What if Tite says no thanks and goes back to club football?

I know that. I was just giving an example of a hugely talented player who did not survive in the Brazil set up because of lack of performance. With repeated non-performance, the same thing would have happened to Messi (especially, if he also walked around on the pitch at the same time...he would be vilified). BTW, R10 was extremely dedicated in the season prior to the 2010 WC but was still dropped!

I doubt it but it would depend on the coach. Specially had he reached a WC final 4 years prior. Ignoring 40+ goals and 20+ assists in a top European league would be hard. But certainly he'd get criticized for his lack of movement. Scolari ignored Romario when he was knocking in goals in 2002 but it took something more personal to exclude him.

It didn't matter how hard R10 was training in 2010. He had his chances with Dunga and didn't show enough dedication. By 2009 Dunga had already figured out a system that and R10 didn't fit in it.

As you say, Brazilian coaches have ignored players like Romario and R10 even when they were performing very well at club level. I have no doubt that Messi would face the same treatment in Brazil. Brazilian's don't invent excuses for non-performance. On the contrary, they don't excuse non-performance. 40+ goals and 20+ assists is impressive but probably not that impressive when one sees far worse players such as Lewa, Cavani etc. doing similar things. The power difference between the top clubs and the rest across European leagues (and possibly elsewhere) imply that it is much easier to put up those numbers by players playing for these top clubs. The numbers need to be contrasted with numbers put up at the relatively more egalitarian international level. And these numbers wouldn't matter if there is continuous lack of performance at the international level. Brazilians don't have that much patience, and generally there are replacements. If Neymar continues to play they way he did in this WC (which was better than Messi but quite a bit lower than his usual standards), we will be the first ones asking for him to be benched (it wouldn't matter what he did in the past). In this respect, Brazilian fans are like Real Madrid fans I think. :D

His arm comes down before his body starts coming down though. I think it was reflex and I don't buy that he doesn't see the ball.

Sorry but you can't equate Messi's example to R10 nor Romario and I've explained why. They are completely different situations. One thing that could have happened is personality clash with a coach if indeed the rumor of Messi calling the shots are true. However, I could see Messi bowing down to a coach that showed he knew what he was doing. Just like Neymar would bow his head down to Zidane, but seemed to have no respect for Emery.

You're not going to find many players putting up those numbers in the top European leagues. And those that are, are starting for their NTs no questions asked.

Messi still boasts 65 goals and 40 assists for NT mind you.

We are probably going in circles, but yes, they are starting for other NTs; however, other NTs cannot be compared with Brazil. Also, Messi does have those numbers but in double the matches. Romario and Neymar's numbers (for example) are more impressive. That didn't stop Romario from being overlooked (for whatever reason). That doesn't stop Neymar being criticized every time he doesn't perform. My point is that if Messi played for Brazil, he would not be able to survive for so long based on his laurels at club level. He would need to perform and continue to perform. Brazilians would never hunt for excuses to justify his continued non-performance. That's the difference. I'm pretty sure that if Messi played for Brazil they way he did in this WC or in the majority of the knockout stages of the last WC, he would be out and Brazil would look elsewhere, starting afresh (more so, if there were upcoming talents like Dybala etc.).

He was drafted once iirc, most likely by Dunga.

Non-brazilian but crazy follower of Brasil football from childhood here.
    1) I don't understand why Tite needed to announce teams the night before the game. And there was the effort to find the best XI, but not any effort to match the opponent's XI. for example, against Belgium - with them playing Felliani in mid-field and de Brunye higher up, Brazil went with same team and not a stronger, physical mid-field.
Problems I saw was that not enough bench players were suited to come in and help tactical changes. So no surprises. I didnt get the planB or planC. Belgium had planB for the Japan game for sure.
    2) Mid-field was weak. Coutinho is the only passer but he is not a physical player. So it was always a problem of what is his best position. There was a surfeit of spolier mid fielders but little creativity.
Holding mid-field player is always at risk of yellow. Matuidi goes out and Tolisso comes in seamlessly. Or Nzonzi. there was no way to know that the tactically astute Fernandinho will not foul Lukaku and i think that was an aberration. But why carry other mid-fielders who never appeared suitable to come on ever - such as Fred?
    3) And why no Marquinhos at right back over Fagner against even Belgium? Pavard is a converted CB. I feel Marquinhos would have been much better than Fagner in that game. Fagner adjusted well in the 2nd half of Mexico but was in difficulty in 1st half.
    4) Neymar was 60-70%. Unfortunate that he has never peaked at a cup or got injured last time mid cup.

Looking ahead - GK is set for future.

Defense: This is the biggest area of weakness. TS and Miranda will have to be replaced. TS is one of my most favorite players despite his emotional weakness. Technically he is a masterpiece. Marquinhos and Alex Sandro should be good. How is Marlon shaping up? Are there good young defenders in Brasil or abroad? What about the wing backs? And please, not Fagner or Fagner-level players.
There needs to be 2nd and 3rd options for yellow card scenarios.

Mid-field - Casemiro will be there if form holds. How good is Arthur? Fabinho? Fred? Felipe Anderson? Any good deep passer like Jorginho (Italy)? Anyone similar to Thiago Alcantara (box to box)?

Forward - looks stacked. Jesus should get better. Vinicius? Neymar will be there. Willian possibly. Costa. Firmino. They better be in good goal scoring form though.

Finally, the cup will be in December. More time to gel as a team over summer and less exhausted players mid-season?

I think central defense, defensive midfield, and attack are not going to be an issue in the future. RWB is surely a concern as is creative MF. Arthur seems to be a great hope. But Paqueta is the guy that pushes Brazil over the line I think (and hope). Can't mess up this rare talent!

Well I have been says this for a while now we lack substitutes for 2010 and 2018. Crazy we went out in 2010 and 2018 on own goals by fernandinho and Melo.

Less than 1 year ago in a WCQ game at home France tied Luxembourg 0 x 0. 7 of the same starters who started the WC Final including Pogba, Mbappe, and Griezmann.

France won both of their WCs with their starting striker not scoring a single goal :ROFLMAO:

Giroud apparently didn't even have a shot on target.
