Florida State, who finished in 7th place in the ACC (including a loss to the 12th place team), is now playing for a National Championship. Of course nobody actually thinks they are the 7th best team in the conference, but that's where they ended up. The 8th, 9.5 and 11th place teams all made the Sweet Sixteen as well. The ACC is a strong conference, from the top right through the middle. Syracuse and Pitt are the only real weak links (right now). Thanks for playing devad.

Whoa Sam Coffey transferring from Boston College. Not known yet to where to. ACC Midfielder of the Year, First Team All American, and BC’s only All ACC selection. Big loss.

Does our conference have any rules forbidding transfers within the conference?

Meh: Miami beat Florida State. Does that mean Miami is good? Not hardly--Miami is another weak link. The bottom half of the ACC isn't all that. Florida State seriously underachieved during the regular season--that's the key point.

The point is so much of this is when you lose. No more no less.

If you transfer within conference you lose a year of eligibility I believe.

It doesn't mean Miami is "good". Just that on any given day they might be "good enough" to beat the national champion. ie not terrible.

Let me address this "seriously underachieved" comment re: FSU.
As a Nole fan, I was upset at some of those results and was critical at the time.

In one of the post championship interviews I heard Mark basically say most of the losses didn't bother him because we were playing better as a team and he knew the results would come.
MIami and Clemson losses and NCSt tie were all examples of dominating an opponent only to let one shot get by and ruin the result. It was also a case of the team learning to be more precise in the final third.
Chemistry takes time. With all the injuries and various NT callups, this team had very little time to gel and develop that chemistry. It didn't happen fully until the post season.
The Duke game in the ACC tourney was the beginning of that excellence IMO.

I would suggest in hindsight that being behind and having to struggle benefited us in the post season as we got behind USF briefly and USC!
These girls responded with grit, determination, fire, fight and precision.
In contrast Stanford had faced very little adversity during their season, and I don't think they responded well to us taking the lead on them.
UNC in the natty game responded very well. They just couldn't get the equalizer.

I'll stick with Mark on this one.

its easy to craft a narrative that fits the season at the end. None of it matters. FSU won. all teh best team, ratings stuff is meaningless to me. Its all about when you win and when you lose. The NCAA season revolves around KO competitions. for me there are 3 titles. ACC reg season, ACC tournament and NCAA.

If you ask me, if the schedule was balanced , the ACC reg season would be by far the hardest to win. Would not be the most prestigious though. As its unbalanced, its moot.

Hindsight offers a perspective that is absent in the middle of the fray!

Let me also say that a little good fortune goes a long way.
USC could have won that PK kick off. My mind wonders what would have happened had they?
They were capable of beating PSU, Stanford and UNC, but would they have?
USC and UNC were our toughest games to be sure.

Judgments made during the season are often emotionally charged and lacking in perspective.
Post season judgments are indeed much easier and more accurate I believe.

When you lose and when you win or peak is key.
Compare our 1st vs 2nd games versus UVA and UNC.
We won the first game against UVA, but they were at least as good as us that time, just didn't finish. That appeared to be a problem with UVA this year, finishing in the final 3rd.
The 2nd game against UVA, we dominated.
Similarly with UNC, they totally whipped us in Tally and we dominated them in ACCCG.
Kudos to them for making the Natty game pretty darned even.

Mark has been tremendous over his career at FSU in peaking the team at tourney time.

That is my point exactly. go look at the second game vs UVA again. Look at the second goal. the goal that changes the balance of the game. Interestingly i think i posted it here after the game. No one commented. As clear a foul as you will ever see. who knows if FSU convert the upper hand into more goals ? its not about whether games were even or not in soccer. its about who wins. Its a game where the better team loses often. Its part of its beauty

FSU won. They had a great season. They deserve ALL the kudos. But its easy to create a story that fits what already happened.

    also ..

    http://www.theacc.com/stats.aspx?path=wsoc&year=2018

Duke and UVAs problems are they are not physical enough. UVA score plenty. to win in College, you have to be able to foul intelligently and be physical enough to withstand direct soccer. UVA and Duke were not.

the YC/RC numbers are ridiculously low. Says a lot about how the game is referreed

Umm, no, I've seen much clearer fouls before.
Edit: BigSoccer seems to have cleared out the time aspect of the link. Jump to the 51 s mark.

Does the "its easy to create a story that fits what already happened" line apply here too?

Well, now that you mention it, yeah, I can see it being a foul on the GK. If you're asking if the GK was fouled, no. No one in this thread thought it was the last time you brought it up. I am sure the few still reading don't believe so now.

Was this a big point of discussion somewhere about how egregious of a mistake it was by the referee? It certainly doesn't appear to me to be as cut and dry as you believe.

hey its all opinions. just asking. it takes a lot to win games.luck, decisions play a part. You have to be able to take advantage of every break you get. perhaps i look at it a little differently.

    I'm quite frankly not sure.
I watched it over several times. The problem is the camera
was focusing on the crosser and by the time it
zeros in on the goal area, the GKer is at our player's feet (Dorosy) and she
is beginning to fall like a tree cut down in the forest.

The announcers did not even bring it up as an issue.
My take after watching it several times is that when the cross is struck by Carle towards Dallas, the GKer comes out aggressively initiating contact with our player. She contacts DD low around shin/ankle area causing her to fall on top of the prone GKer. Meanwhile, DC takes the carom and calmly deposits it into the goal.

I have not seen a replay (don't think it exists) that shows the sequence from the beginning of GKer and DD.
We can only extrapolate by what we see and what others comment on.
Not scientific, but the best I can do.

Was Dorosy not pushed from behind into the gk?

Is there an article or twitter post stating this? Anyone know why she’s transferring? And is her landing at Gtown a for sure?

she's listed in the NCAA transfer portal. Which is the new way kids transfer. You tell your compliance office that you are transferring and they list you in the portal for all the coaches to see. I haven't seen anywhere it confirmed that Georgetown is the for sure destination.

Someone also said PSU and Duke. If Duke (or elsewhere in conference), I'm assuming the ACC will give her a waiver for losing a season of eligibility since the coach is leaving? Is that a thing?

No she would have to sit and lose a year in the ACC. Doesn't matter that the coach left
