With partial credit to @Testudo, who helped out on the Detective Work Thread -- looks like we never got around to starting a thread for him. I happened to see him listed as a German U18, so figured now was a good time:

    http://datencenter.dfb.de/profil/356526?historize_title=U+18-Nationalmannschaft&historize_url=http://www.dfb.de/u-18-junioren/team-und-trainer/?no_cache=1

(That page doesn't note American citizenship, though the DFB sometimes puts two flags next to a name.)

    He's a '99 in Union Berlin's youth setup.

    https://www.fc-union-berlin.de/nachwuchs/u19/

Here's a FB page that notes an American passport:

    https://www.facebook.com/pg/Lennard-Maloney-526713944104954/about/?tab=page_info

I also had previously found what appeared to be an Instagram page with an American flag on it, but which I can't currently find.

This guy played most of the last season with the reserve squad, even though he would've been one of the youngest players on the U-19 squad, and he got a lot of minutes. The season before he was the captain of the U-17's.

He's a '99 CB, definitely one of the weakest spots on our next U-20 team. Whoever is the next U-20 coach (or if Tab stays on), they should call this kid in.

Also he's gotten two German U-18 appearances in the last few months, just in case anyone was wondering.

I think you've misread the FuPa page, which says he played in the Regionalliga Nordost. However, it is referring to a U-19 Regionalliga, the tier below the three regional U19 Bundesligas. According to FuPa, Union Berlin U19 won the league and will play in the U19 Bundesliga Nord/Nordost this coming season.

Union Berlin stopped fielding a reserve team a few years ago.

You might be right, the word "Regionalliga" must've thrown me off. Doesn't it usually say A-Junioren when its U-19?

Either way, he does seem to be a pretty good player.

I think that's what the (A) in "RL Nordost(A)" stands for.

In any case, if you click on the stat line for the league in question, a game-by-game stat line opens up. It states the league title more clearly and from the list of games you can verify that the league in question doesn't match up with the clubs in the (senior) Regionalliga.

Maloney started in Union Berlin U19's opener, a 4-1 loss to RB Leipzig.

Maloney has been captaining the team through the first four games. He started two at CB and the next two at RB. Union have lost all four.

That standby list is where we want players to be lol. Good enough to be recognized, but not good enough to be cap-tied.

I think you got it wrong, he started the game and played 77 minutes before he was subbed off for Hartel.

@bshredder posted this over in the Youth Yanks Abroad YNT forum:

"I can confirm Lennard is American and holds both German and USA passports. He was born in Berlin but his father is an American from Florida."

just to give an update he was in the initial final squad for the friendly.

Then for some reason, the list was changed later on and he was neither in the final squad nor on the back up one. And some players that were neither on the back up list nor main list, made the final squad.

Believe overall between "on call" and "out of nowhere" guys, there were 4 changes made from the initial main squad.

could it be because an injury/knock, that made him unfit for the game only? As he doesn't seem currently injured. Or was he dropped? Or did he end up refusing the call up because a switch is imminent?

if he was dropped and then the US come knocking, could make him closer to switching.

He doesn’t need to file a switch to play for the United States. He’s only played for them in friendlies

I think he’ll be at the next US U-20 camp - if Union Berlin let him miss their final game

I know he doesn't need to file a one time switch. When I said, switch I meant, change NTs.

although, career wise he's better off not accepting the US U20 camp. He's only made 1 2BL appearances, if Union end up not making any playoff which is increasingly likely than that last game could be another chance to start. It's better for him to get himself established at club level for next season.
