Quite expected results: Division 1 teams won over Division 2 teams (Seagulls will play-off for Div.1, but at the moment they're still a Div.2 team) and the teams from Division 1 who ended in the relegation zone at the end of this season lost to other Division 1 teams.
No revenge whatsoever for Cerezo.

    Scorers:
    Albi 3-1 Nittaidai
(17' Mei Yasaka, 70' Yuria Obara, 76' Moeno Sakaguchi - 54' Shoko Uemura)
    Cerezo 0-2 Mynavi
(25' Hitomi Ono, 90' Mana Mihashi)
    Nippatsu 0-2 Urawa
(35' Yuika Sugasawa, 78' Chinatsu Kira)
    Shizuoka 0-2 Inac
(8' Mana Iwabuchi, 53' Megumi Takase)

The current top-scorers of Empress' Cup 2018 are Yuika Sugasawa and Yuka Momiki with 4 goals each. :coffee:

    My 5:

Mizuho Sakaguchi 1-0 vs Australia (AFC Cup)
Not only well crafted but also most important goal (imho) in 1st half of the season. Without it -> it's nervous 5th place game against Philipines for last WWC ticket and probably place outside FIFA top 10 today (no points for China SF and Australia F in such scenario)
Yuika Sugasawa 1-0 vs. China (Asian Games)
Most important goal (imho) in 2nd half of the season...and what a goal at that: Cup winning diving header scored in harsh weather in last minute of the final match against rivlas that perhaps were better on that day.
Mina Tanaka 1-1 vs. USA (ToN)
Well crafted goal scored as immidiate response and against world no.1 team - positive&driven yet calm finish by Tanaka.
Rika Masuya 1-2 vs. Brazil (ToN)
Powerful diving header. Great vision and skill.
Yuka Momiki 4-0 vs. Norway (Friendly)
    Outstanding indviual effort.

    Standings so far...(#4357)

    (blissett, KAPIJXM, Lechus7)

5 points Mana Iwabuchi vs China (AFC Cup) 0-1
5 points Yuika Sugasawa vs China (Asian Games) 1-0
4 points Yui Hasegawa vs Korea DPR (Asian Games) 2-0
3 points Mina Tanaka vs USA (ToN) 1-1
3 points Aya Sameshima vs Ghana (Friendly) 7-1
2 points Rika Masuya vs Brazil (ToN) 1-2
1 point Yuka Momiki vs Norway (Friendly) 4-0

*(it's 7 points as well for Moeno Sakaguchi goal vs. USA at ToN - from Manchester Nadeshiko - I'll wait though in case he would decide to add 4 more goals)

My top five are selections based on nothing other than they are the five that I am probably going to watch over again more than the others... i.e. no context (match winning goals..match saving goals..etc etc)... I just like watching these goals more than the others... they make my arms go up in the air.Very unscientific I know
    1...Moeno Sakaguchi (TON)
    2...Kumi Yokoyama (AFC Cup)
    3...Mana Iwabuchi (Algarve Cup)
    4...Yuka Momiki (Friendly)
    5...Rika Masuya (TON)

ps Thanks Lechus for the Goals of the Year vid

The name of referees for WWC 2019 are out: Japan has one referee and 3 assistants, including the trio who recently directed the Spain-New Zealand semifinal at U-20 WWC (and did quite well, although some say that they missed a PK for Spain early in 1st half):

For records, we could still cross roads with Bibiana Steinhaus, who's been selected again. :coffee:

According to leaks coming from the US boards, next year Japan should take part to SheBelieves Cup instead of Tournament of Nations.

The tournament should be placed towards the end of February/beginning of March 2019 and, apart from host USA and Japan, it should include England (traditional SheBelieves Cup contender) and Brazil (traditional Torunament of Nations contender).
I assume ToN won't happen instead because of WWC. :coffee:

Well, I can't help admiring Yuki for her will to learn different languages and to dive into them no matter what: when she was playing in Germany she was keeping a blog in German; and now she dares to write a long text in English and, although some parts of it sound quite cryptic in a Google-translator-like-way :giggle:, some other parts come across quite clearly.

Apparently she acknowledges that the doubts many of us had about her "retirement" from National Team were legitimate and that, despite what others thought, the full-story hadn't been told yet.

What I get is that Yuki told Takakura "I want to play only for a club team for now": the part I put in bold seems to confirm that there was no intention of retiring for good.
She says that back then her motivation was low and a lot of doubts about her career were crossing her mind. And she wasn't satisfied with her day-to-day routine in club either.

But. She says that now, in Chicago, she found again the feeling of enjoying "what she wants to do in her life", that her state of mind is now good and her motivations are high.

