Guzan maybe pulled out last minute (just speculating) ....if so, a player already in europe would be a good last-minute option, imo.

Who are the other players in Europe that are starting now? Brendan Moore, Kronholm...anyone else?

It appears Klinsmann is actually replacing Zack Steffen for the European friendlies. Likely in large part because he's a Euro-based keeper and the US has nothing in that department except for Ethan Horvath who was already in the squad. They probably didn't think it was worth it for Bill Hamid or Jesse Gonzalez to make an impromptu transatlantic trip to be a third-string camp body. Also, Hamid and Gonzalez and other similar MLS options don't have very compelling cases for a callup anyway.

I didn't know it's because you guys are playing in Europe and just going the lazy route of calling someone there instead of bringing someone from the states, too expensive.:p;)

Kronholm is aging and not good enough for International football. No MLS keepers to call up?

I think it's the Klinsmann family threat working out. Saying he might opt for Germany (yeah right) just to get a senior US call up and next thing you know he's called up.

well they probably already know who they will start - i'm guessing horvath gets at least 1 game -and maybe they want to give guzan the other game too.

so, not much point in flying in "the best" benchwarmer from the US when they can just find a local warm body, imo.

Wait so is Steffen still onboard and training or will he be left at home?

Seems to make sense given we are also calling up other reserves. It might help him get more club attention in securing a loan somewhere.

the real issue isn't the European based it's more reserve GK in 4th division. GK is the hardest position from the XI to get chances and lock down. Very easy for GK to not pan out. Sargent or Weah are different story they can still get real chances in the 1st team.

he needs to renew his contract before being able to get a loan. I don't think it matters what he does for USA, it's how he performs for Hertha II and 1st team training that matter for his club advancements. There is also the chance he won't play for the USA anyways.

Sure I don't disagree, but the MLS guys are either shortly into their off-season or unavailable due to playoffs. He's already in Europe and is integrated into the youth set up so his inclusion makes sense in this unique scenario.

Unlikely to play, called for the experience, what in CONCACAF is called "the process." It only mean he's on the bubble, and like Palpatine with Anakin, he's being watched.

On short notice the camp needed another GK and he is a warm human GK body who lives close by.

That's probably all that should be read into it.

Perfect time to bring in Gonzalez as the no.3

Good on Horvath though. His opportunity to put that Portugal game (officially to rest). Sucks for Steffen. A great performance against England really would have added to his transfer fee.

Yeah, if you look at the list of American GKs in Europe, this makes sense. The staff wants a third GK for training. The third GK is rather unlikely to play, so haul in someone relatively young and relatively local.

He's following in the hallowed footsteps of Dominic Cervi and Cody Cropper.

In his 12 month tenure, Sarachan tends to give the benefit of the doubt to U-23/Olympic eligible players (see Luca de la Torre, Matthew Olosunde).

    I agree with that

Is that mocking Cervi and Crooper or you don't see JK having much of a future (despite being HYPED by some)?

You bring in 3rd GK’s to friendlies players that are good enough to provide quality in training but are ok not getting match minutes. Rimando was the ultimate 3rd GK bt it is good to get youngsters in.

I concur. And Rimando was a solid guy to have on the 2014 WC. But he was called up still into 2016, which is quite shocking to me.

He went to great lengths to sell that one. Kind of impressive.

He's got 6 months left. Played 1 Europa League match a year ago. He's played 19 matches for the reserve side in the time he's been there. What's his next move?
