Hi, guys, and welcome in this new year to all of the small contingent of Nadeshiko Japan posters and to all of the less-small-but-I-am-afraid-anyway-not-humongous contigent of Nadeshiko Japan followers who don't post much, or at all, but anyway keep loyally reading us! :giggle::giggle::giggle:

Phew, It's 2018! Hey, we must admit 2017 was highs-and-lows for Nadeshiko Japan football (including overseas players):

Highs: :) - we won AFC U-19 Asian Championship, with a very convincing young team, giving us high hopes for U-20 WWC.
    - We've got second place at Universiade 2017: considering it was a worldwide tournament and we've got a silver medal, I count it as an "high" and for sure not just a "so-so".
    - Saki Kumagai once again won Champions' League with OL.
    - Yukari Kinga had a sort of second youth in Australia/China and nearly won Australian league with Canberra United, before lately joining Melbourne City, although with a little less luck.
    - Mana Iwabuchi flourished again, after a longtime injury had kept her from pursuing her career in Bayern München.

So-so: :cautious: - We weren't even in the final of AFC U-16 Asian Championship, but we anyway managed to grab the ticket for U-17 WWC by winning the third-place match vs China; hey, that was the important thing!
    - we won two matches and lost two matches at Algarve Cup; a quite disappointing tournament to tell the truth: I can't actually tag it as a "low", though, because there were some good matches anyway, like the one vs Iceland, because Yokoyama was still scoring like crazy and because after all we lost a deciding match for an own-goal at the last minute vs the team that would eventually become Euro Champions 2017, i.e. Netherlands.
    - developent of the Senior NT goes on, even if I am not sure if this has to go with the "so-so"s or the "lows": let's say that we put here everything good that we can take, and we're going to soon discuss the "lows" below.
    - Nadeshiko club football is quite interesting to follow and showcases some good domestic talents. Anyway I am wondering if Beleza's dominance doesn't depress development a little, in a NT perspective... Although I must admit it's not much different from INAC years, when everything was good for Nadeshiko NT. Yes, there were unexpected results (JEF United winning Nadeshiko League Cup, Nojima Stella Kanagawa in the final of Empress' Cup), but these looked quite random and episodic. I'll just add that quality (and especially completeness) of video-coverage is anyway absolutely unsatisfactory compared to most important women's leagues in the world.
    - Kumi Yokoyama migrated to Frauen-Bundesliga and found a solid starting place in 1.FFC Frankfurt, but her team's position is not so good right now and her scoring spell seemed to run out.
    - Erina Yamane went overseas, but in a quite mediocre-positioned team of a quite mediocre-positioned league (compared to the best European ones).
    - Yuki Ogimi seemed to somehow find her place in Chicago Red Stars, but her team didn't succeed in play-offs and one can wonder if her NT career hasn't finished for good.
    - Ryoko Takara won Norwegian league with LSK-Kvinner, but clearly fell out of grace in the second part of the season and got back to Japan in the end.
    - Ami Otaki, who was a very promising player back in 2012, came back from retirement this year and joined Paris FC: she's now considered just a bench-player, but we can't help smiling for having her back on the pitch.

Lows:  - although it was just a bunch of glorified friendly matches, our performance at Tournament of Nations was abysmal.
    - We recently lost quite clearly the final of 2017 EAFF East-Asian Championship in Japan: we don't rule anymore, not even in our share of Asia.
    - in general, Nadeshiko Japan lost quite some positions in FIFA rankings, being on the verge of exiting top 10. In Sasaki's era, I guess we were solidly in top 5 for most of the time. Let's say that NT's development is a long process and, as Manchester Nadeshiko put it at the end of 2017 thread, we're not really sure where we're at, after 2 years of Takakura's tenure.
    - Although Rumi Utsugi was one of the best players in her team and Nahomi Kawasumi set an NWSL assists' seasonal-record, Seattle Reign's season was very disappointing, since they couldn't even grab 4th place to play-off for the title.
    - Yuri Kawamura, as it was recently mentioned, had a good start in NWSL, only to face a season-ending injury soon after.

