No longer a Barça lounger: Sergiño Dest at PSV (olf FC Barcelona)

  1. You wouldnot say that if it was to Everton or ManUnited.

Wouldn’t say he looks good or glad he’s out of the way? Eh. I’d dispute either. It’s hard not to say he’s good. And it’s easy to be glad he’s not battling Dest.

serious question: is he better than yedlin right now? of course dest, still a teenager, hasnt progressed to the league level DY has played for years now so it's a tough comparison. say they played roughly equal minutes for our national team against equal opposition, who looks better?

there's no doubt in my mind if dest isn't better than yedlin now, he will be in short time. breaking it down tools wise: dest matches DY's athleticism, already dribbles and crosses better. his field awareness, help and 1v1 defending, long and short passing and all that idk...

yedlin just doesnt impress me much. he makes great recovery plays every now and then, not much more than that. i dont want to see this thread divert to a long solely yedlin discussion, just the vs dest comparison right now and near future. sorry in advance if it becomes that.

He's a much more complete player than Yedlin. He'll have passed him within the next couple of years and definitely before 2022.

hes the new Earnie Stewart (black American dad, White-dutch mom) and born in Netherlands.

And our General Manager is …………..Earnie Stewart.

Now THAT would be really bad if Dest winds up with Netherlands in the end.

Stewart should already have this in the bag.

He was with the U20's 2 months ago, who cares what Earnie is doing? Tab Ramos should be keeping tabs on him.

Yeah, I know people are justifiably worried about keeping dual-nationals after the Gonzalez and Alvarez situations, but I'm not sure how much more the USSF could/should do in this case. Dest was a starter and key player for the U-20s in qualifying once he joined the team and presumably will be a starter and key player in the U-20 WC. How much more needs to be done to signal to a young player that the federation rates him?

Dest also could’ve had a second assist, teammate hit the post

    Well, exactly right.

My confusion comes from why Earnie Stewart is supposed to be the one we should be mad at about keeping in touch with our players. He's a soccer administrator. I'm not sure exactly what his responsibilities are, but they don't say "Chief Scout", or "Chief Outreach Officer". Tab Ramos is an actual coach, Dest is inside his "pool" of players, and has been called into camp with the U20's. I would expect Tab Ramos would be the person checking in with Dest, not Earnie Stewart.

Maybe I don't know the USSF organization quite well enough. But that's how it looks to me. I imagine the USSF has scouts as well, and they'll be watching tape and going to games. They may reach out to kids as well. But Cordiero, Flynn, Garber, and Stewart, the people at the top of the USSF, would not do that.

Dest deserves a March call-up. I've watched all 500 of his minutes he's played for Jong Ajax this season. He is incredible with the ball at his feet. I'm more surprised when he doesn't beat his man than when he does. Jong Ajax doesn't have a lot of defending to do, but from what I've seen his positioning could use some work but his 1v1 defending is pretty good. Don't think he's as good defensively as Yedlin yet but he's not too much worse. His athleticism also pretty much matches or is slightly worse than Yedlin's (other than speed). He's got elite agility, acceleration, and quickness. Also, he's incredibly strong. He was able to hang with Royston Denthre (look him up, the dude is huge) and even bodied him for the ball a few times. As I mentioned earlier, he beats his defender with ease, but my biggest gripe with his game currently is his final product. Too often, he gets himself in a great position, only to fire an errant ball. He's created some assists but he should have far more with the number of crosses he sends. My take on his season so far.

I think his crosses are just fine, rarely an errant ball. Imo the biggest problem is that aerial crosses are not very effective in this Jong ajax team, which is playing a 5ft9 striker.

Also keep in mind that he's not a winger, so you shouldn't expect goals and assists every game or whatever. For a RB he's doing just fine.

Regarding Yedlin vs him, I urge people to keep in mind that Dest is 18 yrs old playing at way way WAY lower level. Let Dest play the u-20 World Cup and then next year maybe he can break into the ajax first team (and be called up).

I think his end product is pretty good, actually. He plays balls that give attackers a chance, and he doesn’t mishit very many at all. I get the feeling he’s capable of delivering a ball where he’s asked to put them far more often than not.

Let me respectfully ask you this: who is a better crosser in the US pool? I’d argue he strikes the ball as well as prime Zusi, and that’s about as good as the US has ever had.

Thanks for all of the videos, btw. Not trying to be argumentative, just not sure I agree on the criticism.

Absolutely insane that anyone would even suggest he’s better than Yedlin today. Totally sane to think he has a higher upside but he’s nowhere close to ready - give him 18 months though and we’ll see...I think Dest is extremely promising.

That's fair, I just think he doesn't connect with teammates often enough on his crosses just yet. I'll have to rewatch some videos to see for sure.

Agree about this exact moment, but more that it isn’t proven, not that it’s impossible that it’s accurate.

I’d get him in first camp after the U20 WC because presumably we’re trying to build for a competition several years away. Also, he’s already good enough to give us minutes as a wide mid or winger while competing head to head with the incumbent. Pretty ideal situation for an early call up, imo.

We definitely don’t want to let things get stale with him waiting for him to claim a starting spot on a top 20-25 club team in the world.

I'd try and get him into the U23 / Olympic stuff after U20. Then it's just a matter of time. The U23's could have Cannon and Dest battling.

Yedlin got his first senior call when he was 20 under JK. I think Dest is already a more rounded player than Yedlin. I Dest gets a senior call right after the U20 WC. I think the kid is ready.
