Ha. Played against him in High School. I heard he was going to play for a semi-pro team in Youngstown a couple of years back, but the team never got off the ground.
This pretty cool! I am assuming the new FO will get something going on donations. Even the Hunts had programs for many years.
DC United picked him up after he got tossed from college. Stuck for a couple years based mostly on that speed. Kid had some insane wheels.
I can't believe it's the same effort, but a bunch of us in Akron got a semi-open invite to try out. This was when I was 37 or 38. Needless to say, I think they had a hard time getting anyone, and that includes my "club's" Y-town contingent which is up to maybe ten now?
I believe this was the Youngstown Nighthawks. They were going to have an indoor team that played at the Covelli Centre.
Resisting the urge to create an old man “Best player I ever played against” thread.. As if I needed another reason to feel old af.
Even bigger, the Browns DO this. My family has 4 Browns season tickets (and has for 50 years) and any games we can’t sell or go to get donated to the Cleveland Browns Foundation and given to the Boys and Girls Club to use!
Toss up between Denzel Antonio and Mike Sweeney (my old-old timer picks) and any of about 3 UA grads including one of Ken Lolla's last 1st team All-Americans (new-school picks).
While playing with future German NT assistant (and almost Crew LEGEND) Nick Theslof, I lost the ball to and was tackled by future MLS coach (and Crew LEGEND) Chris Leitch. Central Ohio had a lot of talent, however I was not a part of that circle. I realized that I could make more money with my mind than trying to blow by defenders.
I'm generally of the opinion that there's talent to be had in the draft and that good teams find that talent. Are you going to find a Mathis or a Dempsey or a Marshall in the draft, like you did in Ye Olden Days of MLS? No, but there are players to be had there. FCD under Pareja was averaging one or two players a year and would have multiple former draftees on the field in matches. (Matt Hedges was almost always one, but Tesho Akindele, Walker Zimmerman, Ryan Hollingshead, and Jacori Hayes also made regular appearances.) And even if a drafted player isn't good enough for the first team, they are almost certainly good enough to help build reserve teams in the USL, alongside academy products/ I just don't see the point in what Tanner is doing. The combine and SuperDraft are one more low-cost avenue for finding prospects. If most of them don't work out, what has it actually cost you? You can still find players that can contribute on an ongoing basis. Or you can do what he's done and ship all your picks for a few GarberBucks that'll only last you the season. And let's face, it's not like we're talking about Barcelona here. I find it hard to believe that there aren't any players in the SuperDraft that can't make the Union's roster.
My brain is fried from doing 4 straight days of interviews for a leadership program at work. So my brain swapped a different word for kicker. Now I have a vision of queso man baby bent over the board of governor's table. Thanks man. Thanks a billion.
Happy to see Porter say he is going to leave building the team to Bez. Appreciate he knows his lane and isn’t trying to do two jobs. Also, sounds like we will be bringing in a TD or something similar to assist in the player side.
We’ve had numerous guys make pretty significant contributions to the team that were draft picks. Meram and Finlay were both draft picks. Tchani was a draft pick though not drafted by us. Josh Williams wasn’t even selected in his draft and look what he’s done. You can definitely find some value in it. The guys I’ve listed above, and many others, provide more value than many much more expensive foreign signings. Obviously the MLS draft isn’t as talent-rich as other sports, but it’s not a barren wasteland either.
The team shop is doing Buy 1 Get 1 free on the primary kit...if that doesn’t scream new kit on the way I don’t know what else would
If I were you, I would wait til the new jerseys come out. The first jersey after The Occupation. Plus, the last time I went to the online shop, there weren't very many size options left for the current kits. Good God, I hadn't thought of that. I wonder what Fat Tony and Andy two-buttons decided on...