    The future ahead

Well, ok, we're now in 2018, that's when push comes to shove. Many deciding moments wait for us in this season. If we only consider National Team football, we have:

    - Algarve Cup 2018 at the beginning of March. Ok, probably the less important tournament of the season, but a good training ground for AFC Asian Cup. Also, I anyway miss a good result at Algarve (and, beyond that, Manchester Nadeshiko will be there and we all want to see him celebrate!)
    - AFC Asian Cup 2018 in April: that's the key moment; we're in the hardest group, but we need to qualify for WWC 2019 anyway. Actually, we should manage to make it even should we finish third in our group, but of course that's not what we want to happen. By far, the most important event of the year.
    - U-20 WWC in France in August. I'd call it the second most important event of the year. We have a very good team and I guess we go in France to fight for the title. It would be very important also to furtherly develop young players for Senior Team in a 2019-2020 perspective.
    - 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, in August-September (I guess the schedule will be conflicting with U-20 WWC, so Takakura won't be able to call U-20 players, if she had that in mind). In 2010, winning Asian Games was quite the springboard for Sasaki's team to take the crucial leap to 2011, I guess. Can the story be repeating?
    - U-17 WWC in Uruguay at the end of November. When there is a youth WWC, Japan always has to fight for the title, although this team was less convincing than our U-20 on the Asian scene.

Although I am not sure about that, I guess it's quite likely that US Federation will make another Tournament of the Nations and will invite Japan. If that's not conflicting with the rest of our schedule, it could probably be a good training ground for Asian Games.

Whew! Did I forget anything? :)

Well, I just forgot to wish a nice, funny, peaceful and sportsmanslike year to all of our teams, to all of our players, and to all us followers. :ninja:
A year ago, I had made a wish for Miyama, that unluckily didn't come true. I spend anyway another though for her right now. Please Aya, come back somehow to Nadeshiko football, even if not in the form of the player we all knew and venerated.

Also, as I did in previous years, I am probably going to post soon some rankings of Nadeshiko club football's seasonal scorers: expect it soon on this new thread. :)
I am going to post the link to this thread on the previous one and then ask moderators to lock it.

And we already have a game involving a Japanese player on the New Year's Eve! :)

Today, in Australia, Western Sydney Wanderers-Melbourne City was played. Melbourne City won by 0-1 with a late Jessica Fishlock's goal at 92': it was an impactful goal, because this win propels Melbourne back at 4th place after 8 matchdays (at least for most of the teams: it's a strange limping league with 9 teams), at 5 points from the top and with new hopes to fight for play-offs.
Yukari Kinga played the whole match and you can see by yourself from highlights her part in the goal's action:

    Happy New Year everyone....

After watching hour after hour after hour of High School footie (unepomme would be proud of me) I continue to be hopelessly hooked on the the womens game in Japan at all levels.
Even at their age it's apparent that they are 'driven' individuals with a true love of the game, inspired by the their heros... present and past.....(and the tears get me every time!)
There is no substitute for honesty, sincerity, and genuineness in sport ...whatever the sport.
In a world where the mens game has become 'the product' and the participants motives for playing are questionable I'm proud to be one of those "freaks" who follows womens football .... Japanese womens football.
It's simple ....I just continue to be get that uplifting feeling you get watching any sportsperson participating who is genuinely enthused by love of their sport...Also it's the best antidote I know to the cynical world of 'big money sport'

In light of that I would like to propose a New Years toast to start off my ramblings of 2018

"To Japanese women who continue to put their boots on and play football for all the right reasons"

    Long may they continue....NADESHIKO FOREVER

    Happy New Year...

    Of course.

Miyazawa, Okino, Kurata and Ushijima - all soon disappeared, but new stars might appear for the rest games. My biggest surprise was Kurata Akari (Jumonji's #8). Although she was not in a perfect condition, she showed a lot of good sense as a footballer.

Very interesting video. :) Yuka Kurosaki was part of a Fujieda Junshin team that won High School Championship in style back at the beginning of 2016. I went back in our threads and I noticed that the team was including Fukuta twin sisters!

