That was my feeling too watching the first couple Leipzig games in the Bundesliga. They like great going forward, but seem really soft in the midfield defensively and very prone to getting hit on the counter. It seems like they could use Adams right away, at least as a bench option who can come and try to slow down the other team through midfield after Leipzig has a lead.

On the other hand, Marsch's Euro coaching career isn't off to a great start...

It’s not his fault! Rangnick prepared the drinks wrong.

(If you don’t get it, see the Jesse Marsch thread.)

Out of curiosity, if he joins in January (which it sounds like he will), when would this likely be announced officially?

I'd guess about a week after the New York season ends.

Assuming this will be announced after the season ends or at the start of the winter transfer window, whose his competition for CDM?

In MLS and for the NT he’s played CM, but I don’t see Leipzig playing him there with more creative players like Brandt available.

Diego Demme and Stefan Ilsanker are their primary defensive midfielders.

    Kevin Kampl
is more of a #8, probably the closest thing to Tyler's game.

All 3 of those guys I just named started for them in the midfield this past weekend and are their primary, go-to guys. In terms of what the competition is like behind them, there's not a lot, to be honest. Those are the only 3 pure central midfielders on the roster. Everyone else that they play there off of the bench does so as a secondary position. I think Tyler will come in and immediately be used as a sub.

that play yesterday in the buildup to goal 2...big player making big plays in big games

MLS highlights show the assist but not TA winning possession, holding off multiple physical challenges and then making the 40 yard run to be in position for the assist so I'm not linking

Adams and Mckennie at CM brings that bite we've been lacking since JJ's post 2014 decline. Very exciting.

BILD is reporting that Tyler Adams is definitely on his way to Germany in January to join Leipzig.

The twist is what will happen with the other player Leipzig want to bring in alongside Adams, a 20 year old central midfielder from RB Salzburg, Amadou Haidara. The guy has been absolutely on fire in Austria and he's been reportedly valued at over 20 miilion euros. NYRB and RBL seem to agree on a discounted fee for Adams, but there's questions about if RB Salzburg will take a discounted price for a more "valuable" player (not saying Haidara is better, but his experience and numbers in Europe make him 3x or 4x more valuable on the transfer market).

He would be direct competition for Adams, so I personally hope Hairara ends up somewhere else.

He seems like a RBL type of player--fast, athletic, pressing, with enough technical ability to get by. Aside from (possibly) this Haidara guy, who is his competition?

A guy is "on fire" in Salzburg. He is Adams' competition? What is the level difference between Austria and MLS? Royer was from Salzburg, IIRC. He is good, but not so good that he makes Adams look inept. I think he will do fine in Germany. He is young and willing to work hard. His progress this year is a glimpse into his uptick in quality. Moving to a bigger pool makes a bigger fish.

Adams is the type of player that is immediately valuable to a team. He's got an incredible motor and is extremely versatile. I would be pretty shocked if he doesn't make the bench immediately, with a spot start in the first month.

People forget, but Germany has a massive winter break that makes integrating into the squad midseason much, much easier.

MLS is a better league (by some margin), but that doesn't mean anything about the comparison of these two players, of course.

Royer came from Midtyjlland, though he's Austrian.

only responding to the post that another player is worth more in
Austria, RB Salzburg, and plays the same position, hence the competition for the position. I am sure that MLS and Salzburg are close to the same level, thus Adams, I feel, is in a good position to make noise at RB Lipzig.

The MLS is a much stronger league overall, but Salzburg is a very talented team, they made the Europa League semifinal last year beating Dortmund, Lazio, Real Sociedad, and Marseille(in the group stage).

Right -- RB Salzburg has the highest total market value in Austria at more than 112 million euros, according to Transfermarkt. It's 4 times greater than Rapid Wien at No. 2 and like 17 times more than TSV Hartberg in last.

For big teams, it makes sense to spend as much as possible to get to UCL/Europa League. The prestige factor is incredible. Their wage and transfer budgets are calibrated to European competition, not the domestic league. So of course they destroy their domestic competition and in a good year win a few games in Europe. That affects the rankings because it literally could not matter less what the smaller clubs are doing -- they aren't even being measured.

Excited for Tyler, excited for the national team, dreading the massive hole he's going to leave in New York's midfield next season.
