Can confirm Joel’s report. Great scoop by him. https://t.co/HlBdwrVls9— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) October 8, 2018 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
W-L record via Wikipedia: Some recent articles on him... May 31 2018: Matias Almeyda won't return as Chivas manager July 10 2018: Matias Almeyda: I wouldn't refuse job offer to manage Mexico or Argentina
Who knows how this will turn out in terms of on-field results, but... Jesse (plus Fox, Fisher, etc) : He just got us a coach with -a well known name -a good track record -in demand This couldn't be more different from Stahre, who was a questionable hire from day one and turned out to be the worst coach in MLS history. At what may be the low point in modern Quakes history, this looks like the opposite of "a small team" move... Hopefully this also signals a willingness by Fisher to spend on players, and a willingness by Jesse to bring in Latin Americans instead of his usual Euro guys.
I concur, the real optimism for me is that Matias is clearly got a good vision of great Latin American talent, and I believe that we can find some great players to help us without spending millions. I suspect that we may also see more willingness to jettison some of the under-performing European talent (paging Mr. Eriksson, paging Mr. Qwiberg, paging Mr. Affolter).
It's certainly a solid data point. I really doubt Almeyda was eager to come here to coach Joel Qwiberg. Hopefully the historical incompetence and performance of 2018 has awoken a sleeping giant and Fisher is now fully focused on righting the ship.
I wonder how long this has been in the works. Did they start talking to Almeyda before Stahre was fired? That was only 2 weeks ago...
I'm a bit shocked that there is anything but universal praise for this move from Quakes fans... hell I was ready to be satisfied with Marc Dos Santos! Maybe the "MLS experience" folks would still prefer him over Almeyda but I'll take this instead thank you very much. Maybe if we could land Guillermo Barros Schelotto that would be preferable (since he also checks that "MLS experience" box) but that's pretty much the only reasonably possible hire (Zidane isn't walking through that door) that would be better, and did anyone really think GBS was leaving Boca Juniors for the Quakes? Looking across MLS, which teams wouldn't want Matias Almeyda as their coach? -Atlanta has Tata Martino and he's doing great, so they're set (unless he leaves) -NYRB had Armas take over for Marsch a few months ago but he's doing quite well so far, plus they have a system in place -LAFC might want to stick with Bradley given how well it's gone -SKC and Columbus would think twice given how ingrained Vermes and Berhalter are in everything they're doing That's 5 teams, being VERY generous... maybe just 2-3... or just 1... or 0 if Tata bolts. Even NYCFC (Dom Torrent has been mediocre at best since replacing Vieira... it's beginning to look like Pep Guardiola may have been the key piece of that partnership all along ), TFC, and Seattle fans are probably jealous of us right now... how often does that happen??
I hardly think this move erases the foul taste of a decade of Fisherball, but...it sounds like a step in the right direction. let's hope Fisher is just as ready to bring in the players we're going to need.
Another thing: the Quakes will go from a team that not even their own fans want to watch in 2018, to being in the spotlight from Argentina to Mexico, both from the media and fans. More so the longer he coaches here, and the more players he brings in. Also will be interesting to see if the Quakes can better connect to at least some of the local soccer fans who don't come to Avaya except for LigaMX friendlies...
This sounds very promising. How long does all deadweight have left on our contracts? Hyka and Vako and Erickson?
I know this isn't close to the list of top 100 problems with the Quakes, but can I just say how nice it would be to finally have a well dressed coach after years of Yallop/Kinnear/Stahre...
This cannot be serious. Is this serious. https://t.co/LmX1bcxVuc— Will Parchman (@WillParchman) October 8, 2018 Guys, this this unprecidented. It’s the CONCACAF/UEFA equivalent of Mourinho joining Trabzonspor or something. It’s insane.— Will Parchman (@WillParchman) October 8, 2018 well, except Mourinho has been exposed as a fraud and is having yet another meltdown...
I saw Matías Almeyda playing in Italy from 1997 -2004 for Lazio, Parma and Inter. He was a great defensive midfielder. He scored an incredible goal against young Parma GK Gigi Buffon in a 1-2 win which contributed to Lazio's 1999-2000 scudetto victory. He kept on playing until he was 35 but after age 30 , he was pretty much done as he couldn't maintain his tenacious level play at an older age. I've never put much importance in a coach. Especially in MLS because I always believed if the players weren't any good, the coach couldn't do much either. If however, Almeyda can bring in players who played like he did, the Quakes could be a pretty good team. Wishing him the best of luck!
What a Golazo! Hopefully I never have to say his name again, but could Stahre even run 100 meters without collapsing? What an upgrade all around.