Another interesting player from that team was Moe Kimotsuki, who scored two goals and had an assist for a third one in the final match of that year. But, unluckily, i never heard of her anymore, since then. :(

Belatedly I found this video for Manchester Nadeshiko.

Seiwa's #7's mother was also Seiwa's captain 27 years ago, and was defeated at the final. She failed PK in the PK shootout.

Many thanks unepomme....wondered why TV director kept going back to this lady in the crowd....now I know.
(if only there was a magic button on u tube that would translate dialogue)

ps...Shutoku v Sakuyo today......most watchable game so far in my opinion
Sakuyo No 8... one to watch for the future... she has a nice touch for a player so big and powerful.

Thanks to Manchester Nadeshiko for insisting to know something more and thanks to Unepomme for digging up this story!

As much as Manchester Nadeshiko, I like very much Japanese Youth football and the ethos behind it! :coffee:

Once again, as I do every year (at least in the last 4-5 years, I guess), I compiled a chart of the seasonal scorers of 2017 at club level. Please, let me know if this feature is liked/interesting and if you appreciate that I share it with you, guys! :)

Many of you, probably, already know the format by now, although it happens only once per year, so I'll put the general rules of the format in a "spoiler" window, that you can skip or open, as you like. :giggle:
    Show Spoiler
The chart has no National Teams goals, no overseas leagues goals, only Division 1 club competitions in Japan (including Empress' Cup, that has clubs from all levels, but no Division 2, no Nadeshiko League Division 2 Cup nor any lesser league). So, basically it is: Nadeshiko League Division 1 + Nadeshiko League Cup (Div. 1 only) + Empress' Cup (only counting goals from Div. 1 clubs).
The format works this way (example):
    4 - Risa Fukasawa - JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies - 11 (5 / 5 / 1)(+7!)
This reads as follows: Risa Fukusama is 4th in the chart, played in JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies, scored 11 goals, 5 in Nadeshiko League Division 1, 5 in Nadeshiko League Cup (Div. 1) and 1 in Empress' Cup; also she scored 7 goals more than previous season (this is an example from last year's chart; this season Fukasawa scored a lot less). The fact that the comparison is in bold and with an exclamation mark (+7!) means that the difference from previous season is more than 5 goals better or worse than the goals scored that season; otherwise, the number in bracket isn't in bold and has no punctuation. I don't make comparisons with previous season if the player was in a different league, even if I have the data from that league, because I don't think it makes sense to compare the number of goals scored in Nadeshiko League Division 1 with those scored in Division 2 or in Frauen-Bundesliga: in those cases, a note will state: (can't be properly compared). If a player was in Division 1 for only a part of the season, the goals she scored there will be counted, but no goal in other leagues will be counted (for instance, Kumi Yokoyama only has the goals scored in Japan in 2017, not also those scored in Germany; i'll compare anyway her record with previous season, although a note will state that she didn't fully play it). Also: when two players were even on goals, I've written first the one with more goals in Division 1 (arguably, the most important competition); when they were even in Division 1 goals, I just used alphabetical order.

These are the first 20 positions of the chart (actually the first 23 position: 9 players were tied at 15th place, so I added 3 positions to accomodate them all):

