Green has been rotated all over the attack by Fürth trying to find him a position where he doesn't suck: left wing, right wing, striker, second striker, CAM, and now SAM on the left. It's useless, he remains Kicker's worst 2.Bundesliga player.
But watching the game and the one against BVB as well he can make some very good runs into the final third when he sees an opening. He is a highly intelligent player, and technically as good as we have save CP. We need more players like him on the pitch and less like Trapp and Zardes and the cast of characters called into the upcoming camp.
Snubs: Zusi - Best RB in the MLS pool? Feilhaber - He's old in the tooth, but could still help us in qualifying. Nguyen - Younger and faster version of Benny, he still has a lot to offer. Agudelo - Kid can still ball, I reckon. Rowe - Played great for Nats a few years ago, think he should be in the picture. Bunbury - Had a decent year, give him a shot. 11 goals and 4 assists last year, pretty solid. Villafana - He's still one of our best LB's. Castillo - People say he had a good year, I wouldn't know. Bedoya - Had a good year, per Bobby Warshaw. Only 31. Dwyer - 13 goals is nothing to sneeze at. Fafa Picault - Good year with Philly, still young at 27. Ibarra - Tied for second-most assists among Americans in MLS last year (after Roldan). https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018/12/20/warshaw-my-top-5-list-every-position-mls-2018
Having played for SKC or the Revs seems to be the kiss of death for this Camp Cupcake. Of those you list above, at least half fit that grouping.... Is the New Year still too far away to create a New Year of Conspiracies....?.....
I suppose the idea behind the Villafana snub is simply to give opportunities at a position that remains an issue, though I would agree that Villafana remains one of our best. Dwyer particularly strikes me as the sort of guy you want on the side when playing in one of those contentious CONCACAF away matches.
Trapp isn't technical? Why do some of you treat all the mid 20's MLS'ers as if they are the same exact player?
A few of these guys I'd leave off the rosters for WCQ, but I wouldn't fault including any of them for the lead up to the GC. Nguyen is an actual 10, for instance. Zusi is the best RB in the MLS pool....
Trapp is technical but he’s not physical nor athletic. That’s what separates him from a good MLS holding midfielder and a top level EPL holding midfielder.
It's how you define 'technical.' Many players, given space and time, can be seen as technical. In the Prem there is rarely either. Regardless of his athleticism, I do not think he plays quickly enough to be called technical.
Either shows how much we're hurting for creative mids, especially for this camp, or Gregg sees Lewis as a diamond in the rough. Probably a combo platter. I generally don't like caps off small samples and flyers. Tend to lead to a lot of waste. In retrospect, how bad does it look we burned several on Rubin or even a lone one on an elective retiree a couple years later in Brandon Vincent. That said, I've long been intrigued by Lewis. and thought he's been one of the most screwed over domestics in recent years, not being deployed by Manchester City US even after prior success. And maybe a call-up helps extricate him from the situation. Would have much rather seen Jonathan Amon and Chris Mueller at this point though.
Chris Mueller for me would’ve been a better call imo. Amon probably would’ve been there if available. I agree overall about your assessment of Lewis though
Or...………………………..it has to do with building up the player pool for U23 Olympic qualifying in 2019. Is he the 7h player at this camp eligible for that team? Cannon, Glad, Trusty, McKenzie, Mihailovic, Ebobisse, and now Lewis. We've called up 21 players eligible for the Olympics over the last calendar year to the full national team. Calling up Lewis (who is a dual national by the way) is a continuation of what we've seen over the past year. Youth. Some will rise. Some will fall.
We have no U23 coach...……………………….. We are having a joint U20 and U17 camp in January at Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
If that were the case you'd think he'd mention it. https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...er-jan-camp-roster-conference-call-transcript On whether the number of new players in camp is because of the upcoming Gold Cup and World Cup Qualifying tournaments, or whether it’s to see as many new players as possible: GB: “I think when you’re looking at the evolution of this pool, I think there were some guys that didn’t get included just based on their age that I think that perhaps if you were picking the strongest group you could have made a case for. That wasn’t our intention. Our intention was to include some veterans, but then other guys we consider core players, and then finally developmental players. We know this is going to be a learning experience for the group, but we think that they’ve done enough throughout the season in Major League Soccer to make the case for getting an opportunity.”
Who knows the reason Lewis was selected. Seems like his heart might have been set on Amon. And when Amon wasn't available, he went with another young Amon-like player. This roster can in fact use speed options on the wing. In general I give a USMNT coach license to call up whomever he wants to January camp. Its one of the times throughout a cycle that he can just call up anybody.
From Jonathan Lewis' wiki page He is a member of the United States under-20 national team,[15] and has been invited to a training camp run by the Jamaican senior team.[11] Lewis has a better chance of playing in a World Cup if he opts for Jamaica. He should switch. I hate to see guys like Johansson go for USA when they have a much better chance qualifying with their alternate citizenship.
And being a good minion you believe everything Kicker says. Your animosity towards Green is pathological.
But did he say who he would reveal the names to? Hopefully a plan is being prepared for the U23's. The talent is quite high if they can get most players released and a lot have played for the full team so it may not be as big a setback as usual to be behind. If the U20's dismantling of CONCACAF is relatable to the U23's the US is in good shape.
I've never been a fan of Fabian Johnson's play with the national team but, to be fair to him, he's not in his mid-30s. He's 31.
