Any US TV news about the Copa Lib 2nd leg or the Club World Cup? I have not heard anything. Seem to remember watching it in Spanish last year.
Copa Lib 2nd leg - FOX Deportes has the rights, but I can't blame them for dragging their feet on opening a TV slot for the game. Assuming both teams show up to the Bernabéu you can probably watch it there. Club World Cup - Telemundo had the rights last year. And if they still do, no way in hell they pass up games featuring arguably the most popular club side in North America, especially given the potential of a semifinal with Real Madrid.
https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/nbc-sports-networks-thread.2023455/page-52 says NBC Sports bought the Copa Libertadores second leg rights to show it in English on Telemundo. NBC Sports Network has rugby at that time. I'm guessing it will be the first time a Champions League game from a confederation other than UEFA was on English broadcast TV in the USA. Concacaf Champions League games have been on Spanish broadcast TV.
Here come the updates! Copa Libertadores: As @EvanJ shared, the Final 2nd-leg will be shown on FOX Deportes and on Telemundo. What I don't know for certain is if the Telemundo broadcast will actually be in English (e.g. some staff member whispering to Andrés Cantor, "Oye Andrés, say something in English para que no nos multen" ) or if they'll just do it in Spanish as well like they did for Peru-New Zealand. Club World Cup: Telemundo and NBC Universo got us covered. For the first week, Chivas's match will be on Telemundo, and NBC Universo will show the opener and Espérance's quarterfinal.
I would think that Telemundo only had the rights to show it in English. Fox Deportes had a contract for the whole tournament, and I would assume the contract stated that CONMEBOL couldn't let another channel in the USA show it in Spanish also. There are events like the State of the Union Address that are shown on a bunch of channels, but sports normally aren't. Even if the NFL could make more money by letting the Super Bowl be on ten channels at the same time, they wouldn't try that. There are people who would watch the game on one channel and DVR the other channels to watch the commercials from those channels later.
Honest question: then how did Telemundo/NBC Universo get to show Peru-New Zealand in Spanish as well when beIn Sports had rights to the Conmebol WCQ? Unless that didn't include the intercontinental playoff...in which case, did FIFA simply sell the Spanish-language rights to two US networks?
I don't know. It would be good to know if TV rights for the playoffs are sold by FIFA or by the host confederation. bselig posted that Telemundo will show the game in Spanish. I wonder how many soccer games have been on national TV in the USA on different channels with different broadcasters in the same language. Obviously many games are on a regional sports network for each team.
The commentators just said, "And River will now play in Dubai" ..... I don't think he knows what he just did there, Garfield never sent Odie to Dubai....
Congrats to River on their fourth Copa Libertadores. Independiente also with a sigh of relief given their record is safe.
I wish, that would save me some driving - especially on a workday. @Paul Calixte - Can we close this thread? Time to take the discussion to the tournament thread.
Don't they just keep the same thread for the tournament itself? Either way is OK with me. Starts Dec 12. Though I will probably wait till the quarterfinal round on December 15.