    Nadeshiko League Seasonal scorers

    1 - Mina Tanaka - Nippon TV Beleza - 28 (15 / 6 / 7)(+2)
    2 - Yuika Sugasawa - Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies - 14 (9 / 3 / 2)(+5!)
    - Yuka Momiki - Nippon TV Beleza - 14 (8 / 5 / 1)(-6!)
    4 - Arisa Minamino - Nojima Stella Kanagawa Sagamihara - 13 (8 / 1 / 4) (can't be properly compared: in Challenge League last season)*
    5 - Emi Nakajima - INAC Kobe Leonessa - 12 (8 / 3 / 1)(+7!)
    6 - Sawako Yasumoto - Mynavi Vegalta Sendai Ladies - 10 (6 / 2 / 2)(+5!)
    - Kumi Yokoyama - AC Nagano Parceiro Ladies - 10 (6 / 4 / 0)(-17!) (only played part of the season: transferred to Frauen-Bundesliga)°
    - Riko Ueki - Nippon TV Beleza - 10 (4 / 3 / 3)(+5!)
    9 - Mizuki Sonoda - Albirex Niigata Ladies - 9 (3 / 3 / 3)(+9!)
    10 - Chinatsu Kira - Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies - 8 (7 / 0 / 1)(+7!)
    - Caitlin Foord (AUS) - Mynavi Vegalta Sendai Ladies - 8 (4 / 1 / 3) (can't be properly compared: in Aussie-W-League last season)
    - Mizuho Sakaguchi - Nippon TV Beleza - 8 (3 / 2 / 3)(-2)
    13 - Megumi Takase - INAC Kobe Leonessa - 7 (5 / 1 / 1)(-1)
    - Shiho Tomari - AC Nagano Parceiro Ladies - 7 (4 / 2 / 1)(-3)
    15 - Haruka Hamada - Vegalta Sendai Ladies - 6 (4 / 2 / 0)(-3)
    - Risa Ikadai - Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies - 6 (4 / 1 / 1)(+5!)
    - Mai Kyokawa - INAC Kobe Leonessa - 6 (4 / 2 / 0)(-4)
    - Sayaka Oishi - Albirex Niigata Ladies - 6 (3 / 2 / 1)(-4)
    - Kozue Ando - Urawa Red Diamonds Ladies - 6 (2 / 2 / 2) (can't be properly compared: in Frauen-Bundesliga last season)°
    - Shoko Chino - JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies - 6 (2 / 1 / 3)(+5!)
    - Rika Masuya - INAC Kobe Leonessa - 6 (2 / 4 / 0)(+3)
    - Azusa Iwashimizu - Nippon TV Beleza - 6 (1 / 4 / 1)(+3)
    - Naoko Sakuramoto - JEF Uniited Ichihara Chiba Ladies - 6 (1 / 4 / 1)(+6!)

    * Anyway, Minamino has scored just one goal less than in season 2016, when she had scored 11 goals in Division 2 + 3 goals in Nadeshiko League Cup Div. 2, for a total of 14.
° Kumi Yokyama trasferred to 1.FFC Frankfurt, in Frauen-Bundesliga in July 2017; Kozue Ando came back to Japan from Frauen-Bundesliga at the end of June 2017.

