I think I heard the draft pick trade as:

    DC gets:
    Revs 2nd round pick 2019
    Revs 3rd round pick 2020
    Revs 4th round pick 2020

    Revs get:
    DC 2nd round pick 2020

Did I hear that correctly? If so, WTF?

That's what I heard as well.

Seems as if the Revs aren't particularly enamored with the remaining pool of talent.

Contradicting the MLSsoccer.com article which gave the revs a C+ grade in the draft, the revs are among the draft's winners according to this goal.com article.

I did find it odd for a draft loaded with fullbacks the revs didn't bite on any.

Revs passed today, and also obviously didn't rate a player that highly.

Eight out of 24 picks in the third round were PASS.
Thirteen out of 24 picks in the fourth round were PASS.

    Talk about irrelevant...

As far as drafts go, this is evolving more toward the baseball draft, rather than the NFL or NBA drafts, where you expect your first round pick to be a starter, or at least challenge for a starting spot, and later picks have at least a shot at making the team. The NHL is a bit different, where some players from Juniors and the top college programs can be immediate first-teamers, and others get sent back to their junior club or the AHL for more seasoning. In any case, these guys are kept in the pipeline and if they continue to develop and have a good season, they are brought in to camp and are given another shot.

The baseball draft is essentially a prospect draft, where you get raw talent, a lot of the time straight out of high school, and they are sent to the minors straight away. They usually spend several years in the minors and the best end up working their way up the ladder, while many others fall by the wayside.

The MLS draft can be similar to baseball or even hockey, but when some clubs (ahem!) don't have reserve, "B" or affiliate teams or even working relationships with lower-level clubs, there is no place for these players to develop. Imagine if the players the Red Sox developed in their farm system either had to make the 40-man roster or get cut when they were drafted 5 years ago... Mookie Betts would be, well, doing something other than playing baseball for a living.

This really should be how the MLS draft works. Draft a bunch of players (maybe even high school age), send them to a minor league affiliate and see who makes it. I think a lot of talent gets lost in the current system.

It gets lost because "the current system" is weak in some places and non-existant in others. Players improve by playing, and for the Revs that either means being young enough for their academy or good enough for the 1st team with no options in between

Kind of my point, but I don't think it's purely a Revs problem.

I agree with your basic point that MLS and the Revs should have a better system for bringing along drafted players, especially from the extra value of developing American players in a professional club environment. However, this is a very low priority, in my mind. The academy system is many times more likely to produce a star (or even a starting level) player as MLS is currently constituted, so this is a better place to put your $$$. If the goals of the academy and a reserve/minor league team for draftee development coincide, great, but otherwise spend on the academy.

Of course, ahead of both of these is investing in better scouting and international player acquisition, as the majority of difference-makers in MLS have been from this pool. Penilla (or Schelotto) >> Fagundez (or Yedlin) >> Bye

Only in the sense that it's similar to the late rounds of these drafts. Since 2015 or so, it seems that most of the good and all of the "can't miss" prospects are gone, and you are drafting diamonds in the rough.

This talk of developing players reminds me of issues with MLS for my son. He played at a D1 school as a keeper(3 x he led them to National tournament) also played in several semi pro teams. I believe it was around 2005, he was living and playing on an NPSL/ PDL team, the coach for Rapids (who coached NE prior) called up my son and 4 other players to train with the team. He cut the other guys, but, kept my son training, and an occasional Reserve game. At that time, he had about $85K in student loans, and if the Rapids gave him a contract, he would have earned $17,500. Fortunately, he fell in love, moved to NYC, and started a career that would pay off his debt. My son told me about the NYC Div 1 Rec team players that never played pro, but he felt are good enough to play at the MLS level today. The issue holding them back, many are in banking/finance and earn significantly more in the private sector, and can't afford to play American soccer.
Why am I bringing this up, my son (now 35 and still playing) occasionally would show me pictures of his or opponent teams, and I have recognized more than a few retired MLS players who are now playing for fun. A championship game last year had 4 MLS retirees under 35 and they lost to another team of unknowns. I know the Rev's don't have the same proximity to NYC as those 2 teams do, but that league has some real talent, and a smart move would be to send a scout into the city a few times a year to review some foreign and American players, who might consider the step into MLS.. (sorry if this sounds like a humble brag)

Being an American soccer player is kinda like being a poet. You do it for the love of it, and it's really tough to make a decent living, unless you are at the top of your field. It's good that these guys who are educated, smart and ambitious can make a good living in other fields, but it's easy to see why some guys turn down a pro career at MLS wages. Sure, it's a lot better now than it was 10 and certainly 20 years ago, but when you think of it, the lowest man on a MLB roster makes what would be a generous DP salary if he were in MLS.
We're in total agreement here. The young would-be stars are more likely to come via the Academy route, but the late bloomers and college players or guys who are just not quite good enough to get MLS minutes need a place to develop. Not having a solid structure in the USL where these guys can play completely hinders their chances and makes the draft as a whole seem like a total waste of time, especially for teams like the Revs.

I really can't fault the Revs for passing in Rounds 3 and 4. I have to believe that Firmino and Rennicks are better than (or at least as good as) anyone they would have picked up late in the SuperDraft.

I think they should have taken a shot. Worst case scenario they cut them in Feb. Best case they find another Larentowitcz or Dorman

Anyone know why DeJuan Jones is not listed on the Revs website?

Probably because he hasn't signed a contract yet,

Buchanan was GA, so he already has an MLS contract.
