No, you do waste a slot--as you get compensation from MLS if he goes. Otherwise the team that picks him gets it.

Depends on the compensation amount and how that compensation is used.

Still would like to know who gets to make that list if Gregg is leaving.

As I recall, you also get first dibs on the player if they return to MLS.

I think you protect him either way. As I noted above I can't come up with a full list of guys to protect, it's not like the days of Iro/Evans (I was always an Evans guy) at the end of a list of MLS Cup winning players you'd love to see back. You protect Steffen to keep his MLS rights even if he leaves. I agree he's due a raise if he stays in the league. Goalkeepers need to play. Euro teams have reserve leagues and things, but I have to believe getting 34 guaranteed starts in Columbus has to be as good as that. There is something to be said for fighting for your spot and the pressure to improve that puts on a guy. But games are important, we have those to offer.

He's not going to be the USA #1 unless he's the #1 for his club team. I appreciate wanting to challenge himself, but where is he going to go where he's the #1 FOR SURE?

Same with Trapp, he's got a captain for life gig here. He's making good "Columbus Money" where if he plays his cards right he could retire with a couple Donatos franchises in 10 years and never have to work another day in his life.

He's MLS good. Not great. He's a fine guy to have in the spot we play him. Could he challenge himself with a move to Greece or Holland and get 10% better and make 15% more (and pay 20% more in taxes)? Sure. Is it better for him that what he has here? I'm not so sure.

Anyway, I'd like to see a youth movement start next year. Trapp will be 26,we have 3-4 years of his prime for a new coach to build a championship team around him. I'd love for Steffen to be a part of that too.

Compensation is an elastic term when applied to MLS rules.

Players to protect- Steffen, Trapp, Artur and Zardes. That's it. Williams and Jiminez have value as backups but I can't think of anyone else we absolutely need. Milton, Opoku, Hansen and Sosa have age and potential on their side but none has shown me at this point they are a long term starter.

I had high hopes for the guy but I don't think he will make it.

I disagree about Milton. Opoku is protected automatically. The rest I can mostly agree with you on.

Milton makes too many defensive mistakes 1v1 and is out of position often. These are things that can be learned but until then they can also be exploited.

I'm in full agreement with hungariansteven. I think at this point my protected list would look like...

Steffen, Trapp, Zardes, Artur, Afful, Valenzuela (can a player on loan be taken?), Meram, Hansen, Sosa, Abubakar, and Mullins...in about that order of priority more or less.

Steffen: Good chance he moves on and that's fine. We need him with us so we get that transfer money though. Yeah it's only like 60% or something after the league takes there cut (feel free to correct me on this)...but we just denied a nearly 4 mil offer from Bristol City which means we think we can do better than that even. And if for whatever reason we dont sell...he absolutely must stay with us and should probably get something like a DP contract bought down with TAM.

Trapp: Low chance of him moving on although he has options. Blackburn offered 1.25 mil but that's probably not worthwhile to us when you consider his tenure, leadership, and those kinds of considerations and probably isnt worth it to him either. Definitely protect the career captain.

Zardes: A capable striker in his prime at a decent price. Must protect.

Artur: Young, high value, starter on a very reasonable wage at a position were suddenly a little thin at with Abu leaving. Must protect.

Afful: Definitely over the hill but still performing at a high level and is an allstar caliber RB for this league. It wouldn't be devastating to lose him as we should probably be seeking out his successor sooner than later anyway but I think he easily gets snatched up in an expansion draft if exposed. Protect.

Valenzuela: Very good newcomer (on loan, not ours yet). Hes not perfect but I think he definitely has room for improvement and that he likely will improve into one of...if not the best LB in the league. Definitely protect (if we even have to?)

Meram: I could live with losing Meram again as he hasn't been able to find his old form, but hes worth saving for reasons like Trapp. Hes a leader and has cache with the fans. And most of all....he still has transfer value...at least within the league.

Hansen: I dont know that he has a really high ceiling but if nothing else hes solid wing depth. And the only winger accomplishing anything for us this year. I would make sure he stays around. I like Opoku too but hes safe as a GA. I could see him being attractive if not protected.

Sosa: I think Sosa has potential to be a successor to Higuain even if that doesn't pan out....hes the only good option we have for that position and hes still young and promising so I say protect him.

Abubakar: Definitely a proven commodity and I think he would be extremely attractive in the expansion draft. With our depth at CB I'm not worried about having a CB stolen from us.. I just hate to lose a valuable trade piece like him....and I still want to see him grow more with us. Definitely protect.

Mullins: While hes not essential....I think he fits this team well and that we finally found the right 2nd/backup striker for this team. He would be another attractive acquisition in the draft. Protect.

I also agree about Mensah. I think hes definitely came into his own with us finally. I'm willing to gamble with him though. I think his salary will be offputting considering hes decent but not great. And worse case scenario...were still pretty deep at CB... If he were to get taken...that should definitely open up an opportunity for Crognale.

As interim coach, I would like to know if we have any worthwhile prospect in the pipeline for the not too distant future. Can anybody fill the college scouting role?

I dont follow college soccer closely but just like to know who's good and might make the jump to MLS. I was just perusing Top Drawer Soccer for whatever thats worth? and we have a few academy products decently ranked but all four are freshman.

Aboubacar Keita at Virginia is the #1 ranked freshman in the country. That's noteworthy.

    20. Isaiah Parente @ Wake Forest
    60. Colin Biros @ Akron
    70. Sean Zawadzki @ Georgetown

I recall Keita, Biros, Zawadzki training with the Crew in preseason as well. Is it peculiar that theres nobody rated in the sophomore to senior classes but all of a sudden we produced a group of talented guys in that particular freshman class? Is this possibly indicative of some kind if positive change in our academy? I really dont know much about any of this but am curious.

You don’t get dibs on that player if a transfer fee was paid.

I am not sure about that--but MLS rules are Calvinball. The one constant is that they always change.

I agree about his defense, but it is hard to find a LB in MLS with his attacking skills. He is also still really young, so I imagine he will get better at that position.

What a smart way to get around trying to answer the question of the Crew. They may have already been planning it this way, but if they didn't and they used this as a scape goat, it's pretty clever.

Nice! I love it. We lose no one and Cincy cannot take anyone from us, or anyone else who lost a player to LAFC.

It will be the first ever expansion draft where we lose no one, no?

Technically it is a continuation of last year's expansion, where we lost Jukka.
