Benfica's opening AFC Cup match will be played at Macau Stadium according to TDM. Previously, the location of the match was in doubt as the M.U.S.T. stadium is still recovering from Hato and the Macau Stadium was booked for the annual Macau interscholastic track meet. An agreement in principle seems to have been reached to postpone the track meet to 9 March so that Benfica can play, as scheduled, on the 7th.

Benfica de Macau wins 9:0 against Macau Customs on Friday night, just before their first ever AFC Cup group match on Wednesday. The club is certainly on great form right now in the local scene.

FOOTBALL | PARTICIPATION IN AFC CUP A ‘UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY’ FOR BENFICA MACAU

Football club Benfica de Macau is ready to participate in the Asia Football Confederation (AFC) Cup 2018 group stage. Several Benfica representatives have acknowledged this opportunity as “unique” with team coach Bernardo Tavares saying, “we are going to try to do our best since this is a unique opportunity for Benfica de Macau and for Macau’s football [in general].”

Tavares was launching the match, scheduled for today, at the pre-match press conference held yesterday afternoon at the Macau Stadium. In the coach’s opinion, “the fact that we play the Taiwan team in the first home match can be an extra motivation, since theoretically it is the easier team [from the group].” Tavares went on to promise that Benfica will be “a fierce team and a team that will fight for the 3 points [match win].”

In response to the reports that Benefica is the favorite to win, Tavares said the fact that Benfica has already completed six championship matches this season in comparison to the opponents, whose championship has not started yet, might play in favor of the Macau team. However, he went on to add that, “the fact they haven’t yet started the championship also provides a surprise factor, as we [don’t have a] chance to access data and video to study the team. Our only footage of an official match from the Taiwan team goes back to last season’s final match in November.”

Benfica’s president, Duarte Alves, said that “this participation is an all new chapter in the history of Macau football,” adding, “I hope these six matches […]can give a good image of football in Macau and that [that will] further motivate the population and the press to follow the ‘King of the Sports’ in the MSAR and obviously to get a wider exposure from the club and from our sponsors that grant the chance for us to [play] here.”

Alves also hopes that other local teams will learn and be motivated to believe that it is possible to play at this level and to host these kinds of games in Macau. The president believes the example will spur local teams on to work harder individually and collectively “elevat[ing] the level of football in Macau.”

On the side of Hang Yuen FC, the coach Hung Chin-Hwai hopes that it will be a very competitive match, remarking that there are no favorites; “It’s 50-50,” Hung said. Still, he hopes to win the match and to give victory to the club but also to Taiwan, as he feels the responsibility of being the first Taiwanese team playing in the AFC Cup competition.

A Haitian player of Hang Yuen FC, Jean-Marc Alexandre, said “the team is prepared, we have been physically prepared for the match by the coach and team staff, we are now only missing the mental part which is the game itself to be played […] I can say that everyone is really excited for the game and to show everyone what we can do.”

To prepare the team for the match against Benfica, coach Hung noted that they have been doing “video analysis, and [could observe] that Benfica plays strong football but my team is good in pressing and movement so I expect a good match.”

Remarking on the group teams and upon which teams he believes to be stronger sides, Hung noted, “Probably [North Korea’s] 4.25 SC team, as they are the most experienced team and have several players playing in their national team.”

They came from behind to do it too which to me is the most impressive part. I'm happy to see them nick it at the end.

Benfica de Macau will next travel to North Korea to play 4.25 Sports Club next week. It will be a daunting task. Fortunately there are no Macau league matches this weekend and they can have a good rest. There is no update on the condition of Nikki Torrao though, who was stretchered off at half time.

FOOTBALL | BENFICA MACAU TO HAVE A ‘HARD TIME’ ON TRIP TO NORTH KOREA

Leonel Triesto attempts to score a goal against the Taiwanese side

After the historic victory against Taiwan’s Hang Yuen FC on Wednesday evening, it is already time for Benfica de Macau to focus on next week’s Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup match, to be held in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

Benfica became the first local club to participate and win its debut match in the group stage of the AFC Cup, an annual competition between Asian national clubs. But there is another challenge ahead.

Benfica’s coach, Bernando Tavares, says it will be hard to set up a squad for the match in Pyongyang, given that some local players are not professional.

“We know that will be very difficult. I don’t even know who the players are that I can count with [count on to be available],” Tavares said during the press conference. Many of the players need to take leave from work in order to represent the local team at next week’s match against North Korean side Hwaebul SC.

Questioned by the Times in the post-match press conference, Tavares said, “I don’t know yet which players will be available, we need to gather the troops and see who can get authorization to skip work and then set up a strategy and pack our bags on our way to [North] Korea,” further adding, “We know that for us it is much easier to play at home than away but that can work as an added motivation for our team.”

Tavares mentioned that in the upcoming match, Benfica will face a “quite different team when compared to the Taiwan [Hang Yuen FC] team, very strong physically,” but noted, “What I know is that if we managed to turn 0-2 to 3-2 [tonight] you must also believe in this team because I believe. The opponents might be strong but they don’t have our will to win.”

Another issue Tavares is aware of in the lead-up to the North Korea match was the fact, “we have very little access to videos of the team,” he said, noting that it is “[nearly] impossible to find records of the games of Hwaebul SC.” He added it will be very hard to know what to expect from the North Korean team.

