Lol so for Stielike's first game, we beat Paraguay 2-0 and Nam Taehee scored the second goal. The next game we lost to Costa Rica by 3-1. Will there be another repeat?

This isn't fair. Stielike took over right after that Colombia game and introduced a completely different philosophy, completely destroying the team from the inside over the next 3 years. When STY regained the seat after Stielike's sacking, the team was in shambles, in grave danger of missing the WC, with very limited preparation time to boot. I'm no fan of STY but he took over in the worst situation possible. He really should've deferred to Hiddink, but still.

STY was the only one in the post-PJS era who knew how the team should be playing. That's why we looked so good in those two interim games - because he kept it fast and simple and didn't do anything stupid like trying to turn the KNT into FC Barcelona. He fcked up later because he lacked experience and ability and did stupid things, but that shouldn't invalidate the fact that he was on the right track. He just couldn't execute.

Think about it. We definitely weren't going to beat Germany playing Uli and CKR's tikitaka, HMB's stale 4-2-3-1, or CKH's hoof-it-to-KSW nonsense. Playing a balanced short & long game at a high tempo was the only way we could have beaten Germany, and I guarantee that it will be the only way we can be competitive on the world stage.

Honestly, I think it's just contrarianism for the sake of contrarianism. I recall he was one of the posters who defended Stielike when the team looked completely lost on the pitch and weren't showing any signs of proper training. Now that Bento makes his debut and the team actually shows signs of proper training and tactical cohesion, he's like "OH RELAX YOU NEMBIS". Doesn't make sense at all. IMO it's what happens when someone focuses on narratives instead of actually analyzing what's happening on the pitch. The "Skip Bayless" method of watching sports, if you will.

Nothing that happened before Bento matters. Don't fall victim to the problem of induction. All that matters is what's happening on the pitch. Look at what the players are consciously trying to do. Are they trying to play fast or slow? How do they build up? When and how often do they use long balls? Are they switching play? Are there any differences in formation between attack and defense? How are the fullbacks trying to play? What's the spacing like in the midfield? The intensity of pressure when defending? There are a million things you can look for to determine what kind of style the players are trying to adopt. And when you examine such factors, it's CLEAR AS DAY that the coaching staff has introduced some new principles to the team that we haven't seen with our previous 4-5 managers. And they're just basic things like switching play, things that the team should have been doing ages ago. It's not a guarantee that Bento will succeed, but there's no doubt that the win was deserved and a product of a lot of thinking and deliberation.

Sorry to sound like a douchebag, but if you're not watching soccer as a complex game where two teams are constantly trying to outsmart each other and exploit each other's weaknesses, you're missing out. Some people just watch it mindlessly without paying attention to what's actually going on, only paying attention to the stats and drama. I don't get that.

LOL at ppl who think our NT can suddenly play like France when it's been less than a week since they trained together for the first time.

It's a double post. But it's a good video, because it clearly breaks down what we should expect from Bento's tactics. And we saw many of the elements of Bento's tactics at play in this match. He naturally likes his fullbacks pushing up, so Lee Yong and Hong Chul fit his system and pushed very high up the pitch. You can also see why Kim MH caught his eye as well in the RB role.

Then you see the way he wants his no. 9 and his attacking midfielders play in a variant of the 4-1-4-1 and 4-3-3 system, particularly in the positioning of NTH and JDW. There were also moments where we were defensively exposed due to the high line and the advanced positioning of the midfielders.

Most interesting was how he used JWY (ver. 1) in this match; he quietly had a really good match imo with a clearly defined role. It made the midfield work and elevated the best attributes of KSY. On the other hand, I could see that Bento is intrigued by JHS's versatility, which was very concerning given how JHS is prone to fundamental errors in every position that he plays.

We're going to come up against opposition that break down Bento's preferred system (Chile might be that side). But it was nice to see Bento test out a couple of variations and a wholly different system later in the second half.

Some of you were saying that Costa Rica was disinterested, jet-lagged, etc. Really? They may have been a bit jet lagged. But they didn't play at all disinterested. Rather, they were extremely aggressive and pressed very hard in the first half.

Chile will be an interesting test. They'll have had plenty of time in Korea with their match against Japan having been canceled. And their pressing and ability to build up play will really test Bento's system (and our player's grasp of the system).

