We found the formula, we just need the other team to have one less than us. Sarachan is a genius!

No, probably not. Other sports use that term too. "He's got a swing like a Mantle or a Cobb". Or "He's like another Buster Posey" etc.

my point is simply about pathways to the top of the game and how for us players, perhaps more than any other country, and especially more than any euro country, that usmnt involvement is absolutely vital.

    wood's performance/worthiness is irrelevant.

in fact, if he is not good it even makes my point about who to include in these games even more important....

i was responding to the idea that the usmnt is not about development...b/c someone said national team play is just elite players coming together and playing....

well i think ...in the usmnt..its not so simple....

usmnt inclusion is important to development of players.

it is important that the ones who are included will be the ones who are worthy and will be there in 3-4 years b/c those spots are precious...those "free passes" (provided good performance) to better clubs....are limited in number.

I need to correct that one.

USA has been the only CONCACAF team to win a game this window, against professional players.

What was the reason for Wood over Nova with 10 minutes to go? Was Sarachan looking for the DOS A CERO?

Is it weird to think, "If only Greene had better quality around him?" Actually I'm happy for him. He got a lot of grief for making the WC 2014 roster and even more for taking Landycake's spot. WTF was Greene supposed to do... Turn the WC down? Glad to see him doing well for us.

Like I said, thirty years of the same thing. Nothing better than beating them.

MM took a big step. Adams took another step. As a whole, the whole team that may not have experienced this before has taken a big step. Congrats.

Very impressed with Steffan. Real deal.

Hope Wes is ok. Coach is a slow learner. Someone should let him know who that tall kid from Fortuna is.

Well, I guess that's another thing we learned: we look a lot better when the other team has only 10 players and refuses to bunker.

If I didn't see a bunch of interesting prospects bubbling up, I'd be a bit worried too as right now the attack when Pulisic isn't around is reminiscent of how toothless the forwards were in the run up to and during the '06 World Cup, ditto the '14 after Altidore went down. However, I really like quite a few attacking players we have in development that aren't here right now: guys like Sargent, Amon, Sabbi, maybe Tillman if he goes with us could be added, a bit further down we have Taitague, Carleton, Llanez, Taitague, the waiting game with Wright, and the begging and pleading with Siebatcheu, you can throw in Nova too, you have other central midfielders like Durkin who can help on the offensive end as well. To my mind we have a giant pile of prospects, both on the cusp, as well as a few years away that are very exciting, plus we've been playing without our most talented midfielder and our most talented forward prospect.

When we saw the call in sheet for this pair of friendlies we always knew it was going to be a grind. When the strength of the 23 is on defensive end (center backs, full backs, and defensive and holding oriented midfielders) it's going to be a slog, we flat out had no playmaker, no director for the attack in place, nobody that could simply hold the ball, let alone hold it, dribble it, and deliver inventive through balls, crosses, and combination passing plays. One could say yada yada Trapp, but I don't see it. He's decent enough for the group stage of a Gold Cup, but against a knockout round World Cup side and a contender to win it all, I just don't see it. So to my mind, the results weren't surprising. We brought a defensive team, with a defensive, plodding coach lacking in creativity and not surprisingly the team seemed lacking in ideas in terms of the attack, but largely stalwart in the back.

When qualifying comes around we will have a rock solid defense, the best in the region, no doubt. Add in Sargent and Pulisic alone, if both are ready and healthy, and we'll have no issues scoring. Add in guys like Amon, Sabbi, Taitague, Carleton, if we're lucky and they develop and choose us by then guys like Llanez, Tillman, and Siebatcheu and look out.

While I'll never again consider our qualification campaign a virtual lock like I did back in 2009, I do think we'll be bringing our best team to qualifying since '08-'09 and if the team is healthy and the teens and early 20 somethings continue to develop, it could easily be the best team ever. I can't say I won't be worried, again, after '17 that won't ever happen again, but I'm more confident in this side than in probably any side since 2004 and 2008.

I guess I probably should have been more clear. It wasn't a comment about how good...or bad....woods is.

When trying to make a point about how our players use the USMNT as a ticket to Europe....you used a kid who was signed by a European youth academy at 15....over half a decade before he was capped. Hell...years before his first youth cap.

I get the argument...you chose the worst possible example to plead your case. Woods ascendency to the top level in Germany literally has nothing to do with his national team play.

Ok....you could have chosen jermain Jones or someone like that....and that may have been a worse choice to prove your point. But not by much.

The match changed when Green came on and we switched to a 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1. Not sure why it took Sarachan so long to recognize that Green is a central player and offers good qualities to the group when played centrally.

Credit to Sarachan for giving direction/permission to Green to be aggressive and find the game. We saw the Green that many who watch Furth see, a player that has many great qualities in the center of the park is very involved on both sides of the ball.

