I still have UTSA as open, which means there apparently hasn't been any published notice of a new head coach

Northern Illinois' trend has been pretty "steady state" over the longer term and also under the current male coach's tenure. This is the case notwithstanding its ups and downs from year to year. The stats say that NIU's likely RPI will be in the area of 0.4684 in 2018. Let's see how the new coach's team's results compare to that before jumping to conclusions.

Any idea why the previous coach from NIU is no longer there?

I disagree. What do you and cantcoach expect? NIU is a mid-major in the MAC. The job isn't going to attract a coach with a long track record.

You asked "Show me the success that either Lewis or UIC had with her on staff." From the NIU press release:

"As an assistant coach at Lewis from 2011-13, Colhoff was involved in every aspect of the program, which posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 18 years during her tenure. Flyers' student-athletes earned six all-conference honors and Lewis earned its first Division II playoff berth in 15 years in 2012 after a 10-win season."

    Also, from the release:

"During her four seasons at UIC, the Flames improved each season, and finished 2017 with a winning record in the Horizon League for the first time in school history. UIC players earned eight all-conference and six all-freshman team recognitions, and back-to-back goalkeeper of the year honors during her tenure, which began when the school first added the women's soccer program in 2014. Her responsibilities at UIC ranged from on-field coaching to recruiting, budget management, overseeing team academic progress and leadership development."

Don't forget that UIC had no women's soccer program prior to the 2014 season and Colhoff has been there from the beginning. Starting a program is no small undertaking and she was instrumental in getting the program off the ground. The text that I bolded above speaks to her ability to function as a HC. Let's not try her and convict her prior to her showing what she can do.

Indeed, UIC's trended on an upward trajectory at a clip of an 0.008 RPI improvement per year since the program started. That's a quite good rate of improvement. Of course, initial improvement is not surprising for a new program (although see Hampton which suggests it's not guaranteed) and it will level off at some point.

Totally agree I know of a few people who have much more experience that never even got a call. Jim from Purdue being one of them. That is a statement of intent from NIU that they went cheap to save money. Women’s soccer not important at that school.

I'm not sure Purdue is a good comparison. A power conference team that is better, but that appears stuck (maybe with a slight improvement). Vs a mid-major with a high improvement rate. I don't see good evidence that supports a conclusion one way or the other. But, I don't know either assistant coach, so all I have to rely on is the statistics. I mean that seriously, because good direct knowledge of details the stats can't take account of can make for better judgments than the stats would provide. Ordinarily the stats are better, but there's a reason the Las Vegas odds makers do better than the stats.

The fact that Ross did a bad job shows a big hole in US soccer development too. At one point this guy has the most licenses in the nation and yet despite all of his credentials he did a terrible job at NIU. The arrogant instructors at the top level in this country need to be a little more humble and realize they have to find better ways to create quality coaches at the college level

The license system is a bit of a scam but that there are other things that go into college coaching. Just because you do or don’t have a certain license doesn’t mean you can recruit. Ross could have been the best coach in the country with all of his licenses but if you can’t get good players into the program doesn’t matter. If the new coach at NIU can recruit that is half the challenge of building a successful team.

I would say recruiting is a bit more than half the job. Team management is another big part. The on-field training is less and less important the higher levels you get, for better or worse. There are "A" licensed coaches who are asses or just have no personality. That's why, I'd argue the first job of a good head coach is to hire assistants who do well what they don't, whether that's recruiting or team training or administrivia or whatever.
Related to hotseat, when you evaluate coaches, it's hard to judge recruiting other than the stupid ratings of players and classes and of course the results the coach gets with 'those' players. But is the idea of 'doing more with less' due to player evals, or good management and training of the team? Not often easy to tell.
Unfortunately, that's why the coaches perceived reputation and personality become important but hard to quantify.

If you really want to mainly train and develop players, coach your local u12 team. More 'A' licensed coaches should be doing that. In d1 college soccer, how you train the team is likely not what's getting you hired or fired.

ps- agree that the coaching schools have become a racket- now cost 4K for a B or A license! Coaches are just passing that big fee right onto their clubs and families and the pay to play cycle continues...

Update - Mt. St. Marys has apparently named the assistant Krause as the new head coach. (Had player meeting and told recruits). Previous coach finally taken off the website but no release of any kind and they haven't yet changed her title to 'head coach'. Another asst listed there has been in CO coaching for 4 months already. Incompetence, inside job, cheap option, path of least resistance?? You can judge.

She has never been a head coach at any level and not sure she was even full time as the assistant last year. She did GPS and video analysis during grad school for UNC but as a 2014 graduate, she may be the youngest DI head coach in the country? Maybe in any Division?

Good Luck to her and those kids.

All coaches do is id, there's no recruiting or selling. If the coach's school happens to be the highest bidder (rep, logo, P5, location, public price, scholly (the one thing coach could influence, but it's generally a wash)), they win. Simple.

The turnover tells you how irrelevant they are...what is the percentage of coaches who sent id camp invites within the past three or four years who's regimes are now ended? Not so much the case with the 20 natty championship contenders but don't count them, as they are rarely "hot". Some 9th grader and up can't (and doesn't) assume the id camp coach will be around, "recruiting" = id and hope your (current) school's stuff is best.

What is truly sad is that they took such great care in hiring a top flight men's coach to re-start their program, then follow up that hire with this...YIKES!

It’s Mt. St. Mary’s. What did you expect? Do you think they even care? Bottom of the Northeast Conference and destined to stay there unless they ever start to care.

OMG, I count 5 openings left and if women get 3 of them, they'll have the same number of women's coaches they had in 2004! Men will only have added the equivalent of every new entry to Division I since then.
