SKY SOURCES: Wayne Rooney’s £12m move from Everton to MLS club DC United agreed in principle. #SSN pic.twitter.com/3zeWesvIBi— Sky Sports News (@SkySportsNews) May 10, 2018 Someone gotta come get DC. How the hell they got 12 mil laying around and this is what they do. Plus, why did they spend it on the transfer of a player who will never have value after this contract. I understand 12 mil in salary more than 12 mil on transfer.
MLS player salaries are up. https://mlsplayers.org/resources/salary-guide http://www.philly.com/philly/sports...ladelphia-union-roster-may-2018-20180510.html
I will say though. I was not expecting the Rapids to be so far up the list. Also, Dempsey took a pretty hefty paycut this off season. He's down to $1.6 million from $3.9 million last season. Lodeiro at $2.3 million seems like a steal considering how important he is to the Sounders offense.
Three tweets that sum it up. I don't follow soccer. I know who Wayne Rooney is. I am more likely to go to a DC United game if he's on the team. That is why they signed him.— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) May 10, 2018 I talk about relevant sports people want to hear talked about.— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) May 10, 2018 I have been told many times over the years that I should talk and tweet more about DC United. I did so this morning and a bunch of people are yelling at me. Good reminder as to why I normally don't.— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) May 10, 2018 Even Kornheiser's podcast talked about Rooney and DCU. They talk more about the Washington Kastles than they do DCU. I understand getting Rooney, I don't understand the price.
Rooney in my opinion has always been overrated--a product of nonstop EPL marketing hype and local boy does good vibes. Is he a good player? yes. Does he make DCU better? arguably the answer is yes. Is he a game breaker? no. Will he put DCU on his shoulders and take them to the next level? doubtful. But he brings name recognition and the opportunity for DCU to cash in on a recognized EPL star.
You know I have a special level of disdain for DC sports radio and local news sports media in general, @Gamecock14. I still maintain it is the worst in the country. GP is everything that is wrong with it. He knew nothing about hockey for years. He would talk down on it. Then Uncle Teddy started sending him a check and now he's somehow on NBCSN Washington post-game shows where nobody wants to see him or hear his nasally voice after a Caps game. Most of the hosts on 106.7 are thin-skinned assholes who are limited to knowledge of one sport if they have any sports knowledge. I'm a sports fan. I desperately want to be able to appreciate local sports radio. I can't. Mix in some MAGA and it's unbelievable some of that shit is still on the air in this market. I had forgotten I've been blocked by him for years. 32 ain' young. It's all about ticket sales and an attention boost.
My first thought was that they had the wrong New York team in the URL, and hence the title. You go, Jesse Marsch.
DC United needs a team spirit reboot in the worst way. If Rooney has the right attitude and plays through the 2020 season, and they bring in a new coach, he can set the franchise up for several years of improved “heart,” for want of a better word. Still, a steep friggin’ price. Unless their local TV deal gets jacked up, it seems a stretch.
When Dan Snyder owns the ESPN radio station and CSN/MASN form relationships with people at the other station, nothing good comes out. I appreciated Kornheiser in that he went as close as possible to criticizing management without getting pulled.
Rooney will be given a contract until the end of the 2020 MLS season worth £300,000 a week, but the Sun reports that Everton will have to subsidize the move by contributing £50,000 to the pot. Not sure if I'm doing this correct, but 300,000 pounds = $405,000 x 52 = $21,000,000. Is this correct?
From what I understand Man United is still paying a major portion of his salary and it is assumed they will continue to do so while he is in DC.
Sounders move the start time/date for 3 games: https://www.sounderatheart.com/2018/5/10/17342492/sounders-moving-three-kickoff-times May 26 vs RSL moves to 2pm so people can watch the UCL. Sept 19 vs Philly moves back to 8pm to avoid rush hour a bit more Oct 6 vs Houston moves to Oct 8 to move the game from a day before a Seahawks game to the day after. This should allow them to avoid having football lines on the field.
I can second all of this living and working around the DC area for 20+ years. That's why I have satellite radio... thank goodness!! (notice I'm not giving Sirius/XM a free plug here and just mention "satellite" radio)
Sirius is the way to go much like cable you can negotiate a price wants you've signed up originally that's what I do anyway. It works.
