", then we'll be about as whole a side as the Gerrard era Galaxy were. I will assume Berhalter is cunning, and not stupid, until the evidence of his actions says otherwise. By the time the dog days of August roll around we'll know much better what it is we are facing.
Gregg Berhalter addresses the media following tonight’s 3-0 win vs. 🇵🇦. https://t.co/QIkO1bbVkE— U.S. Soccer Men's National Team (@USMNT) January 28, 2019
I like Berhalter's interaction with the team. He seems very integrated with the players and not like who coach who sits on the sideline sort of in his own world. He seemed to be talking to the players a lot, even on the bench. I hope he keeps his players highly motiviated. The team has lacked drived for the past several years.
I didn't read to see if this was mentioned already, but https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...ts-panama-in-first-game-of-2019-berhalter-era says he's the third manager in the modern era to win his first game after Milutinovic and Bradley did it. Twellman claimed that none of Arena, Bradley, or Klinsmann won their first game.
MB played a very respectable game. Panama certainly was not the ultimate opponent, but one of the goals achieved was that the Berhalter era got started off on the right foot. MB, MLS players, a new era: Berhalter has a plan. MB has a role to play in it. I'm good with that.
I keep remembering that Oliver Bierhoff didn’t come into his own until 28 or so, then he exploded. Of course. Odds are lower with an older player
We are F*** if we are using metrics to scout the players. No wonder we have no freaking creativity on the USMNT. The only metrics that matters is the eye test.. We need to find players that have this kind of vision and accuracy at passing: No metric can measure this skill. We need players that can finish with power and good ball placing No metric can measure this We need players that can control the midfield and tempo of the game while getting the rest of the team involved. You can't measure this with metrics
I think one big takeaway from the Panama game as far as Berhalter is that while many were assuming he is a system guy and would thus just transpose his system from Columbus player for player onto the national team; this has not turned out to be the case. There are certainly similarities, but he showed that he understands that he needs to flexible with the players he has and not just use a strict single system and plug in whichever players are the best option for the roll. Personally, I felt this was really good news.
This sounds exactly like Arena some one game into the "Gerrard Era". I'm happy for you that you are "good with that". But, as I pointed out, perhaps we should see what happens by the time the Gold Cup is finished before we leap into being "good with" the "Mikey Era"
The difference between DS and Greg is that now Greg is coaching for his job. Its one thing when you say we are playing for 2020 but another when you coaching game to game. Greg must feel he need MB90 to win.
