Lest I'm mistaken Arsenal's roster is more expensive than Liverpool's, and is definitely more expensive than Tottenham's. Pretty sure it's more expensive than Juventus and Roma.

At the very least they've been under performing in the premiership compared to the price tag for their roster.

Is that purchase price or contract price? Because for years Wenger has given ridiculously large contracts to royally undeserving players.

And cheating on his wife, etc. I don't get the comments about him being a great man at all. He wasn't a terrible guy but he is no way great to me.

with all due respect, it's not a manager's job to put the club's interests over his own livelihood, is it? the obvious conflict of interests make the manager, himself, the very least qualified person to weigh that particular equasion. it's the board's responsibility to put the club above the manager, simple as.

was every other manager who ever got the sack being 'selfish', as well?

As I said, history nerd. Plus, I have relatives in Frederick, which isn't far from Harper's Ferry.

Personally don’t think it’s extreme considering what he fought against.

apologies in advance for trotting out the 'kids these days' implication. but would not most people posting in this forum - or most any American forum - not know who that is?

No way. Educated people might know who John Brown is, but if they haven't studied the abolitionist movement in detail, they wouldn't know what he looks like.

I'm talking more about "Bloody Kansas" than Harper's Ferry. Yes, he was fighting against slavery, but there was some pretty nasty stuff all around during those border wars.

Sadly, no. I taught history at a university here in the states. You would be shocked at the ignorance of Americans in regards to their own history.

It is partly to blame why so many are so damn gullible these days regarding conspiracy theories and issues dealing with the constitution and American forefathers. They know nothing about history nor how their own government works so they cannot discern fact and historical fact/precedence from falsehoods and fear mongering It’s infuriating.

To be fair we're also trying to both improve upon the standard of history taught and include a LOT more information than, say, our grandparents might have been taught. We understand there's so much more than simply Columbus, Washington, etc, but there is a rational limit to what most people can retain.

Building on your last point, though, we've also regrettably run aground with our new technology, because while it enables everyone to have access to tons of information it also clouds our ability to manage it and discern fact from folly. In giving everyone more of a voice we've equally provide bullhorns for the idiots. Alas.

I stayed away for a couple of days because I knew there would be a lot of strum and drang over this loss. Atletico have made their home field a fortress, they held Real 0-0, the Barcelona game ended 1-1. In 17 home games in La Liga they have surrender a grand total of 4 goals. It was always going to be very difficult to score in this one. The tie was lost when Arsenal failed to score a second or third in the first leg. Atletico knows how to defend as a team, Simeone is the Argentine, Mourinho. Effective, but not a playing style I'm particularly fond of.

yeah, very poor phrasing on my part. I am well aware that all too many are oblivious to things far more fundamental, and that recognition of said image would be an unrealistic expectation for many and probably most.

what I was mildly surprised by was the implication that recognition might be considered exceptional - surprising even. I'd've put $100 on Yoss recognizing that image ... but without the slightest thought of him being - or attributing it to being - a history nerd.
