Sophia Smith discusses her first career goal in Stanford's home-opening win over USF [[video]

The Card started off with a tepid H1 but finished strong to claim a win against the visitors from San Francisco.

Very short bench, missing a lot of players, 1st XI featured 3 frosh and only 4 starters from last season’s championship. Essentially fielding a new squad, resulting in a disjointed and tepid H1.

1st goal was shades of the last goal scored at the Q last season. Their GK punts, Hiatt and Jordan win the headers, Civana mugged while running towards the ball, Sophia runs with the ball and scores. 10 seconds after their GK punts, she picks it up at the back of her net with none of her teammates ever touching it.

What a way for Sophia Smith to start her collegiate debut. Although when she’s not scoring goals, she does her best impersonation of Verloo’s touch and Press’ accuracy and decision-making. Still, an undeniable talent. Possesses qualities that are hard to teach - a go-to-goal player, takes on defenders, takes the trash and turns garbage into gold. She will score a lot of goals in college this way because of the dearth of quality defenders. Very dangerous operating outside of the PA, with or without the ball. The key is not to let her get a head of steam, otherwise u r toast. However, just like Press, a mortal inside the PA. Does not, or in Press’ case, can not finish sitters inside the PA. Not an out-and-out PA striker, not yet anyway, but sample size is only 1 game. I see in Sophia shades of the Juventus Henry. Once she develops and refines her technique, she can be comparable to the Arsenal Henry - cutting in from the left, dragging the ball, or leaving the defender with blistering pace, and then scoring at will once inside the PA.

USF scored their goal through a combination of poor decisions from Stanford. An innocuous-looking ball sent into the PA was flicked by McG for a CK. With no opponent within 20 yards, Rood should have claimed it. If u want a full-time job, you have to own and boss your box, even your defender. Instead of controlling the ball with no one challenging for it, McG inexplicably shanks it for a CK. In the ensuing CK, the Card commit the cardinal sin of letting the ball bounce inside the box, USF got to it and scored.

Stung, the Card fought back. Less than a minute later, Macario was fouled for a PK, which she promptly deposited. She also scored another goal in H2 off a rebound. A minute after that, Civana launched a left-footed missile for the 4th. 10 minutes later, Civana was taken down inside the PA, Jordan deposited the PK for the final score of 5-1.

Goad played the full 90 at midfield, and she looked more comfortable than I’ve ever seen her play, by playing centrally than at the perimeter.

Girma had some good moments, but she really showed her quality playing at midfield. She was able to utilize more of her passing, and showed her range and lateral quickness.

Nice to get a win after a disjointed start. Hopefully there’s more to look forward to, as the Card are only operating at about 60% of what they’re capable of, with that banged-up roster and all. Roster management will be crucial with such a thin roster and a difficult away slate at BYU and at Minnesota, in addition to Tierna’s unavailability due to national team duties. Hope the Card can play 2 complete games next week. :cautious:

I am the father of Tegan McGrady, whom you refer to as McG, and I was pointed to this forum by a Stanford parent. I am not sure why you think it is appropriate to call out young female athletes, however doing so and hiding behind an alias is pathetic.
I have read many of your posts now and I am not sure why you tend to point out Tegan's mistakes, calling her out by name, more so than others. There are plenty of mistakes that happen on the field every game, not just by my daughter. You have made it obvious that you are not a fan of hers, so out of the respect for an athlete who is giving her all, please stop calling her out.

Critique kinda comes with the territory of moving into visible roles on major teams. Sports reporting, and even more so online opinion and analysis forums, would be pretty banal if the analysis ended at “8/25: all athletes gave it their all”. Not trying to be rude, but it may be best to stay off forums such as this if you are offended by people’s analysis of the games, which inherently includes comments on the quality of play of individual contributors. Asking people to hold their opinions in online forums isn’t a winning strategy on any corner of the internet. I wish your daughter the best. And if the best comes... she’ll only get on bigger stages with more critical eyes.

No need to be so sensitive. I don’t think cachundo said anything that were out of line. There is nothing wrong with fair criticism, and high profiled players are always subject to more criticisms than others. If this is too much, it could be a tough road ahead once she plays at the next stage of her career. I can’t speak for her of course, but I can’t imagine her liking you defending her like this on forums like this.. just an opinion...

Thanks for your feedback “sweepsit and 6peternorth9”, it’s unfortunate I can’t call you by your real names unlike real sports writers.

I don't like posting my personal info on forums, but shoot me a message if you're on the peninsula. I'll buy you a beer next time you're in SF. I wanna come down and see a Stanford game at some point this season. Seems like it could be an epically quality team.

Aliases are very common here and don't seem to cause a problem. The Colorado forum has a bunch of them including me. I don't think any of us are hiding.

I'm more of an "All athletes gave it their all" observer because I am not that knowledgeable about the finer points of the game. But some contributors really are, and cachundo is most definitely one of them. Her (his?) comments sound like they come from a thorough understanding of what's going on on the field, not a personal vendetta against any players.

Tegan is obviously a highly competent soccer player or she wouldn't be where she is, and I would guess that anybody who follows Stanford soccer knows that.

