He is IMO, wouldn't mind dropping a hundo on him.

What a sad, sad day. Like man, we dominated and still fcuk it up which is hilarious. It's the most emblematic Wenger performance ever. What a fitting end

I used to think a new coach might fix our defensive issues but now I can’t wait for someone to cut these clowns and bring in all new defenders.

Atletico haven't allowed a goal at home since January, and only two teams have scored more than once there all season.

The good news is that Chelsea scored twice to win there, but that's the silver lining to a very dark cloud.

Couldn't have played much better up a man for 80 minutes at home? And they only scored once? ******** outta here.

They also played 37 crosses against a packed in defense. Didn't realize Moyes took over.

We created a ton of chances. 28 shots, xG of close to four, hit the post once, and their keeper made some surreal saves. Created good chances when it was 11v11 too.

We tore these guys to shreds and were unfortunate. Play like this next week and chances are we go through (unlikely as that may be).

I dunno, exigent circumstances. Yes, we came out roaring against their full 11 but I fully expected them to exploit that if they had a full 11 later in the match. We didn't have the same energy for most of the second half.

If we play like this, against a full 11 away from home with Diego Costa, then yes we have a decent chance. But their strategy will be very different and we are absolutely trash away from home this year, for whatever reason. I say we are 70% chance of crashing out

This one hurts. Sometimes you get the process almost entirely correct and the result blows.

I'd say closer to 80% chance of going out, but frankly, I'd be thrilled with a 1 in 5 chance of winning in Madrid.

If your surprised by any of this you must believe in unicorns. Ain’t no way we win away against 11 with Costa. Atletico is a good side and we aren’t. Remember, Danny Wellbeck starts for us. Onward . Bye bye Arsene. Perhaps before I die the old Arsenal will rise again to glory.

Sure we played "well" but only in terms of secondary stats. When the only stat that ultimately matters is sticking the ball in the net more than the other team.

All I can say as throughout this match I did not have the overwhelming feeling of "we're playing great", "this is great", "this is going to work out well".

Instead it felt like torture. A team that has 75% possession, outshoots the opponent by 28-6, but except for one moment, cannot for the life of them buy a goal. For me, the words that describe our play tonight would be "excruiciating", and "impotent".

And as such it was much too classic an Arsenal performance from the last 5-10 years or so.

One more thing that I was thinking during the match and more on the way home...

Not only did we miss Giroud tonight, and Mkhi, but we also missed Sanchez.

He's the kind of player who would grow extremely impatient and try to take the game by the scruff of it's neck and make something happen. He would make direct, dangerous runs into the box... something we woefully lacked tonight. And my recollection is that before he left he was one of most effective goal-scorers. Instead tonight we had 2 shots each from distance by Xhaka & Ozil... and we knew how well those would work out.

I'm not saying Sanchez would've definitely won the game for us, but in this type of game where we're struggling to break down organized defensive teams, and our crossing-from-wide strategy wasn't paying off, Sanchez's style would've helped a lot.

We spent three freaking years ranting about how Alexis never ran into the box and chased the ball around like a dog.

We did miss Mkhi today. But this game was more about Oblak being an interdimensional Jedi Octopus than anything else.

How did it take less than three months to forget that Sanchez did all of the exact opposite stuff of what you just said?

Regardless Atleti absolutely packed the box so there was no space whatsoever for runs. Our strategy was mostly right

    This.

    OFF TOPIC RANT ON

We focus far, far, far too much in our society about results and not the process that leads to those results. That's a sign of a society that's sick. It's important to get the process right, and it's typically far more important than the outcome. Why? Because a certain element of randomness can show up in one-off events. Like a ball bouncing off of a defenders face and then off of a goal keeper to give a guy an open goal. Long-term outcomes tend to be more successful when you get the process right. Do the right things, in the right way, and outcomes will be positive more often than not.

Only really happened four times this season, by my count: Stoke (refs), Watford (refs), Man United (lol), and today (yes, a 1-1 result at home in a two leg European tie is a defeat).

Most of our losses have been abject sh*tshows.

Welbeck was so frustrating on the left. Constantly turning back inside on his right foot instead of getting a cross in.

We dominated before the red, as well, and Atletico are a great defensive team. A combination of tremendous organization, Oblak being Oblak, and a Koscielny error prevented this from being 4- or 5-nil.

So yeah, terrible result, but great performance. It happens sometimes.
