It is very strange. Historically it would only make sense for England and Germany to be allies as both consider France to be their biggest enemy.
I mean, can you blame for folks thinking of the nazis when they want to talk shit to us? Especially with how successful we've been on the pitch & how well our country has not just been doing economically but also culturally? Where we stand as a multi-cultural example at a time of elevated xenophobia? It was an utterly despicable era in our history that played a big part in who we are as a nation now and also who we were as a people that made it even possible. We're not all nazis now & we're more vehement in defending against that kind of idiology than many western nations, but that kind of historical blackmark isn't washed away so easily...unless you're the USA.
Yeah, I know. I hated that BMG bought him instead of Soyuncu last summer, but he had a great year and reminded everyone of why he was so highly rated before his disastrous BVB-stint.
both Ginter and Toljan are good examples of young guys who moved to Dortmund too early. wasn't a fan of his in his Dortmund days. But did well at the CC and has done an admirable job at Gladbach, although I don't think he had a good start but got better with time.
I still hate Ginter...mostly because he's keeping Elvedi from playing next to Vestegaard...but he was solid this year. I still don't trust him with the NT, but I don't trust Rüdiger either. Neither would've made my final 23 over Vogt & Tah.
As some one who has spent some time in both the UK (In and around London) and Germany ( in NRWF), my experiences/observations of what the English think of Germany or German football do not match with what I read here on BS. While the contemporary English fan may not like the German national team, there is a bregrudging sesne of respect. After that September night in Munich, I did read a few tabloids making unnecessary war references. But a tabloids business model is to sell by catching eyeballs with flashy headlines, and they hardly represent what people at large think. I think people here fret too much about what the English yellow media/tv experts think about German football. Most English people do not take the former seriously. My experience in Germany shows that England is hardly considered a rival by most. The sense of rivalry, if any, is only one way. The games with Holland, Italy and Turkey get people a lot more agitated for different reasons.
Holland is a dead rivalry, they haven't been relevant since 2010. They seem to be picking up in terms of youth dev so they could rise back in a few years.
I will never not enjoy beating the Dutch, no matter how low they sink. Even though I have some distant Dutch roots, had fun when I visited Amsterdam, & love the color orange lol
Yes, if you're the USA you get to build statues of people who committed treason and promoted slavery.
Not relevant since 2010? They were a couple of penalty kicks away from being in the World Cup Final in 2014.
they were dreadful in 2014, Robben dived vs Mexico to get a winning PK, in the 90+4 minute. Then scored 0 goals in the QF and SF which both games went to shootouts. their only impressive game was trashing Spain and that's it. and following this WC they failed to make EC16 and WC18. They were on the downwards.
Dreadful? They won all their group games, and the Mexico match was played in the jungle at midday in about 40 degrees with 95% humidity. The same place (Fortaleza) that Germany couldn't beat Ghana. If a team that finishes 3rd in the World Cup isn't relevant, then I wonder who is?
And then get mad when people suggest that traitors who went to war over slavery shouldn't have statues glorifying them...never mind that manifest destiny was the hunt for lebensraum only all religion-y, genocidal total-war campaigns launched against the indigenous populations and all; then there were the Japanese internment camps; the decades of extra-judicial killings across the globe; the systemic destabilization of latin american, especially in the early days of the empire but through the cold war as well; the ongoing murder of middle eastern children (aka collateral damage) by the thousand...oh and the Jim Crow laws that our ********ed up forebearers studied when we decided to get really effective at destroying minorities. But w/e, at least soon america will be great "again"... *sigh* sorry to our american posters for that rant, I do actually love your country & many of your people. I mean, there's reasons I continue to live here...despite you lot trying to take my green card away because of the plant that smoke...other than the love of my life being an american and her having given up on learning german. Instead having opted to learn russian to communicate with my relatives...and there's no way I'm putting her black ass through living in russia; even if that country wasn't ********ed up. But god damn are some of you just infuritatingly ignorant about your own complicated history & the actions of your empire in the world today.
what does the hot weather have to do with Robben cheating to win the game? if they are so relevant than where have they been in the last 4 years, no EC16, no WC18, GS exit in EC12. They also played like crap in WC14. Yeah they won their group but then were terrible in all the games that mattered. if you think otherwise that's your opinion which I don't share.
They were relevant until 2014, that was their last hooray, not 2010. Robben cheating to get them to the SF or no, they were still relevant and had some really strong games at that tourney as well. ...but even if they've fallen off since 2014, I still care more about beating them & Italy than I do anyone else *shrug*
the Dutch in 2014 were just as bad as Germany 2002. And we also had issues in that period from post 1996-2006. Only difference is that even though we sucked in that period we still made tournaments. you'll have your chance as we are in the same group in the UEFA Nations League in the Fall along with France.
Well, you're changing your story,, because you said "not relevant since 2010". Clearly they were relevant in 2014, it is nonsense to say otherwise. Anyway, this isn't my board, so I'll just creep back into the shadows.
The Dutch in 2014 played better football than they did in 2010...the mexico match not withstanding...Robben played like an absolute superstar, and they came 1 match shy of getting just as far How were they relevant in 2010 but not in 2014?