Robinson is a playmaker but reminds me of a younger Timmy Chandler. He is a horse but will have some rough spots.

Well I basically got what I wanted out of this match. The US, particularly in the second half, put out effort and really tried to win most any challenge that happened. I saw none, or very little, of the "my job is done so I will stand around and wait for something to happen" attitude that I have seen in most games this year. Most of the time the US players worked to get into a good position to challenge for the ball or provide options for the attack.

I am pretty pleased with this outing. It is, finally, a good starting place for the future. I see glimmers of a light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope it is not a freight train looking to run us down before we get out of the tunnel.

well perhaps you didnt follow wood's career very closely...

he was about to quit soccer because he was failing in europe...frozen out of 1860 munich.....jurgen klinsmann, as much as i didnt like him...rescued bobby.

he brought him into usmnt despite not playing in bl2...and kept playing him despite bad performances...DEVELOPING HIM on the national team...and it worked!!

wood thanked klinsmann and always fought for him...and came out in defense after he was fired....ever since JK has not been usmnt coach...bobby has fallen off.

okay....wood didnt get to EU through USMNT...but without usmnt play after almost failing in EU...he wouldve not made it to the bundesliga for sure, imo.

usmnt involvement can help players already in EU as much as those in MLS.

for instance, i would call up emerson hyndman to try and help his career and several others.

Not to quibble but the team was definitely playing an odd 4-1-4-1 to start. I only mention it because it was a bizzare lineup to begin with.

I agree. We did start in a 4-1-4-1 with players ill suited and Acosta playing as a RW.

When Green came on you could see a switch to more of a 4-4-1-1 with Green more forward and Trapp and Adams side by side in almost a double #6. In the 2nd half it was more of a 4-2-3-1 with Weah and Acosta more tucked in as AMs and Green as a CAM.

Once we brought Robinson on it was definitely a decent functioning 4-2-3-1.

Green was playing a free role, moving from the wing to the center according to where Weah was positioned. Also, Weah was acting more as a wide forward in the first half.

McKennie tended to stay centrally, which means he wasn't close enough to Weah to create as much danger as later Green created playing closer to the wing.

I like what I saw for the most part.
I hate to sound like a broken record but I am really glad we have gone with the youth movement since the debacle in Trinidad.
The more these kids play and get experience the more confidence they will get.

But the continuing problem facing this program is the leadership. If USSF cannot get it together, it won't matter how good any current of future US players are. Those players will be held back by incompetent coaching. That has been at 60 - 75% of the US's current problems on the field.

The problem is there is hardly any improvement since they got together vs. Portugal. In my opinion, the issue is with the coaching staff and player selection. Weah can play in either side, we didn't have a similar player for the LW. I would have called Union's Picault instead of Rodan. I would have used Nova instead of Wood for the final 10 minutes. I think this coach is just looking after himself, to get the gig permanently rather than finding the right combination of players. Anyone that studies this team knows that Green's best sport is in the middle, not the wing.

yeah what the roster is missing is another cmid.

maybe next camp can be about that try and help careers don't worry about the national team at all

    opare
    hyndman
    scott
    finley
    rowe
    gatt
    gyan
    boyd
    gooch
    morales

would be great group to just get slaughtered.

I am glad green did ok against the mexico C team. It also shows how bad davey boy is as a coach he act like to be more offensive they'd have to make 10 changes. Nope...just limit the team to three dmids and have two guys with limited offensive skills and things may open up.

I don't think 'permission' is the word. THis group of players will be in revolt soon because the coach is not only a bad coach, he's an interim bad coach. Think weakling substitute spanish teacher. bloodbath soon if MLSNT doesn't hire a coach soon. I guess we all have to wait for Columbus to go out of the playoffs before MLS hires a new coach.

none of davey's ideas make sense.

this is what you get when you name an interim coach. he is getting a really long interview process and this past week you can tell he is really trying to push for the job now. He took a shot at pulisic over not playing and not playing hard when he did play earlier and now is all about how much he likes him and its just bad luck he isn't there but can't wait to get him back(clear someone has talked to him about his other comments). The scary part is if you saw his interview is that he was saying that there is nothing wrong with the system in the us its working great and everything is wonderful...who do you thinking he is kissing up to? He is trying to get the job.

While you're not wrong we didn't need another CM at least Emo has good passing range and can connect in traffic. The rest of the CMs in camp struggle with that. Marky and Roldan didn't get a chance to show what they can do against non MLS so I'll leave them out of it for now.

The issue wasn't necessarily that we had too many CMs but that they were too similar in characteristics.

    I have a radical idea:

11 CBs on the field all at once!
