I tend to be moderate to liberal in my thinking and Im not very religious. Despite that I seem to find myself on the other side of this issue and can't avoid looking back at the Rapinoe protests of a year ago. In both cases a player in the US player pool chose to take action because they strongly believed in something. In both cases fans quickly lined up on both sides of the issue leading to heated arguments. I don't think either player was treated any better or worse by USSoccer but in Rapinoe's case the matter was settled by USSoccer making it clear that if she wanted to play for the team she was required to stand during the anthem. My question is was Hinkle given a similar ultimatum and if so did she refuse to set her beliefs on the subject aside and wear the uniform regardless? If this was the case I would feel much better about the situation than trying to believe as Ellis has stated that Hinkle simply wasn't good enough to make this roster.
Tom Sermanni is the new head coach of New Zealand. Interesting time for Football Ferns who need to qualify for World Cup at tournament next month. They should lay over the field— Dan Lauletta (@TheDanLauletta) October 25, 2018
Unfortunately (and it's far from your fault), this illuminates nothing. I honestly have no idea, minute-to-minute what those words mean, and I know that my notion of them is nowhere near what 90% of people would say. It's interesting, because if you take away the difference in "showiness", Rapinoe's and Altidore's actions are similarly radical when you factor in the purported respective reasonings behind them. Yet that showiness (or lack thereof, more properly) in Jozy's case allowed him to avoid controversy almost entirely, for several years. And still, he hasn't received huge amounts of flak that I'm aware of. Hinkle's problems could have been potentially obviated by allowing the player to choose the number style on the day (though that would have been thorny in an "everybody's doing it" sense). That assumes such a simple option would have been agreeable to the player. We'll probably never know for sure.
Sure feels like it. I guess USSoccer wanted to hold off until 1) they knew we were not playing in the Playoff home and home - potential November conflict and 2) they wanted to appear focused ONLY on winning CONCACAF and nothing else.
This played a big part in the quick turnaround as well: U.S. Soccer had previously scheduled matches against Switzerland and the Netherlands, but both teams did not get the results they needed to win their groups on the final match day of UEFA Women’s World Cup qualifying. Both teams were subsequently forced into the playoffs, the final two legs of which will take place during this FIFA window in November. Switzerland and the Netherlands will meet for the last World Cup berth for Europe.
Bt isn't telling us the simplest solution? If Hinkle has decided to not to play for the US because she wasn't prepared to compromise on her religious beliefs then USSoccer should just say that. It puts everything on Hinkle and Ellis doesn't have to skirt the issue with fake call ups and roster decisions that make her look less than insightful.
Danielle Colaprico, Emily Fox, Adrianna Franch, Allie Long, Merritt Mathias, Jessica McDonald and Andi Sullivan are in the mix for the #USWNT's November friendlies against Portugal and Scotland. The full roster is out: pic.twitter.com/mbc2e9oVmo— The Equalizer (@EqualizerSoccer) October 26, 2018
Midfield ... in are Colaprico, Sullivan & Long ................ out is Brian with Zerboni injured Forward ... in is McDonald Defender ... in is Fox, Mathias ................... out is Mace with Davidson injured GK ... in is Franch Ive liked Fox since I first saw her with the 20s but I don't like Ellis picking college players at this time of year. It is especially ironic that she doesn't take the UCLA player but picks a UNC player. McDonald earned the shot with her playoff performance but I still don't see how she fits the system. Franch and Mathias were givens since they were on the recent practice squad. Most interesting thing is the midfield where Ellis seems to be looking for midfielder who fit her system better. While it will be interesting to see new players Im still not sure this is what she is looking for.
I'm kinda glad Mace wasn't called up again, she needs to be with UCLA during this crucial stretch of the season and tournament.
As should Fox ... some day there will be a professional league they can draw players from. Tactically it's absurd tho. At CONCACAF with O'Hara starting u had Sonnett to sub in at either RB or CB plus Mace. Now with O'Hara out u'll likely start Sonnett and not have a real CB on the bench.
.......And now for something completely different............... ( hey, it's football, and it is in the news and includes media). I don't have a bucket list, but if I make one, this will be on it: https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...ack-running-through-its-stadium-a6691271.html

I don't mind red. I like red. However I do not like monochromatic jerseys. So this is a bit meh for me. I want to see the numbers and names on the back to fully form an opinion. But I would have liked some different colored trim on the shorts or something. The print design is an interesting touch. But you can't see it from a distance. The collar and overall cut look OK. Hopefully the home kit is better.
We don't win any tournaments in red...... that's all I'm saying. Let's hope the home kit is still white.
The home/primary kit is always white. The only exception, if you count it, would be the hoops kit. And the USWNT won the 2012 Olympics wearing mostly the away navy kit (the year that the hoops kit was in use).
Yeah I just have major PTSD from when we lost in red kits over the years. Why do we get one for this World Cup? If my history works itself right, didn't we lose really bad in 2003 in a red kit?
Yes, the US wore red in the 2003 semifinal against Germany. But we wore white in the 2007 semifinal versus Brazil. So maybe they cancel each other out?
I don't hate it, but I don't love it. But I'm not making a judgment until I see the primary/home kit. I hope it has some trim to it.
oh wow I didn't catch her at the game! I guess the ladies got a little vacation time until the next trips.
Jozy is a Jehovah's Witness and, as such, doesn't salute the flag (by placing his hand over his heart) or sing the national anthem. Jehovah's Witnesses believe their allegiance belongs to God's Kingdom, which they view as an actual government. They refrain from saluting the flag of any country or singing nationalistic songs, which they believe are forms of worship, although they may stand out of respect.
And he fairly conspicuously stares at the ground most of the time. There is no acknowledgment of the flag at all, actually.
is that unusual? i think i've seen other players not sing or not put their hand over their heart, but i don't remember specifically now. never thought it out of order.