But overall, in a very short time, it was very encouraging to have seen our players absorb Bento's system/instructions/tactics and execute it on the pitch in such a convincing manner in this match. It was a comprehensive display without our best GK organizing the backline. Of course, Bento will have to refine and add variations to his tactics. And of course, our players will have moments where they slip up and make mistakes against superior (or inferior) opposition. Nevertheless, Bento has already begun deploying a clearly established system that he's used over the years. And it seems to suit the attributes of our players unlike some of the half-baked nonsense that UliShit was trying to force down the throats of the players and fans during his disastrous era.

Well said. Probably the most complete and realistic analysis of the game I've read so far.

The aggressive play of the fullbacks does concern me a bit. While it will work well against AFC opposition, top teams such as Chile will most likely punish us for it. Curious to see whether Bento will adjust to this.

yeah but it sure feels good out-shooting the opponent and playing WELL for once..
the very fact that NTH was picked up might be a sign of better things to come..

who else wishes LJS was a two inches taller to actually make that header a decent shot? damn i wish he'd at least have tested the keeper.

what a sigh of relief with the way we played today.

Btw, the most exciting moment in this match for me in the match was watching LSW make a great run and try to bend in the ball around the GK. That was vintage LSW of his Barca youth days. I hope he continues to build his career and regain that confidence/creativity in the next few months. An in-form SHM and LSW can be devastating in the Asian Cup.

As an aside, LSW has a body shape that is very similar to Joao Moutinho, a player that Bento managed from early in his career. Different positions and development paths. Nevertheless, if LSW gets his career back on track, I doubt that we'll see Bento use LSW's physical stature as an excuse not to play him like Kim Hak Bum.

KHB never criticized about LSW's physical stature. LSW didnt play for the first few matches bc of flu. He played most of the matches as a sub because of his stamina problems.

KHB hated using LSW (and BSH) in earlier tournaments. Even in this tournament, he favored physically big players and took some pure clunkers with him due to this preference.

Nobody here thought after that game that we are guaranteed to be successful or are going to be France. It's just typical strawman bs that people say to feel smart and important.

One positive is that we now have the player pool, especially in attack, to play different players according to the required play style. Remember when we just had KJC and every other player was a huge step down? Well, now we can rotate between our attacking talents not only to manage stamina but also depending on opposition.

Son really enjoys Bento's style of football, and he wants to continue to play like this. This is probably the first time I am reading Son this excited about Bento and his management, considering he hasn't said anything this deep with our previous managers, especially with Stielike and Shin Tae-yong. And again, this just goes to show you that a good manager matters.

"It was fun and I want to continue to play this style of football. When you play, there are fun games and boring games, for this game in particular(vs Costa Rica), all of the players played hard, and if the other players can't run, then I will run for them, so because we were able to display this, it was very fun to be playing this way.

The truth is that playing for 90 minutes is very difficult, and it's not an easy task either, but it was very fun and I want to continue to play this style football, that way I believe we can keep playing as a whole. If we can maintain the mentality and the positive performance as we did tonight, then there will be a lot of players that will be able to do the same, thus it will be great if the players can recognize this point. I'm saying that we can do well if we work/play hard.

I don't believe that I am a leader, and I still belong this way. I believe I've learned a lot because there's lot of good older brothers around, and of those that show good leadership. I may have worn the captain's armband tonight, but I believe that Ki Sung-yong is still team's leader."

Really? i think some fans suffering from naïveté might’ve thought we’d be very successful after today’s match, haha.

I reckon SHM is captain now because KSY is either going to slowly phase himself out or because he suits more of an on-pitch enforcer role?

Have to say BSK is probably in the top 10% in terms of level-headedness when it comes to internet forums.

Yeah maybe I missed it but I didn't see that kind of blind optimism here. Maybe with more casual fans, but even then I doubt it. Anyone who's followed the KNT even remotely should know that success is never guaranteed...

Hope NTH can turn heads at the Asian Cup and finally move out of the desert back to Europe. He has the quality, has exemption, and he should have made more than enough dough by now. He's still young and has plenty of time.

A new manager truly brings the worst out of BSK, me included.

Let's just be happy that this isn't another Stielike snafu. That much we can be certain of, even after just one game.

    See you guys next game.

Or perhaps KSY may have told Bento that he's planning to retire from the KNT in the next month or two? Gulp...

I've read a lot of comments on daum, naver, and other Korean forums, and there's rarely to say the least. The majority are delighted with the win but more importantly with how well we played, although they are holding judgement for the time being.

It may have been one game, but there's no saying that you can't be delighted or that you can't be talking positive about it, so all of the skeptical folks need to nip it in the bud.

After today’s Kirlo (Ki+Pirlo) performance, I certainly hope not. I don’t think he’d be called up to these friendlies if he planned to retire before the AC, right?
