Greaseman what a diving douche he had already fallen over himself with his feet in the air. And his Loser dance at the Croatia crowd was classless.

That will be a memorable final.
6 goals total. 1 OG, 1 penalty, 1 GK mistake, 2 odd goals from outside of the box, 1 beautiful Perisic goal.

his arms weren't all out, it was fairly modest (his upper arm wasn't even sticking out iirc) and within the realm of what most players do with their arms when they're jumping. How many times do you see players go for headers with their arms stuck rigidly to their sides?

This is why I hate the handball rule. It's way too transparent and if you were to ask 100 referees, you'd get a mixed response, just like the responses we're seeing here. Football rules should change to where it becomes a yes/no issue, so refereeing becomes more consistent.

I'd prefer if the rules were changed to something like.

Deliberate handball (Suarez) = definite penalty
Unintentional handball (Perisic) = Direct free kick inside the box?

FIFA changed ruling where a deliberate attempt to win the ball in a goal scoring opportunity = yellow (to avoid triple jeopardy, just like what happened to Croatia vs Denmark last minute penalty). Maybe we can see a change to handball rule?

Oh well that’s it for another 4 years. Time to take a break from football.

Yeah, I’ll be still around here when the Asian Cup is on. In the meantime I’ll have other things to occupy my time ;)

Thank you for your support. I feel we need a set piece specialist in the NT staff, for the future. I don't like the fact that our good play from the 1. half wasn't rewarded, either. Or that a small country failed to get that WC star.
But, the players contributed to our tourism, to our economy (people spent money on fan items and beer because of the hype). They will get a welcome home worthy of champions. And the state will decorate them with medals. They are historically the most successful football national team in Croatia, and all of ex-Yugoslavia.

I'm just pissed I have to wait for 2 years to see them have a crack at another big cup.

You can be proud of your team. Croatia was really unlucky in the first half and could have deserved a way better outcome. They showed an amazing fighting spirit during this WC, they were enjoyable to watch. I remember, I said to a friend prior to the WC to take seriously Croatia, I am glad they proved me right. I am delighted France has shared this final with Croatia, it was an amazing match like any other.

I am happy a Frenchman shows appreciation for our effort. I suppose it wasn't meant to be for us- fatigue, and unaddressed set piece issues are a big enough difference-maker.
I will be a bit mean though: you, as the champions, get to enjoy the champion's curse on the next WC. I wouldn't mind Korea putting you out early.:D

as far as the handball ruling goes. it's completely normal and understandable that opinion here seems split 50/50. on paper if it's seen clear (contact) it's often called without a doubt and without VAR.

however, CAN coverage of the World Cup featured Howard Webb who has officiated many a WC match including a WC Final, and for what it's worth, he thought this was a perfect eg. of a teaching moment for the next generation of refs. long story short, he thought the handball was harsh and would have been fine w/o a VAR intervention and thinks this is where we should be headed in the future. the natural movement of the human body when jumping is to have your arms out to help leverage oneself. the player did not intentionally play the ball and thus should not have been penalized. it was not clear and cut (in this instance for VAR to have stopped play). he thought if and when consulted, this is clearly an instance where VAR can help with the deeply subjective nature and interpretation of the handball ruling and hopes proper use of VAR can help us have a clearer objective for football re: the handball rule going forward.

I think the best solution in that particular handball today was to give a free kick on the edge of the box. I just feel iffy about giving penalties to "soft" handballs in a situation that most likely wouldn't have led to a clear goal scoring opportunity anyway.

Going to VAR itself was fine imo - it's now just a question of the rules and the decision.

You make yourself bigger you get a handball. It’s not natural to defend with your arms as if tied behind your back but it’s what you do when defending a cross. Had ball fallen and someone kicked the ball into a jumping defender in exact same way, stone cold PK. The gray area was how poorly both players judged the ball but yes defenders do guide messy balls out with chest all the time with arms back.

Looks even clearer from that angle.

We’d argue over deliberateness just as we do intent. And we give PKs for any foul even if it isn’t. a clear scoring opportunity.

If we changed the rules to make it less hazardous in accident we’d see defenders splayed all over the place with limbs akimbo which is far worse IMO than having defenders err by keeping arms by their side even if unnatural.
