I go off of SoccerHunter's rankings. I don't even have a subscription to TDS.
Your complaint about the U.S. youth system, which are partially justified, is a problem that's far wider and broader than any 1 college program. It is what it is, and it's not going to be fixed any time soon. I just going to let it sort itself out. Also, although I understand why the college rules allow so many substitutions with short turnaround matches being played (i.e., 2 days apart), I think they hamper the style the coaches and kids play. This is perhaps the single most important rule that needs fixing.
I do believe that bringing in more international talent will help our girls. That is, internationals who can pass, play with the ball at their feet, and play in tight spaces.

Berkely has gotten call ups to various camps, etc. She started getting call ups at 15. The last NT activity I can determine is when she played with the 23s vs the Orlando Pride in April of 2017. (match report: https://www.ussoccer.com/matches/u23-wnt/2017/20170407-u23wnt-v-orl#tab-1) From then until now there have been injuries that have limited Berkely.

Thanks for the info. Not sure why she didn't get called up this time.

Looking at the regular seasons (including conference tournaments) but without reference to the NCAA Tournament, over the last eight years, here are the best teams in order. The order is based on average Massey rankings that I consider to be the best, but also include my 5 Iteration ARPI rankings (second best), and the NCAA's ARPI rankings (third best). The numbers also include, for each rank, the team's standard deviation over the last eight years. That is a measure of the team's consistency -- the lower the number, the more consistent the team. (I limited my list to teams that had an average Massey rank of 35 or better.)

Wow, USC at # 16 seems too low.

all comes down to what you value. Ive debated this with people here before. this algo clearly values consistent performance. Many hear give a lot of weight to recent events.

Agreed. Also the emphasis people here (and ADs) put on postseason success. Would be interesting to see how this list changes if you take postseason results into account. For instance, in my mind there is no way UVA and FSU are on equal footing.

Most people here dont value what UVA have done. Their consistency is dismissed by many because they have not won it all. Been around the game a long time and what tends to happen is people look at the 4 year window and judge.

I try and look at players before and after College to gauge the impact. Latsko is a good example . The 4 years she had at UVA have helped her be a much better pro and player than people realized.

Could UVA potentially go further in any given year with a different type of more dynamic athletic player? perhaps. But I respect the way that program remains relevant and seems to develop some pretty unique American players.

I can see why and respect people look at it differently

You don’t have one team that you call your team?

Right or wrong, people have the perception that you are a university of Virginia fan. That’s not a criticism, just an observation. UVA and Swanson are excellent.
For years they were the hardest team in the ACC for FSU to beat.

And I'm not saying UVA is miles apart from FSU. It's just that in these "consistency" rankings they appear to be equal, and I would argue that FSU has cemented itself at the level of a UNC, UCLA, Stanford, even maybe Penn State in a way that UVA has not. They play great soccer, are well coached and extremely successful. I just think at a certain point you can't completely ignore postseason success. TAMU would be another program in this bucket (though I think UVA is at least a step or two above TAMU). Again, would be interesting to see what the rankings look like when postseason is factored in.

Don't underestimate SS connections to US Soccer to get his kids more opportunities than others and to have access to more YNT recruits than others.

With that, the question is does UVa underachieve more than anyone? Probably. UVa recruits hardly any no-name, talented kids and develops them into NT and pro players.

I'd argue Cal underachieves more than anyone.

its an algo. you design an algo and then look at the results. you dont tweak it to get the results that you desire.

you say postseason success? i think you need to rephrase it. call it College Cup appearances.

Show me a top 10 program who recruit no name talent. Ill wait for that as well.
I sense major fandom here. I did not take it as criticism. The suggestion that popcorn was required implied some emotional response. You are not going to change my opinion. I value things differently to most here. Im fine with that . The margins between winning and losing any game are small. I think if you went to any of the a group of coaches like Krikorian, Church, Cromwell, McAlpine whomever you choose, NONE would call what Swanson does underachieving.

it all comes down to what you define as your goals and success. Fans will always be fans

LOL its not tweaking to get what I want. It's adding important missing information to get a more complete picture.

Also pretty sure postseason success includes college cup appearances.

i think you miss the point. the OP built an algo and we are discussing its results. you are quite welcome to ask them to include post season. Im saying you dont tweak the results of his experiment. you run another data set thru it and then see what it spits out.

I said College Cup success because I think making the sweet sixteen in 14 consecutive years is post season success.

I am an unabashed and major FSU fan. I try very hard to be objective in my comments and analyses, but recognize that my inherit bias sometimes colors my opinion.

Do you have one program you cheer for above all others?

For instance, I was very disappointed that top drawer soccer had Natalia Kuikka ranked below the top 50. They also had Jaelin Howell ranked below the top 25 among freshmen. The post season rankings put Kuikka in the top 25. They put Zhao and Howell in the top five among freshman. Being a zealous FSU fan, I was still disappointed that Berkeley was too far down and Carle did not get ranked, but that is a reflection of my fandom I suspect
I’m at least an objective enough to recognize the outstanding talent that people like Macario and Bunnie Shaw have and Emily Fox.

thats great. full disclosure Im not much of a fan outside of the professional team i have rooted for since i was very young. I appreciate teams who try to play progressive and exciting soccer. i dont understand when "fans' of other teams in other threads discourage anything but rabid fandom.

At least for me, you are always welcome in the FSU thread. We may not always agree, but that’s OK!

Tom you have always seemed like a great poster to me. A big fan and welcoming and fair to others also. You certainly claim your bias, but is it bias if you are correct also when you say players are rated too low for example? Seems just like a great and knowledgable fan!
