This is Alfredo's chance. After being left out due to poor performance, and given a run against Bayern in a Telekom cup game where no one expected anything nor cared much, Fredo gets a real shot to come back to the team if he does well enough today.

So far so good. He was part of the two best moments for Fortuna. He's playing the LCM position but making forays into Augsburg's area.

There's a pigeon on the right side of Augsburg's half that just refuses to leave. The players so far have been nice enough, avoid hitting it, but the bird is asking for it.

Morales a bit less active in the second part of the first half, but has a good understanding with Stoger and Usami. And now Fortuna scores a goal! 0-1.

Fredo not involved. Usami to Lukebakio to Ducksch who scores a header.

Fortuna defending a lot this second half, Fredo basically a 3rd CB but with reduced mobility. So far it's been one of his better games, but still doubt it's enough to get back his starter role. More of a rotational starter.

Augsburg tied in a FK, 1-1.

Morales out in the 74'. Pretty invisible in the second half, seems he got tired. Not really fired up about his chances of returning to the starting lineup.

I was watching a stream with no narration and no time/goals. Looks like I missed the second goal. Wow, that's unlucky.

PS: I stopped watching at the 74' when the match tracker said he was being subbed. Looks like they were wrong. The goal was in the 89'!

Highlights. Important win to give them a little breathing room at the bottom of the table.

I think Morales is closest to the Augsburg player who gets a header off a corner at :24. It looks like they may have been playing a zonal scheme. His assist is at 1:38. Wonderful pass.

I follow the subs on FlashScore and they had him going out at 74', so I just turned it off (was following other four games besides this one). They were wrong, and looks like he had his one good moment after I stopped watching.

Maybe I should refrain from watching this guy, it seems whenever I'm watching, he's quite poor. I missed the Fortuna vs. Hoffenheim and he scored in that one.

It's not trashing. It's dumb to have no standards. I praise the ones who deserve praise (McKennie, Pulisic, Sargent, Horvath, etc.) but I will not lie and pretend guys like Morales, Miazga, Ream, Williams or Saief are any good. It's ethically incorrect.

Also, when I praise them, you know they did something good, I'm not just giving praise because they are Yanks. Today, for example, Morales had a good first half, then disappeared for the 30 minutes I saw of the second (except for a couple of decent defensive plays). Considering what he did after I stopped watching, expect to see him start again.

    “It’s ethically incorrect”

Is it? Is it a moral imperative to trash a guy for being steady. You said he “disappeared” in the 2nd half EXCEPT for a couple of nice defensive plays. So he was steady and also contributed some key defensive moments? I think it’s “unethical” to praise Josh Sargent INSTEAD of Morales. Though I’m pumped for Josh, one has played a couple of matches and the other has played and started matches in the Bundesliga for a “couple” years. Let’s give some credit where credit is due. Guy has never really been given a shot for the Nats.

sometimes I am guilty of being on harsh on players too - so I'm certainly not a rah rah cheerleader type or advocating you should exclusively be one either - but it seems to me you put out A LOT more negative energy on players than positive...across the board. Once you've settled on an opinion of a player - that's it - everything is colored with that lens.

what's the benefit? so you can say I told you so when they don't pan out in europe? yeah - newsflash - most players arent going to make it to the top- there's way more players than there are spots.

I think american players have it tough enough making it abroad without the doubting of their own fans. take miazga for instance - YOU don't rate him but many do - why go out of your way to incessantly dog him online when all he has ever done is play hard and pretty well for the USMNT, MLS, NAC etc...?

I've praised Sargent for his off-the-ball movement. That's rare to see in a Yank, abroad or in MLS. Most of our players are quite average (or worse) in off-the-ball movement.

Morales case, you have to understand why he got benched. It was the right decision by his coach, since he was doing absolutely nothing to help come out of the back playing. He was acting only as a passive defensive ball-recoverer, when he was supposed to help in transition. The team got better after his benching for a reason.

He did the full job yesterday, in the first half. He helped in the recovery and moved the ball forward, something he was not doing before --in the 'Gladbach game he was mostly doing back-passes. That's the one that broke the camel's back with Funkel.

But he was once again passive in the second half. At the end of the first half he had done enough for me to write he was likely to be back as a rotational starter. By the 74' when I stopped watching, once again I had doubts about him.

That assist was great, though, and IMO good enough to get him more starts. I'm glad for the guy, but that he had a good game yesterday does not erase the several poor games in a row that got him benched. This game in particular was crucial, it was his chance to redeem himself, maybe his last one after not even making the squad many times.

That's why I kept updating the game here, something I seldom do. I wanted people to realize how important this game was for Fredo. I think he's done enough, but he has to keep it up. The Augsburg game wasn't just important for him, but also for his club, facing a direct competitor for the drop.

Also, keep in mind for this game Bodzek was suspended due to yellow card accumulation, and Sobottka reinjured his ankle.

Because it's necessary. If a defender does not look solid enough defensively, one has to say it so there is pressure to keep looking for better defenders. Ligue 1 is a league where defending well is crucial, with all the young, fast wingers and attackers they have to face. You must be disciplined, like our NT defenders have to be when facing fast Caribbean teams, or Panama or Honduras. It's a big flaw when a defender lacks that part of the game, the discipline to keep the line and be back to cover his zone on time.

In the Netherlands it's not like that. Defense there has as main role to start the attack --which makes their games attractive to watch, but often tactically naive. There his role in helping the attack was much more appreciated, because there was time usually for someone else to cover for him. He didn't have that time in France.

I just saw a small clip from Fox Soccer where he (Morales) was singled out as having the best game of all American players in the Bundesliga.

nah - it wasn't that good b/c Suyuntuy said he "disappeared" in the 2nd half.

And he did, until the minute 74. For over 20 minutes he barely touched the ball.

He had a very good first half, which I remarked too.

As for being the "best Yank this week in the Bundesliga," come on, you people are joking, right? Wood was a ghost, Puli played 15 minutes, and that clip must be from before the Schalke-Wolfsburg because it's clear Brooks was the best Yank player this weekend.

#2 is between Fredo and McKennie though.

We are not. It was Fox soccer commentators' opinion. Just like a-holes, everyone has one.

That's not the point. The point is with Johnson, Chandler, Johannsson, Stanko injured, Pulisic only playing a few minutes, Wood not producing, Sargent just starting, Adams not really arrived yet, Klinsmann & Tillman not making the squads, and Haji just finding his feet, it seems a strange honor to concede on someone at this point.

We basically got only three guys playing meaningful minutes in the BuLi.