Does this imply that she's now ready for a call from Takakura? :coffee: She actually doesn't mention anything about that openly, after her (very revealing) opening sentence: "I think I need to tell people who haven't know why I've been not on national team for last two years". But if she basically writes: 1) I want to tell you why I wasn't playing in NT; 2) I had asked to temporarily withdraw because I wasn't enjoying my life in soccer anymore; 3) now I turned to: "I love to play soccer... I LOVE MY LIFE!"; would it be a so risky syllogism to deduce: 4) I am now ready to get back playing in NT?

Or why would she feel the need to write down this piece, in English (so that any fan around the word can read, not only Japanese people), with this particular timing (the same week of WWC draw) and mentioning since the beginning her relationship with National Team?

Of course, one of the reason why she isn't more open than that about her intentions, in my opinion, is that it wouldn't be very "Japanese" (in the sense of being very respectful of others, and of hierachies in particular) to boldly say: "Hey, you know what? I am back and I'd really like to have my place back in the roster at WWC". Of course, she wants to make clear that it's totally up to Takakura if she'll have a future in NT or not.
But I guess her message comes across quite clear anyway, don't you think too, guys? :coffee:

I remind you that this would somehow be consistent with that little conversation I had this summer with journalist Kei Matsubara at U-20 WWC in France before the match vs USA (when Takakura too was on standings): she had said that in her (well-informed) opinion a Nagasato's come back in NT wasn't actually out of the realm of possible. Now I'd say it is even less.

I just realized that Japan at SheBelieves Cup seems to imply no Algarve Cup for us in 2019. Thus no easy chance for me to watch Nadeshiko Japan live, should I want to travel (traveling to USA is a completely different animal than a quick flight to Portugal).

Well, I hope work commitments will leave me enough time to enjoy some WWC match in France next summer. :cautious:

Only 4 days until the World Cup draw.

Looking at the rules it looks like Japan will definitely get one of Italy, Scotland or New Zealand out of pot 3. They can't get Australia in pot 1 but could get anyone in pot 4.

Is Blissett hoping for the Azzurre or not? I think NZ would be the weakest of the three.

In other news The Guardian newspaper are counting down their 100 best Women footballers. They have got to number 40. So far we have had Nagasato at 96, Kawasumi at 89 and Iwabuchi at 62. It seems quite Western biased and so I don't expect to see any more Nadeshiko except Utsugi (maybe) and Kumagai.

Yeah I do follow it and it made me :ROFLMAO: after ie. seeing Endler higher than Iwabuchi or for that matter Oshoala beeing around 90th-ish place all while German new bloods are around top50. Biased indeed.

I definitely hope that Japan doesn't get Italy for at least two reasons: the first is that Italy is anyway my country and I would hate to root against them in a match against Japan (I'd do it anyway, because of course I'd prefer Japan to advance, but I would like to get the chance to root for Italy in their group); the second is that Italy is a team in the raising and, despite South Korea and China (that we anyway couldn't get, since they are from AFC) being technically ahead of them in the rankings, I've got the feeling that it could actually be the strongest team from pot 3, thus the most dangerous one in a group-stage perspective, especially should we get one of the strongest teams from pot 1 (USA or Germany). Having seen Italy play in the last year, I've got the impression that they could be one of the pot 3 teams with the highest chance of advancing to the knock-out stage; yes, they recently lost 5-2 to Germany, but they didn't look as completely outplayed as the score would suggest (they had come back from 0-2 to 2-2 in first half) and I'd say they're very close to playing on a parity level with top 10 teams. There are talents in the team (Bonansea above anyone else) who are able to flourish in a World Cup and who look like the kind of players that we tend of suffer the most (their speed on the wing are their style of play are similar to Australia).

Bottom line: there is a reasonably high chance that we get Italy, but I pray we don't. Scotland (despite Kim Little) and New Zealand (despite the U-17 defeat) are much more beatable, in my eyes, than Italy.

Of course, Japan should aim to the highest final placements in the tournament, so we should plan to beat whatever we get at group stage, but anyway I guess Italy would pose more serious problems than the other potential pot 3 teams.

Considering that Kumagai was shortlisted for Ballon d'Or, I guess she's a given. I would expect Ustugi too. Maybe Yokoyama? She wasn't successfull in Bundesliga, but she won AFC Cup with a spectacular goal. Although, given the bias you were talking about, I don't see her easily in top 40.

Oh, my, @Manchester Nadeshiko. It's a rumour, but it's quite a reliable one, I'd say...

We're going to know more about it through December, I guess, but there's a good chance that you just paid to watch Australia or Canada and not Japan... :speechless:
