The official slogan of Rubio Rubin's career since the start of the 2015-16 season.

Welcome to Liga MX, home of contracts of ambiguous lengths, mysterious loan status, and the pacto de caballeros.

It’s pretty simple actually. Dorados does Xolos laundry in return for weed. No no wait other way around.

Hopefully it’s not too late for Rubin. I just wonder if he had gotten more first team minutes at a younger age would his situation be completely different.

Sad if there weren’t any suitors in MLS.

Maybe he just needs a bit of nose candy not to be so nervous in front of goal.

Not sure what you mean by more minutes at a younger age. He got a ton of minutes at a very young age.

What ruined his career was the ankle injury he suffered in his second season. It's sad to see but sometimes injuries, even those seeming relatively innocuous, can derail your career in a major way.

"as an 18-year-old in his first professional season for Utrecht in the Netherlands, he even managed to log more than 2,000 minutes—a number few American teenagers reach either in MLS or abroad. These achievements paved the way for three U.S. national team caps, with his first coming in November 2014 in a 2-1 loss to Colombia in London.

While it seemed like the sky was the limit that fall, Rubin hit a wall in his second year. Competition for playing time ramped up at Utrecht and it was made far worse when he suffered a right ankle injury that required surgery and a pin. Sidelined for six months, Rubin struggled for playing time. He logged fewer than 400 minutes his second season.

He was on a very good track at Utrecht till a combo of injury and coach change derailed it. Not sure how much the injury has contributed to inability to regain form/consistency, but he got plenty of 1st team minutes at Utrecht/Jong Utrect. IIRC he had 40-50 games in 3 years in the Netherlands.

His injury knocked him sideways somehow.

Seems like a similar situation is playing out in the Kenny Saief thread right now.

Young player, everything is going great, injury which isn't thought to be career altering at first, and then a slow fade into oblivion.

I haven't paid enough attention, but I wonder if there's any pattern to those that return well from those kind of injuries and those that don't. Rubio has tried a lot of place to restart the career and just hasn't gotten on the same footing he had before. I think he's also hurt by being a tweener - built like a CF, but really better in a SS/AM/Withdrawn role. He hasn't really developed the kind of hold-up skills that would allow him to play the CF role he's built for - and he's just not an instinctual poacher either.

Surprising though, because while he was never "the next big thing" in Utrecht, he was certainly holding his own with very respectable players. His path suggested more than Mex D2, for sure.

It feels like nowadays, the advancements in sports medicine and medicine in general that we just assume that young guys will recover from injuries and have everything they had before in regards to athleticism and ability and all of that but it certainly seems as if this ankle injury pretty much "did in" Rubio's career.

I am for sure surprised at how much it seems to have knocked him off his trajectory. Also wonder how much is mental. I've not seen him much since Utrecht. I wonder if his game is much affected - or if he's just not gotten into the right situation.

And both Uribe and Arce are on-loan from Xolos... actually, Dorados currently has 9 Xolos players on loan according to Transfermarkt, and Rubin would make it an even 10.

That's 10 out of 24 players. If they're the unofficial version of a BL1 II team maybe it's not the end of the road for him at the Xolos.

I'd suggest asking some of the posters in the Mexico forums for their perspective, but . . . well . . . it's the Mexico forums. 'Nuff said.

It’s a miracle straight from Jesus that he’s still alive in 2019 with all that he’s done to his body. He probably did coke the whole offseason.