    Some observations:
    - Mina Tanaka, with just two goals more than previous season, is Best Seasonal Scorer 2017. Last season, she had been top scorer of Division 1, like this year, but she had been a goal short of Kumi Yokoyama in the whole seasonal chart. It's worth noticing that Kumi Yokayama herself manages to appear in this year's chart (and at 6th place!), despite missing more than half of Japanese season because of her transfer in Germany. It's obvious that her -17! from previous season doesn't have much meaning, taking into account the fact that she basically played less than half of the games (she anyway scored just 3 goals so far in Frauen-Bundesliga o_O). Also, even if I said that I wasn't taking National Teams goals into account, it's also worth noticing that Mina Tanaka is at second place in goals scored with Senior NT in 2017 (5 goals, one goal short of Kumi Yokoyama once again; for records, following ones are Momiki and Iwabuchi with 3 each, Hasegawa and Nakajima with 2 each, Sugasawa with 1 + an own goal vs Netherlands).
    - The very worrying part, for our national scoring needs, is that in 2016 we had three players at 20 seasonal goals or more (Yokoyama, Tanaka and Momiki) and the 7 players tied at 15th place were at 8. Now we had just one player with more than 20 goals: the second placed already drops at 14! And the 9 players tied at 15th place are at just 6. o_Oo_Oo_O We're doing worse!
    - Many relevant moves in the upper half of the chart, less in the lower part. Emi Nakajima is not the only one at +7!, but I guess she's more relevant than Chinatsu Kira, both from a domestic scene and from a National Team perspective. Mizuki Sonoda's +9! is speculative, because I've got the feeling that this season was her debut in Division 1 and last year she wasn't in Albirex Senior roster, so this isn't a real "comparison" with previous season. Can anyone confirm? Anyway, it was a brilliant debut: I hope she's here to stay, because, unluckily, we had more than one young star fade away after a few seasons.
    - Sugasawa was way better and Momiki way worse than in 2016, but I dare to say that neither was really convincing, either in Nadeshiko League or in National Team. :cautious:
    - Arisa Minamino is very impressive! She basically confirmed the good impression she had made in lower divisions and that's never easy when you get to the big stage. I guess this chart gives more consistence to what someone (I guess unepomme, with his hawk-eye) had already noticed some months ago: Minamino would deserve more than just a look from Takakura. :coffee:
    - There is always a "league veteran" from a middle-ranked club, with no significant NT career, who has a good result in the seasonal chart; last year it was Risa Fukasawa; this year it was Sawako Yasumoto. It's worth noticing that, despite Vegalta's market campaigns from last two seasons, she's Mynavi's best seasonal scorer, even ahead of much more heralded star from overseas Caitlin Foord. :ninja: By the way, I guess it was from golden INAC's times of Goebel-Yanez and Ji So-Yun that a foreign player wasn't breaking into seasonal top 10, so a nod to Foord anyway for the achievement.
    - Ueki looks like she's for real: let's give her more playing time and we're going to see. :geek:
    - Won't say much about lower positions (including even some captains/defenders/veterans as Iwashimizu or Sakuramoto), but I'll just notice that Kozue Ando, although playing just a fragment of the season, managed anyway to break into top 20, while being 35 years old! Class. Respect. :notworthy:
    - Notable names from last year who are now out of top 20 Seasonal Scorers:
    Risa Fukasawa (-8!)
    Rin Sumida (-7!)
    Narumi Miura (-7!)
    Ami Sugita (-6!)
    Megumi Kamionobe (-6!)
    Ayaka Michigami (-6!)
    Yu Nakasato (-5!)
    Shinobu Ohno (-4)
    Yui Hasegawa (-3)
Yuri Kawamura last year was tied at 11th place with 9 goals, we all know she transferred to North Carolina Courage, where she suffered torn ACL.
Michi Goto was tied at 15th place with 8 goals, she now plays in Spain with Real Sociedad.

Happy New Year, best of happiness, health and joyful laughter to all the long suffering and extremely faithful Nadeshiko fans. I choose to sit in the very tall vigorously growing weeds and observe. I hope one day Nadeshiko can once again be one of the top teams in the world FIFA rankings. I have been following the exploits of some other teams lately in addition to Nadeshiko ... ie. Lionesses. I would like to commend the enthusiasm, passion, and faithfulness of the followers of the Nadeshiko the last few years since it has been a journey akin to a long struggling marathon while hitting the wall at the 5km mark and not a 10 km sprint race. I hope that the long journey yields bountiful fruit as the next Women's World Cup looms on the horizon. I think all present fans of Nadeshiko yearn for respectability of skill, play, competitiveness and most importantly the ability to have a spectacular and revered winning record. Not only soccer and the fighting spirit of Nadeshiko Japan is of interest but the entire culture, food, people way of life and all aspects of Japan are very, very interesting. One day if I am blessed I would like to go to Japan for at least a month's travel and see all of this! Thanks to all the Nadeshiko contributors who continue to be faithful and insightful. Peace be with you.

Sigh, the INAC-Beleza "clasico" went south once more for us, even at youth level! :(

For those living close to France and Brittany in particular, the Japan U20 team will play two games in France on the 4th and 7th of April in preparation for the U20 World Cup. Location not disclosed yet, games just confirmed by the FFF.

I live close to France but... let's say not properly close to Brittany!

Maybe Manchester Nadeshiko could be interested instead. :geek:

    U.K.
Thanks for that..opportunities to see any Nadeshiko matches in Europe are so few I try to grab them whenever they arise...any chance you could post dates when they are published.

Looks like my life savings are going to disappear this year.
    (Algarve Cup...now this...and we've not mentioned U20 WWC)

High School semi's tomorrow....should be two good games.
