The qualifying round for the championship which in turn will serve as the qualifying tournament for 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

    Korea vs Australia

The worst possible group because at this stage East Asian countries play only against other East Asian countries.
Also Cambodia is the host. Fiercely hot weather in March. Cambodia will likely avoid night games to save electricity. AFC morons once again trying to screw East Asian countries....

There is a sizable chance that it is just 2019 without 2020 for Korea;only the top finishers and 4 best 2nd placed teams qualify.
Lee KI may have to be called but I doubt he will come, especially after the same Kim HB rejected him for the Asian Games squad.

I hate when AFC splits East and West... either make a Middle East/West Asia confederation separate from East Asia/Asia or integrate them together... look at Group B... both Australia and we would get out of there with 9 pts...

We should be able to get out of any group with 9 points. U23 AFC tournament we're talking about.

It's 2019 and we still can't field a proper U23 composed of fully professional domestic players? At 23, they should be starting for their K1 sides, not play some university ball.

There are only 6 of them, all of them are 19-20 year olds playing defense. They go to college not for vanity but for practical reasons; if they fail as a soccer player they want to have a second option.

Defenders tend to mature a bit later than MF or forwards and often will need 1-2 years of college football until their talents are identified. Even Park JY or Ko YW went to college and as soon as their college life began they turned pro. This way they can finish college while being Pro.

Not everyone is Lee KI or Son HM.

Do y’all think LKI is going to get fast tracked to the senior team, or will he spend some time with the U23s?

He will most likely participate with the U23 at the Olympic Games.

We'd have a strong midfield/attack (similar to 2012 imo): KCH, PSH, LKI, JWY, UWS, HCH, JSJ, LSH, CYW, etc. We need to find some good WCs besides KCH to strenghen the defense.

Lee SW too if Korea qualify. His team definitely will not release him for AFC U23 Championship/Olympic qualifier though(Jan 2020).
There is also Park JungIn who scored 2 goals on Lunch Box team.
He is very highly regarded by "Korean soccer elders" but a bit too young. He is U19 in 2019. Too young in 2020(U20), too old in 2024(U24).

P.S. Jang Gyulhee one of the Bacca trio is still alive. He may make it if he does well in the K league. There is also the tall guy who signed with a German team, Mr Chon. He was a teammate of Park JI in the U16 team that failed to qualify for the U17 WC.

Yeah Chon or PJI will surely be considered as well (I am tending to the latter). Jang though has small chances imo (other players on his position are better, only 18 players squads, nobone knows how good he is now).. LSW wont participate as he has been exempted already and Verona has no reasons to let him. I hope Kim Jung Min and Kim Jin Ya can participate but both are in the same situation as LSW...

Clubs may not release some players for U20 WC but I think most will because 2019 U20 Championship is held after the European seasons end and in Poland.

However for Olympics, clubs have no choice as Olympics is a FIFA tournament just like WC or Confed Cup.(they can refuse to release only the over-age players) It is the player's choice. LSW in particular is not kind of guy who would decline the invitation to participate in Olympics.

IF Korea can qualify(this is actually very tough now) for the 2020 Olympics Korea probably has the best roster in Korean history. LSW the Japan killer in Tokyo, imagine that.

P.S. Oh Jang is a wing-back now, I heard. No longer a MF. Also the terms of military exemption are such that if you decline the service to represent the country within like 5 years or so I forget, the government can void the exemption. Unlikely but technically possible. In other words clubs can only persuade the players not to go but there are not that many who would risk the hard-earned military exemption that way just for the club.

    No, no and no.

Olympics have nothing to do with FIFA/UEFA and clubs have the rights to refuse a call up. It's the same as the Asian Games where the KFA had to hold individual talks with Tottenham (incl. a deal to call up Son late for the AFC cup), Verona, HSV, etc.

Jang has just recently cleared up that people have wrong informations about his position as he only played a few games as WB and sees himself as a wing forward.

And about the last part, I don't have any clue about that, but it doesn't sound that legit to me..

To conclude: 1. I'm 90% sure that LSW won't be interested in wasting his time at a tournament not that important for him, 2. Verona will hardly let him go and 3. Kim Hak Bum already said that he is aware that he needs to find replacements for most of the AG players who are still eligible for the Olympics.

If I should have said something wrong about the first part I apologize. But as far as I know, clubs have the rights to refuse a player's participation no matter what age. That's why Germany had to go to the last tournament with a B team. Furthermore, KFA is stupid in that regard and will try to exempt most players as possible so they probably won't call up any player that already got exempted (if you look at the past wild card choices, there were only players that still had to do the military service, with the exception of Park Chu Young).

? Didn't PCY not have military exemption prior to AG 2010 and Olympic 2012?

He didn't have an official exemption, but he could postpone his duties to his late 30s by getting a citizenship of Monaco. That led to a huge controversy and fans turned against him. People saw it as a way to fool the government. HMB kind of saved him and PCY repaid the faith with scoring the winning goal against Japan at the Olympics.
I cant understand the problem until now. IMO he did the right choice.

LOL. Park JiSung participated even in the 2002 Asian Games even though he had the exemption already from the 2002 WC. Lee Chonsoo was in the 2004 Olympics even though he had the exemption. Actually both LCS and PJS were in some of the qualifiers for the Olympics in 2004. KFA tried to call up PJS too in 2004 but Hiddink went berserk saying that there was an agreement that Park would be exempt from the Olympics if he released him for a couple of Olympic qualifiers. KFA did not want to strain the relationship with Hiddink and backed down. Later Jung MJ said he should have come down on Hiddink harder for the release of PJS as Korea were very close to a medal that year.

The German case was between the federation and the clubs. If the German federation pushed hard they had the right to have the players but they didn't because they don't regard Olympics that important. Clubs often blackmail the players not to go and they carry it out sometimes in the form of benching the players who did not obey. But as far as legal rights go if the player wants to go he can go. The clubs who openly and formally penalize such a player will 100 percent lose in the court.

There were a few even over-age Latin American players who went to the Olympics against their clubs' wish. Top players...Ronaldinho and a few others, I think.
Their clubs were very upset but did not sue them.

Even if the player sides with the club and not wishes to serve the U23 NT duty, if the federation calls him up and he is U23, the club cannot use him for the duration of the Olympics(you don't see this often because federations usually repect the player's choice). Otherwise big fines and possible further sanctions from FIFA.
These are elementary rules that every soccer fan knows and if you disagree I do not wish to discuss further.
