https://sports.yahoo.com/us-soccer-gms-report-ceo-021914766.html Details of the role have been clarified a little. The GM's will report to Dan Flynn. Knowledge of the US leagues will be an important factor in the role. This also further confirms Cordeiro's hands off approach. "“The main responsibilities will include hiring and firing of the senior national team head coaches, overall responsibility for the technical side of the senior team, build a strong, integrated national team staff and management of the day-to-day environment, and monitor of the player pool and integration of new players,”" Current search team is Dan Flynn, Jay Berhalter, Carlos Bocanegra, Angela Hucles(ussf board member), Ryan Mooney(director of sporting development) , and Nico Romeijn(sport development programs director). So don't expect someone from outside the umbrella to get the job. I really thought that they may bring in someone from a successful club team or national team set up, who could bring fresh ideas. Guess not.
USSF: Small Timers. They refuse to see that soccer is a global sport and that the federation needs outside help. Until they open their eyes and accept this, the MNT will not get anywhere.
So, this further confirm that Cordeiro's primary job is to fly around the globe, enjoying a life of luxury which include fine dining, 5 star hotels, and high end escorts, while golfing with corrupt con men. All expenses paid by the generous pockets of the USSF and FIFA.
What did you think his job was? This is an unpaid, elected position with very little power. And what's wrong with the GM/TD reporting to Flynn? My guess is that this is as much about organizational politics in terms of where Flynn stands, but I doubt it has much practical importance.
This further beg the question of why do we even need a President, if his job is to do nothing? The USSF will continue to be a joke, until they make the President a paid full time job where qualified candidates have a history of successfully running large organizations and corporations. Heck, just make Flynn the President and CEO of the USSF and call it a day. Do away with this useless election and fake ass title of President.
Cordeiro's primary job right now is getting the World Cup in 2026, etc. I would say that folks have heaped lots of abuse onto Gulati recently, while Dan Flynn (the CEO) hasn't been discussed all that much. Having the GM report to him will open him up to more scrutiny. To me this news really doesn't change anything. There's a group of folks like Bocanegra & Jay Berhalter that will help Flynn select the GM. The GM then hires the head coach. Fine with me. People may not know Jay Berhalter............... https://www.fourfourtwo.com/us/feat...most-powerful-people-us-soccer-20-16?page=0,2
That's one thing we agree on. Of course, part of the underlying problem is that power is spread across so many groups. The candidates were having to pander to beach soccer (!) as part of their campaigns.
I thought that was still Gulati's job? And it's at a great risk of loosing to Morocco, just like we lost out going to the WC.
Interesting. The CEO just completely bypassed the current president. It looks like a Chinese firewall now. Two sides of one MLS coin.
We barely hear those two words come out of anyone's mouth unless one of the following occurs: A new coach is hired A new president is elected BigSoccer
Yeah, like I said in another thread, the scope of the GM's role is kind of disappointing. I was really hoping for a more radical departure from past practices. But it still should be an improvement to have a club GM who's used to searching for, hiring, and firing coaches replace Gulati in this role for the USMNT.
This is awful. MLS will control the national team completely. And the women, who make the money, get only one voice. At least Gulati was involved in the federation, negotiated with Klinsmann, etc. Cordeiro is just going to live the jet-set lifestyle and let others do the work.
Losing to Qatar and then to Morocco in a competition to host a global outdoor sporting event requiring massive infrastructure, tells us all we need to know about the reputation of the United States internationally.
So it was the women that brought in all that cash from Copa America? Also, wasn't there supposed to be a GM for men and women? One problem I see for this is having Jay in a decision making role that may include making a decision on his brother. US Soccer doesn't need even an appearance of nepotism any more.
Basically I think where it all goes wrong is when the GM runs the show including Techincal Director and there isn't anymore any internal auditing of the program's success because, as far as the GM is concerned, he and USSF, by association with him, are a raving success. Dan Flynn seems like a progressive guy https://www.ussoccer.com/about/governance/board-of-directors/secretary-general-ceo-dan-flynn and as CEO with a long history in the sport In America, it seems he should be aware that the organization needs a Technical Department which reports to him and has latitude to operate independently of GM (MLS) where that works best or under the auspices of the GM in some cases where that is needed.
honestly a gm reporting to a ceo/president seems like the way just about every other american sports team works
Having said the above I now see that Berhalter stepped in for Flynn last year when Flynn was recovering from heart transplant surgery. MLS has pretty much taken over US Soccer and the incestuous relationship would easily explain why we didn't qualify for Russia and why we will not qualify for Qatar either. It seems that America has fallen victim to the vice of every other national program save the few who have been reformed like Germany. The best hope is that Flynn is replaced with somebody not connected with MLS when he retires and that we can get an independent technical department into the organization. I really feel like it's time for Congress to take a look at what's happening. I have no knowledge about the legal aspects of how an organization like US Soccer operates but it is in the public interest to have some independence from MLS.
After thinking about it, Gulati was so much the point man that when it failed he was easily to blame. He was the figurehead. I think US Soccer has come up with a way to spread the blame around. Well it's the GM's fault, and the CEO picked a bad GM, and the board selected a poor CEO. There's no way to pinpoint issues like you had with Gulati. Like a head coach firing a defensive and offensive coordinator, just shuffling chairs. Like you guys have mentioned MLS actually will grab more power within USSF now. MLS needs to be strong and develop to help advance the game in this country, but without some stricter regulations for homegrown talent, not sure it helps a ton.
While I can totally understand the trepidation, you might remember the job that Carlos Bocanegra just did as TD at Atlanta, and who he hired as manager. I just hope his voice is the loudest on that panel, followed by Jay Berhalter, and that the rest listen to them.
