"Os dois norte-americanos foram companheiros na selecção de sub-20 e no Varzim." "The 2 north americans were teammates in the u20 team and at Varzim." I know nothing about these guys outside of the last 3 weeks, so I am just looking at this as written. I am just the messenger.
Ah, that's a much better translation: "his friend, compatriot and former U-20 team mate and Varzim." I thought it was google being screwy and guessed that it was a reference to both of them being called into a US u20 camp this Spring.
Despite the article reporting as such, Keaton had left Varzim by the time Payne transferred from Estoril Praia. They did, however, each have their first and only U-20 call-up for the England Pre-World Cup camp this year. So I guess the article is correct in that they are "former U-20 teammates."

Has anyone found anything if this a deal with Varzim or Varzim B. Will he be up with the first team from now on?
Picked up at least 10 goals this season: Glad to score my first League goal with the U-23s! Have to keep working and pushing for more! 🙌🏾⚽️— Stephen Payne (@stephenopayne) February 19, 2017 Happy to reach 10 ⚽️. American-born Stephen Payne made his professional debut for Portuguese second division side Varizim today. Talented player, interested to see where he lands. Brother of Toni Payne, who plays for the Sevilla women. pic.twitter.com/X65xMKJH4k— Will Parchman (@WillParchman) July 21, 2018 Looks like he played in something called the Taca de liga for Varzim. So I guess this means he's promoted to the main forum. @TheFalseNine
Taca da Liga is the Portuguese equivalent of the League Cup, i.e. a secondary cup tournament. Varzim are playing a smaller top-division club, Moreirense, in the second round. If they win that game, the third round is a three-game group stage, which could be an opportunity for minutes for a young player trying to break in.

Payne, never one to shy away from self promotion (not that there is anything wrong with that) tweeted an article from O Jogo that is apparently in the print only version. It is headlined "Payne shines in the league cup."

Played 90 (at right back), as Varzim came back for an emotional 2-1 win over Os Belenenses, currently 10th in the Portuguese first division.
Btw, his sister, Toni, who plays pro for Sevilla, is second in the voting for player of the matchday (Jornada 2). You can show your love, if you are so inclined, by voting for her here
Starts on the bench today as Varzim travel to face Keaton Parks and Benfica B, in Portugal's Segunda Liga
Stephen remained on the bench Sunday as Varzim fell 2 - 1 at Sg Sacavenense in Portugal's Taça de Portugal
Stephen went the full 90 for Varzim, as they traveled to #3 Estoril and battled to a 2 - 2 draw in Portugal's Segunda Liga
