#usmnt vs IRE: Hamid; Yedlin, Carter-Vickers, Miazga, Villafaña; Trapp (capt.); Weah, Adams, McKennie, Rubin; Wood— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) June 2, 2018
How much of this are we going to miss due to the college baseball game on ESPN2? Apparently there's a storm heading towards the field, so a rain delay is possible
Bench: Steffen, Parker, Robinson, Moore, Lichaj, de la Torre, Corona, Sargent, Novakovich Midfielders Julian Green (right foot injury) and Kenny Saief (right knee injury) were held out of tonight’s squad due to injury. Midfielder Keaton Parks, defender Erik Palmer-Brown and goalkeeper William Yarbrough also will not dress for the match. https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/2018/06/02/17/16/20180602-news-mnt-vs-ireland-lineup-notes
About what I expected as a starting 11...same 4-1-4-1 that is a little more veteran heavy, but rewards a couple of the standout young starters from the Bolivia game (Weah and Rubin).
Ireland's XI BREAKING: Graham Burke starts for Ireland 🇮🇪 with John O'Shea captaining the side as Martin O'Neill names his team to face USA 🇺🇸! #COYBIG #IRLUSA pic.twitter.com/gCppJFzmKD— Ireland Football ⚽️🇮🇪 (@IrelandFootball) June 2, 2018 This will be John O'Shea's last game for Ireland
This game will not be an exhibition of 'joga bonita' - although I don't know whether to predict an end-to-end game that bypasses the midfield entirely, or one where neither team commits numbers forward and is just a series of turnovers far away from either goal... either way, I don't think the possession stat will be very meaningful today.
I'm excited to see Weah and Yedlin on the right, and I always love watching McKennie. I like Bobby Wood, but given that he's a known commodity, it's a friendly with no consequences, and he's just finished a long and grueling season, I really don't understand why you wouldn't start Josh Sargent. Let's see what he can do against some decent competition! At the very least, I hope they pull Wood at halftime and let Sargent play the second.
Robinson was the MOTM against Bolivia IMO. I'd rather have him over Villfana, though if Villa only gets one game in a 3 game camp, I guess I can live with it
Didn't Shredder pretty much nail it, only paint his insider info as his own preference? Interesting to go with Hamid again when he got clubbed to death to the tune of 4 goals in Ireland in one of his few caps. People should stop throwing tantrums about having a few vets in the lineup. It's natural and this amount isn't overdone, especially on the road against a strong side. Gives the prospects out there more of a chance to shine. Doubt Villa starts v. Francois. We can just contest the choices of prospects. I wanted to see Steffen, EPB (6), maybe Adams at rb, Parks, Novakovich up top, Saief instead of Rubin, etc. Not how I'd have played it but don't hate it.
I worry it's a set up by the GOB for the media sob sisters to start mewling and puking about the need for the old guard back. Next up in September is Brazil and Argentina.
I do not understand Parks not dressing while we have 2 right backs on the bench and LDLT dressing in the midfield.
Only problem I have is I’d start Robinson over Villafana.... I’d probably would have started Sargent too but that’s alright.
Florida State and Mississippi State have just gone to a rain delay in the 8th inning. We may have to start this on UniMas
ESPN News or U they usually transfer it over to. Highly doubt there will be a delay since it's in Ireland and they don't give a buck about our tv viewership.
I don't have a problem with Rubin getting minutes. I thought he showed flashes last game. Our central midfield looks a little too defensive, but I think Rubin and Weah can help create chances. Looking at that Ireland lineup, I feel like we should have a good chance at a result, but it's a home game for them and our lineup is not the most experienced.
Is Ireland a strong side? Is this Ireland roster, which I think is at B-team level, really something that we can't expect our youth to compete against? Stronger than Bolivia, sure, but "strong"? I would've thought the gameplan would've been; start all the young guys against Bolivia and Ireland, teams that you know they can compete with, and sprinkle in a couple veterans against France to keep the team organized and competent against an extremely good opponent.
