It's for those rich people who don't have to rely on the Philco for their daytime baseball fix.

I knew my favorite platypus would appear with my Apple mention.

Eh, sorta. But the guarantee is the Apple TV. It's like they felt they had to produce a really needlessly expensive vestigial organ. One of their poorest executions for such a vanity brand. It's as if Sharper Image came out with a sports car.

Smart TVs haven't gotten to the point where the operating systems are consistent (maybe not the best word...) enough to rely on developer (or maybe developer rely on them) to have useful, we'll maintained apps for all TV providers. That is the role of Apple TV, Roku, PlayStation n, XBOX, Firestick...

I have 2 Apple TVs, and a Firestick somewhere.

    Apple TV in particular.

    I get the use case.

The problem is that major content providers are continually changing THEIR streaming methods and other key bits on purpose, the updates of which they, of course, grant their closed-source brethren right away, but only as they feel like it.

That's why Amazon's product will always be best for streaming Prime content, etc. But Apple TV seems a particularly poorly executed paperweight that ended up having to play catch-up to the likes of Roku, XBox, and Amazon - whether that's technically still true or not. And all with that stupid ********ing $800 fruit branding on it.

I think the word I was looking for is mature, but it's not just devices, it's the whole streaming experience/ecosystem.

I would agree about the Apple TV to an extent. I think Apple identified the streaming device as a market it needed to be in, and put something together. I have the 4k, and it works well with DirecTV Now. I got 2 Apple devices buying 2 separate three month subscriptions for $150 each. I think they now just offer the Roku for free, with a one month, $55 subscription. But, my expectation is that the Apple experience will be pretty solid, just like iPhone. Any apps will be well maintained.

The other aspect is the smart TV. I don't see a need for a separate streaming device for a smart TV. I have a 2 year old Samsung smart TV, no DirecTV Now app. The current model year has a DirecTV Now app. Of course, the issue is app maintenance.

Anyhow, I have never had an issue with ESPN+ on either the iPhone, Apple TV, or the wife's android.
