The Professor Who Helped Make Belgium Soccer a World Power After an embarrassing flameout in Euro 2000, fundamental changes made by a group of academics, a technical director and football association changed the direction of the country’s program https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-pr...gium-soccer-a-world-power-1531154100?mod=e2fb Brazil needs to revamp it system and starting with the States championship.
It does when you realize CAP made the same choices in 2006 when he played Cafu instead of Cicinho and imo, Ronaldo instead of a Robinho paired with Adriano.
Interesting. I saw him play during the Olympics and thought he was one to watch going forward. I definitely thought him to be amongst the best Olympic Selecao players along with Marquinhos, Renato Augusto and Neymar. Admittedly, I have not followed him since....but didn't he just get voted South American player of the year and help win Libertadores for Gremio? Supposedly Lazio and Liverpool are monitoring him. Perhaps he makes the jump.
yes, and what happened when Parreira needed those guys the most against France? he benched Adriano for Robinho, and later in that game he subbed Cafu for Cicinho as well . Hirerarchy be damned. Again, it doesn't make sense that he would risk losing a WC final not fielding his best player because of some dumbass "hierarchy". that would be borderline mental illness. He would also be essentially slandering Ronaldo by saying he "afinou" in 94. I don't like CAP as a coach, but if that wasn't true he'd have come up with a different excuse, something along the lines of Viola being more experienced playing decisive games for Corinthians or something like that.
Difference is CAP wasn't losing and he probably felt Ronaldo was too young for the pk round had it ever needed to go to him.
06 was a maelstrom of bad decisions. R10, R9, Adriano we’re all way out of shape and he fielded a 4-2-2-2 with R9 and Adriano up front and Ronaldinho walking behind them. There was no width in the side and Kaka had to make up for the front 4’s lack of pressing
Viola was terrible at penalty kicks. That's why Dunga and even f@ing Marcio Santos and were selected over him in that shootout. At the time Corinthians tried to make him their official PK taker and he kept missing them so everyone knew this. Having him play the overtime doesn't make sense unless he really was doing great as reported in training. judging from how well he played those 15 minutes, he was.
I said this a few pages ago, the hand he was dealt in 06 was good for a 4-2-3-1 system . R10 and Robinho on the sides, Kaka as AMC, R9 or Adriano as striker. Brazilian coaches are incapable of figuring out shit for themselves and only copy whatever europeans come up with . So he kept hammering that square peg in a round hole. When the quadrado magico failed he returned to the 4-1-2-1-2 system with Juninho and Ze Roberto which didn't work during qualifiers.
The quadrado mágico was the opposite of copying Europeans lol, if anything we should have copied what Italy was fielding at the time. And yeah Adriano or Ronaldo should have been on the bench, probably Ronaldo as Adriano’s athleticism in the second half would have been too much for tired defenses. The centerbacks and Zé Roberto were the only redeeming parts of the 06 team
I liked the Belgian tactics against Brazil, something like 3-4-2-1. Fellaini eliminated Neymar like Gentile Zico at the World Cup 1982. The Belgians have the best goalkeeper, a playmaker ( de Bruyne ), Nr. 10 ( Eden Hazard ) and Nr. 9 ( Lukaku ) at this World Cup. The worst tactics at WC 2018 had Argentina. It was something like a Birthday present for Messi. The main thing was Messi must be satistisfied and happy. Not the team.
There is an element of stubbornness with our coaches that is mind boggling at times. I remember Luis Fabiano killing it in Europe one year and Dunga ignored him for Vagner Love, lo and behold an injury happens and Fabiano gets called up and literally saves Dunga job against Uruguay. Even, Tite feel victim to it with his patience with Gabriel Jesus.
Luan is my favorite player since I saw him play live against Korea at the Toulon youth tournament some years back. Also, at the Rio Olympics it was the inclusion of Luan (mainly in the second round) that made the difference. Many people here would claim that it was Neymar, or Weverton or someone else responsible for that Gold medal, but I insist that it was Luan that made that Olympic team function. Gremio won the last edition of the Copa Libertadores, yes as a team, but the two main drivers of that victory were Arthur and Luan. If Tite cannot figure out how to incorporate Luan into the national team set-up then, well, that says something about Tite as a coach, does it not?
Right. And I have put forth some criticism of Tite here, that he was out-coached by Roberto Martinez. Surely something could have been done by a better, more aware, quicker thinking coach? Yes, Fellaini rubbed-out Neymar but that situation could have been overcome by some smart moves by Neymar and by his coach Tite. You, me and Tite know that, unlike in tennis, in football on the field coaching is allowed.
I don't know. Something doesn't impress me about him the few times I've watched him play. Seems to me like a player that when given space can do some neat passes and score some goals but could be easily neutralized.
I'd think if he was that good, he'd already be in Europe somewhere. He is 25. What's the story there ?
Surely it's not all about Europe, right? Yes, I know, Europe owns football, what with all the money, the teams and they win all the championships, but still there are limits. I mean Gremio, my favorite team, is the undisputed best team in all South America. That counts for something, no? And yes Luan has not played in Europe, but so what? I'm sure there have been offers from some god-forsaken, third world sh*t hole in Eastern Europe, but Luan and Gremio have correctly turned those offers down. I've heard rumors about Liverpool after they sold Coutinho, but nothing has come out of that. As for Brazil, well, again we have the Olympics. There is an argument, just an argument, that Luan was the best player of that tournament. I have all the Brazil games from Rio on DVR and what a difference between the games with/without Luan. If Tite and his team could not see greatness when it was looking them in the face, then there's nothing I can say about that.
South America vs Europe: How did it all go wrong for Brazil, Argentina and Co? For only the fifth time in World Cup history, there will be no South American team in the final four. https://scroll.in/field/885872/sout...d-it-all-go-wrong-for-brazil-argentina-and-co
F*ck it man. Wasn't one of the reasons why Arthur was excluded from the team because he was coming back from an injury. I'm beginning to feel some anger toward Tite.
Apparently being injured wasn't really a problem for being called up. Honestly, when Tite had a chance to test Arthur in friendlies last year, he was indeed injured if I remember correctly. It seems like Arthur has a bright future, but we don't really know how he would have fared. He is still young. He only busted onto the scene last year. Just needed some more time.
Luan did great in Rio but the Olympics is an under-23 competition not the best evaluation of a player. Another thing is where does Luan even play? He’s best position is probably as an attacking mid and he wouldn’t start over Coutinho in that position. He can also play wide but the options wide are superior as well.
Tite's decision making when it came to picking injuries or fresh from injury players was suspect from the beginning. This is nothing new or surprising. Had we won, no one would have said anything. But we lost so every stupid decision by Tite is being analyzed now including taking several injured or coming from injury players.
