Didier Drogba is a legend and you haters are losers.

If you are holding onto the Drogba leg lock as a reason for your hate, I have 2 counterpoints.

First, the Drogba leg lock of 2015 was the first moment the Crew approached national soccer relevance since about 2009.

    Second, it was ********in hilarious.

    Drogba is the best.

I lived in Louisville for 5 years while I went to college there. LCFC wasn't formed until after I left, but I'm still proud of their accomplishments. Obviously I will always be all in for the Columbus Crew, but LCFC are my USL team of choice to follow.

I don't see them every making an MLS jump, but they are doing things the correct, organic way. They are now building a stadium. They are steadily building a fan base. Basically everything that Austin has failed to do.

Anyone complaining about level of play in the USL is an idiot. You don't watch lower league soccer and expect to see premier league stuff. Even with Drogba out there.

I'll be in Seattle on Sunday, and was hoping to find a place that would put on the crew game. But after last night's result, I don't feel like I can ask Seattle fans online where they would recommend I go. So looks like turning off all social media and texts and watching the game at night on my DVR service it is.

Pretty much any sports bar will have the game on or willing to flip the channel. They aren't afraid to show soccer at bars out here.

Oh, I have watched and disliked Drogba far before the leg lock. He is just an arrogant POS who thinks he is a God. Diego Costa took his place at Chelsea and I was able to continue to hate them as well.

My biggest beef with the Drogba to America thing was that he came here with the same mindset as Zlatan. Basically thinking this league is well below his quality of play and he will march right in and win the Cup. He became a total bitch as that slipped away. And then chose to drop down a league in America and do the same thing at Phoenix. Last night, he was basically telling the ref how he should have made every call. I swear, he would run from the opposite side of the field on an obvious foul and still bitch. I would have booked him so fast.

I have a bunch of friends in Louisville and get down there pretty regularly. A couple are soccer fans, most aren't. I was pretty shocked the last time I was down there how many were asking about the Crew but also talking about the USL team there. They seemed to have some genuine buzz around it even outside of the more ardent fans.

One set of friends, who are FAR from USL or MLS fans, were well aware of the new stadium and the team's performance over the past year. They admitted they hadn't been to a game but also said they were going to go once the new stadium is open. Sort of wildly they said there was talk of it becoming an MLS team, especially by city leaders but they also pointed out that it seemed sort of far-fetched to them.

I doubt they will have an MLS team in the next 5-10 years, the city is about 1m people smaller than Columbus in the Metro/CSA area but maybe one day. Either way, I agree they are doing things the right way as opposed to how Austin has tried to handle getting a team.

I went there for lunch on Wednesday but my lunch companion has an allergy to shrimp and they fry everything together. So I'll have to go back alone.

I wonder how much of the buzz/excitement is simply due to the city now having a professional sports team that isn't a minor league baseball team. Minor league baseball teams, while truly being professional teams, aren't really viewed as such. Very small cities like Erie PA have minor league baseball teams so it's not really anything special. Additionally, they aren't necessarily "playing to win". They are at the mercy of their major league affiliate.

Louisville City (very original guys) is finally something that isn't Louisville basketball and isn't minor league baseball. It's a true pro team, albeit in the second division, that is not beholden to the demands of a higher-up team.

Regardless of the reason, it's good to see that there is a healthy level of support so far. I'm sure building the stadium will only help that support grow stronger.

Doesn't Louisville have a quality college football program?

And minor league baseball can be beloved, just like minor league soccer. At one time, the Louisville Redbirds were the first minor league team to attract over a million fans in the course of a season.

I think it was in this thread that I said that Epstein and IndyAustin had dueling petitions in Austin. Turns out they are both gathering signatures for the same petition, the one from IndyAustin. Epstein just doesn't want to do it with them because of Pepe.

I think that might be part of it but I think the stadium was really driving the awareness/buzz initially. The complex they are building for it is pretty nice and in a part of town that is redeveloping (from basically nothing) quickly. I think that started the ball rolling and then that the club was actually good and participating in the community and engaging with people really is what made it more than just general excitement over a development project.

Their football team sucks this year. They are 2-7 with their wins coming against Indiana State and Western Kentucky. They were pretty good about 5-6 years ago but have kind of been starting to fall off a bit.

Yes, minor league baseball can be beloved, but in this day and age it's not the type of thing that creates a buzz/excitement around the city. Nobody really cares if the minor league baseball team wins or losses. Heck, most people who go to the game don't even watch the game.

Louisville City is much more different in nature than what they currently have available in their market.

Louisville has a horse race you might have heard of. It's been my understanding from my visits down there (my wife has family in Louisville, and we're there a couple of times a year) that, in addition to the Derby itself, horse racing's a very big deal in that city. In my (limited) experience, remove horse racing and bourbon as Louisville-related conversation topics, and things get pretty thin.

I was down there last summer, on a night of a LouCity match, and was impressed at the number of people I saw wearing club gear. It certainly wasn't an MLS-level buzz, but it was organic, legit and looked to be a fun way to spend an evening.

It's not a pro sports team. My goodness people, how hard is it to comprehend what I'm saying.

I'm not at all trying talk down or diminish the excitement surrounding the team. I'm simply theorizing about the origins of the excitement.

The Rochester Red Wings are a beloved local institution. They are community owned with thousands of minor shareholders (including yours truly). An elected board runs the thing, the Yankees send players, it always makes a small profit and locals have been going out to the ballgame for a million years. Its a tradotpn

It's kind of nice. Buy a beer (Jenny Cream.if you want to be authentic) and some snacks, sit in the stands and do your best James Earl Jones impression.

A good friend of mine whom I clerked with at the federal court in Buffalo is originally from Rochester and a huge Red Wings fan.

Here in San Jose, the A-league Giants (well below Louisville or Rochester in the baseball hierarchy), whose Depression-era public works stadium (more like a county fair grandstand) seats only 3,000, are nevertheless so beloved that when there was movement afoot to relocate the major league A's to San Jose, polling revealed (as I predicted) that large swathes of residents would vote against it in the required referendum if it meant folding the minor league team. Many of us (including me) only go to one or two games per year, but it is such a slice of Americana that most longtime residents will tell you it is among the city's finest attractions.

By the way, I met Bob Feller at a San Jose Giants game before he passed away. He signed autographs and talked to fans at length. It was like visiting with your grandfather.