    Stanford 2-1 Evil Empire [F/OT1]

Huge victories this weekend for women's soccer, but also came at a huge cost. Tierna Davidson probably lost for the season as a result of studs-up tackle on her ankle. Happened right in front of AR1 and she didn't even raise her flag. CR issued just a caution. And Xiao was nudged from behind after completing a forward pass, right in front of the CR, and the guy did nothing. Possible knee injury and did not return.

The game was won early in OT1 by a wonderful sequence. Kiki won a ball deep in the attacking third. Macario eventually hopscotched her way past 4 defenders to the endline, and threaded a pass to Haley, who slotted it home for the game-winner.

Much-deserved for Haley, who was being hacked the entire game. I guess the officials are not aware of persistent infringement. Haley was outstanding the entire weekend for her hold-up play. Now if her teammates can just score off her excellent feeds, these games will be put to bed early, and Sunday's opponent would have been compelled to play soccer.

Excellent hold-up play from Macario the entire weekend, feeding Haley for the game-winner and Jordan in the 1st game. Her hold-up play has vastly improved from the previous season and adds another dangerous element to her game.

Next up are Cal Poly and Santa Clara. Don't know much about Poly. I thought they were good last season, but Santa Clara this season are fielding their best team in about 10 years

I hope Tierna is OK. Huge loss on a number of notes. Huge to Stanford, huge to the US and huge to her if it means missing out on a special year both collegiate and WNT. Speedy Recovery to a great kid

I am no expert When it comes to the nuances of soccer rules. Does this type of sliding tackle (studs up) foul get red carded very often in the college game?
I don’t recall seeing this get redcarded. That is not to say it shouldn’t, just that I don’t remember seeing that getting red carded.

Don't sleep on Santa Clara. Incredibly well-coached, get the most out of their roster to the point of overachieving, and the team has good soccer IQ.

Macario is so next level talented its ridiculous. Very sorry to hear about Tierna. Feel like we're watching History unfold with Stanford as the next two are very winnable games.

North Carolina needs to get some players back and then they will terrorize some teams.

That Stanford-Notre Dame game was painful to watch. Stanford toyed with ND for stretches of the game. Completely unimpressed with Norman (not that I expected them to win) but he has taken a team that was competitive, passed well, and played with intensity under Romagnolo, backwards. Too much talent on that roster to underperform like that, and they're doing it consistently.

Any chance Davidson will redshirt? Or has she played in too many games for her to do so?

Too late for that. No point either way. Can’t see her sticking around for her 5th year anyway. Sad you can get away with plays like that..

The new redshirt rule for football allows for an athlete to redshirt if they have played less than 4 games. Davidson had played 3. I’m assuming if she wanted to stay an extra year she could use title 9 on an appeal and get it. But as previous poster said she would be only costing herself $

I believe the rule apart from football in part is that she must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater. If she's played in only 3 games, that is less than 30% of the season and she would qualify for a redshirt.

On top of the fact that she would easily be awarded an injury red-shirt, as well.

The Card created numerous goal-scoring opportunities, but were unable to convert enough of them, and this one ended in a 1-1 tie.

Sophia Smith scored late in H1 after getting in between the defenders.

The Card had numerous opportunities to put the game away in H2 but were unable to convert. I felt the game change when Hiatt was injured. She was playing well up to that point and giving a semblance of balance and stability in the midfield. All game long, the opponent was pressing the defenders and the GK, daring them to play out of the back, which i thought was a very good tactic since Tierna and X are two of the team’s best ball-handlers. Hiatt was holding very well on her own, winning balls, as we boomed balls out of the back. When she went down, the changes made were baffling and eventually proved to be inadequate at best, necessitating another change.

The injury in this game and the previous games robbed the team of its best ball-winners, and the inability to win balls in midfield and connect up top frustrated the team.

I was disappointed not in the outcome, but in the lack of composure. Composure in front of net, composure with the ball, and just letting emotions get the better of you.

Up to that point, the opponent was not really creating anything dangerous, but the team kind of forgot that, and let the blood boil.

When you look at it, the opponent had 2 golden goal-scoring opportunities in the entire game, both in H2. We gifted them both opportunities, and they almost won the game because of those. The 1st was the PK, luckily the GK got to it, but we failed to clear and they scored. The 2nd opportunity was when the GK went on an expedition 30 yards from goal, failed, and all the opponent had to do was deposit the ball on an open net. Let the shooter, if she can, beat you as gk. NEVER beat your own team pretending to be a field player. Fortunately, the shooter proved to be quite inept in front of an empty net.

We had chances to score. A LOT of chances to score and put away this game early. We didn’t. Story of the game.

Fortunately, this was a non-conference game. The fun really starts next weekend when Arizona visit. Interesting team who play helter-skelter, like their hair’s on fire. The Pac isn’t won on the 1st weekend, but you could sure lose it on the 1st weekend.

I don't think mcgrady got the SLS reference. She's fine. Was in a massive bike-pickup truck accident several years ago, she being the bike, and now knows a whole lot about post-concussion syndrome and traumatic brain injuries, permanent ones. Fortunately, it was a block away from an Emergency Room. Unless you knew her really well, you wouldn't notice. But, she decided law practice (representing Indian tribes including on Capitol Hill -- she admits she was a K Street lobbyist) wasn't going to work post-injury, so she retired notwithstanding her Stanford JD and now is a superstar trainer of dog owners. And, she's very happy.

I have to confess to something. Every time I see your moniker, I want to say "Gesundheit.":)
