Celtic has had six 10-goal scorers in each of the last two seasons, and they're on track for that again this season. Any forward getting anything resembling decent playing time with them should be coasting to double digits.

The quality of the league is what it is. Not going to debate that. But you don’t “coast”
to double digits in the SPL especially with the Old Firm clubs. Yes, eventually the quality of the players wins out but you have to contend with snoggy pitches, sometimes brute physicality, 10 players behind the ball, and pressure of perfection from supporters. It ain’t a walk in the park. It’s just not. Quality wins out like I said but you earn those double digits. In a full season I’d expect Weah to get double digits but I highly doubt he does that in a half season.

True enough. At the end of the day, you're playing against full-time professionals, however limited they are. Their livelihoods are on the line and they will make you work for yours.

On top of that, these minor clubs have one advantage against Celtic: if they lose 2-0 nobody is surprised and if they get a draw they're heroes, but Celtic win 3-0 and it's why wasn't it 5-0. You learn to deal with pressure of expectations and living in a goldfish bowl that comes with playing for the Old Firm.

As for hitting double digits this season, if he joins on Jan 2nd and is made an if-he's-fit-he-goes-90' starter immediately, he'll get 15 league and 5 Cup games, tops. Double digits means a goal every other game, for a teenager in his debut season. If that happens, he won't be at Celtic for very long.

So he should get 5 goals then, since he's joining halfway through the year if he's fairly good?

Sorry but in Europe Georges was an idol, so basically all the fan comments and all the write-ups about Timothy Weah mention his dad. Not my fault, I'm just the guy posting the links and translations when required.

Anyone who's lived a time in Europe knows how important is pedigree to them.

    https://www.heraldscotland.com/spor...to-overshadow-his-dad-like-ryan-christie-did/

Brendan Rodgers: Timothy Weah loved Lennoxtown guided tour .. I want him to overshadow his dad like Ryan Christie did!

“We have good relations with PSG, so he came over and he had a great day here,” said Rodgers. “He sent me a lovely message afterwards thanking everyone and saying that he enjoyed it, so we shall see. They clearly want him to go on loan to get experience, and he is a good kid, a great boy with sensible head. There are lots of selling factors for him to come here. The club, the supporters, the intensity, the pressure, the style of football and people that he knows. He’s an international player who can play in a couple of positions at the top of the field, so if it comes off, it can be a great signing for us. We’ll just see how that develops.”

Rodgers even joked that he can follow Ryan Christie in overshadowing his father Charlie. “I said to him: our job with you is to make him [George] Timothy Weah’s dad!”

Depends on minutes. Griffiths is averaging 1 goal per 171 minutes, Edouard 1 every 154. I think Weah should be around that level. Divide the number of minutes you think he'll get by 170, 180, and that's a good place to set expectations.

I didn't follow football back then, but was George Weah a huge star or was he just a big star or was he shocking to some circles because there wasn't an African star prior to him?

He was a pretty big star, and there were a few African standouts in Europe before him/around the same time (Milla, fofana and Yeboah comes to mind as well-regarded African players of the same general time-frame - though Milla is for sure the oldest of the crew,I'm not sure which of Weah or Yeboah was more known earlier.) Most of the top African players in Europe were in France or Portugal in the 80-90s iirc. Yeboah is the first in the Bund I can think of off hand - and I was living in German and France on and off in the 80s. But my memory is crap, truth be told. (There must also have been African-born Europe players with Euro citizenship, but I can't think of any from back in the 80's off hand - I could name a few Surinamian Dutch players! Lol)

    So, 7-8 looks like.

I'm trying to get the realistic expectations set here.

My favorite player of that era. I once saw him "dribble" 30-40 yds in the offensive half while running full speed between players and keeping the ball up around his chest, playing the ball with chest and thighs. Awesome!

Ya, tough lack for Celtic fans who say "if he is just half as good as his dad". Sorry, he isn't, we don't have anyone "half as good", neither does Celtic though.

I once saw Pele (of Santos then) live, "dribbling" 10 yards in the penalty area, playing the ball with his chest, thigh and head, beating 3-4 defenders and eventually scoring on Newcastle United in a friendly.

Um... so "scoring goals in Scotland shouldn't be tense, unless you're at Hearts under Cathro?!" Ok...

(Although, BMJ was not setting Edinburgh on fire pre-Cathro either. 6 in 37 or whatever he had has to be among his lowest pro numbers.)

My advisor in grad school had probably published a half-dozen books at the time, and he would joke that whenever he got his annual royalty check, he would use it to treat his wife to a fancy dinner at Red Lobster. He was probably being overly modest, but not by much.

Anyhow, to make this on topic, I felt like Rodgers' comments made it seem like he was really trying to sell Weah on Celtic. To me that implies that Weah has other reasonably enticing options, and Celtic isn't a done deal.

If he's on loan at Celtic, I imagine he's proabbly the highest earner. Wasn't he on like 750-1 million euros at PSG?

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.th...celtics-double-weekly-wage-rangers-study/amp/

I’ve seen various write-ups over the last few years taking an educated stab at Celtic’s wage bill. They have all been pretty consistent in saying that approximately £735K ($923K) is the average annual salary per player. It’s far greater than anyone else in the SPL even Rangers. So If Weah’s wages are indeed in the range you mentioned, he’d fall into that average. So very affordable.

And if he's on loan, Celtic will - probably - be paying the standard 50% of his wages. So, even more affordable. The "probably" comes from whether or not a loan fee is paid; those cases tend to be organized on a case-by-case basis.
