Elliot Simmons (19) a dual national who recently signed a 2.5 year professional contract with Swedish top tier Allsvenskan league club Dalkurd FF has joined Mikkelin Palloilijat (MP) in Finland on first team loan for the new season starting Jan 1st until November 2018. MP is managed by Janne Wilkman who until recently was the Head Scandinavian scout for Aston Villa. Simmons is ex Ottawa Fury and MK Dons FC Academy product and had extended trials with Villa the season prior to signing for Dalkurd. Simmons has been called up twice by Canada U20 for training camps, the last being January 2017 but has never been selected for a match. He has five caps for England U18 Schoolboys. He has been quietly developing in Spain and Sweden this past 18 months and has grown dramatically from 5ft 2 to 6ft since age 16, so definitely one for the future. Many clubs back in the UK will be monitoring him in Finland playing senior football.

Can't talk about MLS as a whole but the 3 Canadian MLS teams are terrible at nurturing and developing talents. Hope he gets out of there sooner rather than later.

    https://www.soctakes.com/2018/04/06/okello-attracting-attention-bundesliga/

Noble Okello is a player with an uncertain future. Okello, currently on contract with Toronto FC, is a player Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg is interested in acquiring. The 17-year-old has represented Canada at the U-17 level, but is yet to make any impact at the MLS or USL level for Toronto FC.

In spite of this lack of playing time, Okello was invited to train with Wolfsburg in January and impressed the team’s technical staff enough to warrant three transfer bids for the player.

Looks like Liam Millar at 18 years old is on the verge of seeing 1st club minutes this years!

The next Academy star 'perfect' for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool identified

    • The 18-year-old frontman has enjoyed a fine season for the Reds - making the leap into Critchley's under-23s squad, earning a first senior cap for Canada and being handed a Premier League squad number by Klopp after recently training at Melwood.

This is a great article about the MLS homegrown program that goes beyond just signing them. Pretty much what we are saying. To quote:
"But if prospects sign and don’t play, the academy isn’t reaching its goal. It has to be able identify talents at a young age, develop them and play them quickly to gain either a competitive edge or financial profit.".

    https://www.prosoccerusa.com/mls/mls-top-academies-and-the-players-who-make-them/

    - the impact of an academy isn’t immediate
    - It also comes out of the owner’s pocket
    - NYRB have 33% of their playing time played by homegrown players, Philly 24%, RSL 18%,

Due to Turkey defeating Portugal 2-1 and Canada tying Japan 1-1, Canada will have to defeat France to qualify for the semi-finals

Regardless of the results, this has been a massive step forward for the program.

This was achieved without Alphonso Davies, Marcus Godinho and Zachary Brault-Guillard

Have we ever had a player before who blew right past the whole U-xx setup and become a starter on our MNT? Sort of like Raheem Sterling isn'tit?

Davies is becoming one of the most consistent MLS level players (Osorio, Kaye, Davies & Piette) and he is the youngest of that group by a long shot.

And back on the home front ....

The academy season has wrapped up. Both the Whitecaps and Impact teams did great.

Whitecaps U16/17 & U18/19 teams got second place in their divisions and are in the playoffs. The U15 team took first in their division but I guess the U15s don't have playoffs.

Montreal took first in their division for ALL 3 age groups!!! U15, U16/17 & U18/19 all first place. Great showing.

No TFC teams I can see playing in USSF Development Academy league.

That's because all of them are playing in either the USL, League 1 Ontario, or Ontario Player Development League. Cheaper travel and the quality is pretty good too.

Thanks. I thought it was something like that but I didn't remember the details for the younger age groups. It's great to see the Impact & Whitecaps youth doing so well and that made me curious about TFC. Especially when they were listed on the USSF site but with zero games played.

Canada lose 2-1 against France. But what a tournament for Canada.

We finished 6th overall out of 12.
    The future is bright.
