Syracuse has lost out on very important recruiting. The DA/ECNL and National League events all passed and no Syracuse Girls are at school with no coach.
As I am sure you know there are no guarantees in college sports... but someone thinking he is a great hire at MSU probably looked at the 6 years he spent at Auburn and realized he was a part of unprecedented success. (elite 8 run, offensive stats that have been superb,-which he trained-as well as quality recruiting classes). I know the rebuttal, he was only an AC not the HC, and I give Hoppa a great deal of credit for the consistency she has had, but wouldnt you want an assistant that was part of a program with that success? And hopefully he has picked up some tips on running a successful SEC program from Karen, who has it figured out. (her coaching tree has some pretty successful branches) Lastly, your comparison to a 28 yr old female with only 6 years of college coaching is Apples to Oranges. If that we was his only experience then you'd be right to say maybe lack of experience... but your discounting his experience with the US National team (can you say relationships), his ODP Region staff experience (can you say relationships with coaches as well as some of top players in the regions), and his experience at the large texas club (relationships with club coaches, players, and knowledge of TX youth soccer). Ill admit only time will tell on the hire, but since there are no guarantees in sports, id take my chances with someone without HC experience that has first hand knowledge of winning in the SEC and has been where MSU wants the program to be.
Also noteworthy is a previous Auburn AC was able to land a HC opportunity at a Pac12 program and 2 successful years later moved to another Pac-12 and went on to win a Natty. Auburn seems to put out some good ones
Also of note is an Auburn assistant who was not successful at Indiana. The proof is in the individual, not the school they last coached at.
On my list are: Arkansas Pine Bluff Jackson State Northern Arizona Stony Brook Syracuse Texas Southern VMI Are any of these filled? Any others? (I try to stay current.) Additional info: Right now I have 26 positions having turned over so far, with 19 filled and the above 7 yet to be filled.
a Doctor is in the house @ Jax State. Props to whomever posted that rumor/speculation. Why aren't guys like Kulas and Miller begging Syracuse? Or do they know they'll be looking again in four years?
NAU should be announcing soon. Heard a couple PAC 12 assistants are in the mix. Stony Brook will also be announcing shortly. Heard about Tobias from Hofstra as a strong candidate who would be a really good fit there but no official announcement yet. Also in the mix were Sammy from the departing BC staff, Taylor from FGCU, and Kyle from Providence. As for Syracuse, who knows. Last time there was a coaching hire process that went close to this terrible I feel was Maryland. After the Maryland staff was let go in late 2015, they kept screwing the process up and didn't make a hire until 1/13/16 and in the end they were able to make a good hire by luring Ray Leone away from Harvard but had to pay big $ to get him. Maryland lost all their recruits during that time. While Maryland struggled in 2014 and 2015, they certainly haven't recovered since and Leone has had to do a complete rebuild and a 4-10-5 season this year shows they still have quite a ways to go. Syracuse is even further behind. They lost their last game on 10/26 and let go of Wheddon the next day. Meaning as of this Saturday they will have been without a head coach for 3 months. They obviously had no plan in place. What I don't get is they limited themselves to just females and none have panned out at this point and they're still not looking at any male coaches yet. This profession of college women's soccer has about 30% female coaches, so they know they have a massive rebuild to do and aren't even opening things up and looking at the majority of coaches that could help that struggling program. If they don't hire the assistant at this point then my guess is they will hire some no name female who is like a second assistant or a club coach and somehow and that will set that program even further behind. May be the worst search committee process in women's soccer in a long time.
Your seriously mentioning Kulas and Miller for Syracuse!!??!! Now if the question was, who are two of the biggest douchebags to be head coaches in division 1? Then your posted would make sense.
It sounds like they want a female head coach and don't care too much about short-term results, which are virtually guaranteed to be bad no matter who they hire. After all, they had terrible results with a male, US Soccer-connected head coach for years.
Tobias Bischof at Stony Brook https://stonybrookathletics.com/new...es-tobias-bischof-as-womens-soccer-coach.aspx
Very good hire for Stony Brook. I thought he might of taken Syracuse but he turned them down as well apparently
Syracuse tried to get Hofstra HC, would seem weird that they would then try to get the associate HC from that same school. Then again, they have called everyone else and have been turned down so maybe they did.
Does everybody turn down Syracuse because it's unwinnable, unrecruitable in the southern public school based ACC? It's a fish out of the water, Neither here nor there, caught between P5 publix (too pricey and too snowy) and northern privates (too big, football). It gets crushed in the former and dominates the latter. It has no peer, really. I guess Notre Dame (BC has Boston) is the closest and they kinda stink but have better name recognition.
Syracuse is officially the biggest disaster in history, regardless of who they hire. Let's just think about this. Over 3 months since letting previous coach go. Since then... Signing day has passed (2018 roster - 23 players with 2 seniors) no announcement if anyone has signed for 2019. 1 announcement on their website about anything, and that is going on 3 months as well. Recruiting wise: have missed 2 ECNL events, a DA event, a Canadian event in their backyard, CASL, two national league events, the list goes on. 21 of the 25 jobs that opened after Syracuse have been filled. With 2 of the other 4 remaining being opened by that coach leaving for one of the filled jobs noted. The team has been back to school for a few weeks training with out a new head coach. Scheduling? Do they have a spring schedule? Is 2019 complete, have they lost games since there is no head coach? The ACC has adjusted their schedule since the job has been opened affecting non conference. How is this even possible? Are they struggling that bad to even get anyone to talk to them, or is what they are saying what is stopping anyone from taking the job?
There are a lot of mid major head coaches interested in the job and non are getting a look at it. Looks like they want someone with power five experience from a school whose name they can sell to look like a big hire. After the Wheddon disaster I don’t think they should be overlooking anyone who is competent that can improve the program regardless of power five experience or not.
It's even worse than that. They knew going into the season they would likely be letting him go. He was on some last-chance performance requirements which that team had no realistic chance of achieving. By the end of September, they'd lost their first 4 ACC games and it was clear they weren't going to be anywhere near the ACC Tournament. So they've had forever to prepare for this, and have still mucked it up.
The only coach who could sell Syracuse is Anson Dorrance. And his name would only last a few years. You could plop the SC guy, or Dambach, it won't make a difference. No name recognition. In women's soccer, the clothes do make the man (or coach).
Syracuse just doesn’t have the local player pool to help the school. Has to be international coming over and they won’t like the weather/location. They will over pay for a coach now. They will finish last in ACC and most likely be hurting for a long time to come