That was a great comeback by Benfica de Macau. I think the two North Korean teams will be a huge challenge for them but we'll see if they can handle it.

Benfica could only travel today from Macau to North Korea via Beijing. They will play Hweabul tomorrow at 2:30 pm. Fortunately only two players will be missing the match due to work.

It is going to be very tough for them and I expect Hwaebul to dominate the game and win by a few goals. But it will be good experience for the Macau players.

They played in front of a partisan crowd of 22,000 and took all three points. Think about that - the Liga de Elite doesn't even draw 22,000 in total spectators over an entire season.

From the match report, it looks like they were full value for their win as they took the lead on three separate occasions and never trailed. Can't wait for their next home game which will, ironically, be on 25 April versus April 25.

BENFICA MACAU WINS IN NORTH KOREA

Benfica Macau won the second match of the AFC Cup securing a 3-2 away win against DPR Korea’s Hwaepul SC at Kim Il Sung Stadium. Benfica now has two wins from the first two games in the debut AFC Cup campaign.

The final scoreline was the same as in their Group I opener against Hang Yuen FC last week, but yesterday’s result, in front of 22,000 people in the DPR Korea capital is one of the finest in Macau’s football history. The Macau champions made a sensational recovery as they overtook the opponents on the scoreboard.

Leonel, who also scored a double against the Taiwanese club in the memorable comeback on March 7, opened the scoring after just seven minutes in Pyongyang, only to see parity restored in the 13th minute via Hwaepul captain Jong Chol-hyok from the penalty spot.

Kyrgyz international David Tetteh then restored Benfica Macau’s lead just before half-time to make the score 2-1 to the visitors at the break.

Just four minutes into the second half, Hwaepul SC forward Pak Chol-song leveled the scores once more, before the final say went to Benfica Macau and Leonel who stunned the home crowd with the winner 15 minutes from time.
The victorious Macau team now sits on six points in the standings and will return to Pyongyang to face 4.25 SC on April 11. Hwaepul SC is yet to pick up a point in their maiden campaign, and they will be hosting Hang Yuen FC next.

Benfica Macau rested their regular players and still managed to beat Monte Carlo 2:0. Nikki Torrao, who was stretchered off in the match against Hang Yuen and missed the Hwaebul match, was fit to play again and scored the second goal.

    Macau 0:1 Mauritius

I saw some coverage of the match online. This group of Macau players are not really up to standard technically but they fight hard. Without Gois Fernandez, Nikki Torrao and Leong Ka-Hang, the attack really has no bite.

Anyway it is good experience for these players and hopefully the team will be back to full strength come the EAFF Cup qualifiers. I hope they can make it to the second round of the EAFF Cup for once.

FOOTBALL | AFC ASIAN CUP: MSAR TEAM TO PLAY MYANMAR IN LAST GROUP STAGE MATCH

    - TUESDAY, MARCH 27, 2018 -

The Macau SAR football team will make its final appearance in the AFC Asian Cup Group A qualification round today when it faces Myanmar at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon.

Sitting at third and fourth place in the four-team group respectively, neither Myanmar nor Macau can qualify for the next stage of the competition, irrespective of today’s outcome. Macau has never managed to qualify for the Asian Cup.

Tomorrow’s game is the sixth match the MSAR team will play in the qualification rounds. The Macau team lost both of its matches against Kyrgyzstan (3-4 at home and 0-1 away), and suffered a double defeat by India (1-4 away and 0-2 at home).

Now the Macau team is set to play its second game against Myanmar after a 0-4 whitewash earlier in the qualification round.

Myanmar has gotten the better of the last two engagements with Macau, taking home 4-0 victories in both the first leg of this competition’s Asian Cup qualifiers and also at the April 2009 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers.

The Macau SAR team, which ranked 186th in the world by FIFA as of March 15, 2018, is led by captain Cheang Cheng Leong, who plays as a midfielder for C.D. Monte Carlo. The 33-year-old is a record cap-holder in Macau with over 40 appearances.

The Macau team won just one match last year, according to available online records, a friendly played against Laos at the Macau Stadium, where the local team secured a 3-1 victory.

Duarte Alves was on The Asian Game recently and was asked about the possibility of Benfica playing in the Hong Kong Premier League:

"From our perspective, we are trying to develop Macau football. If we are able to join other leagues with Macau people, obviously I think it will be something interesting to consider. But that will involve having, I guess, the whole team being full time, being all professional which is something quite hard at this stage.

But for me, for it to make sense; we're trying to help promote Macau football. If it's our club, you have to be playing in Macau or you can be playing somewhere but with Macau people because that's what we're trying to promote. We're not trying to promote ourselves only, we're trying to promote our region, you know, our homeland.

And so if in those terms I believe it could work. But if it's realistically possible in this moment, I probably find it very, very difficult.

But I think something that would be very interesting - at least at the regional level...you know, Macau is part of China, so is Hong Kong and Taiwan...maybe if all the one, two, three, four football associations or federations could get together and create like a regional, annual tournament. I think that would be very interesting and a start of and another help to develop football not just for Macau, not just for Hong Kong or Taiwan but for the whole country. I think that would be something probably more realistic and that will be very, very interesting to be a part of."
