it's all moot because he's currently the manager of Japan. We all know Halilhozic is a legendary manager both on the club level and NT level, great counter-attacking tactician and also knows how to play entertaining football. What I want to know is what Halilhozic sees when he is looking at our squad (if the rumors are true about him liking us more than Japan, etc.). It's possible he might be playing mind games or just saying non-sense to troll the media but hypothetically, let's say it's true. What does he see that makes him like us? Does he think he can maximize SHM and KSY?
as also a supporter of JNT, i haven't seen any great tactical plan or entertaining football under Vahid. his comments/interviews are as bad.. if not worse than Uli Stielike & Shin TY as well.
I was basing my opinion from his French days. Algeria also killed us with some terrific counter-attacks in that 2014 WC game as well. I don't know enough about his media handling, but his results and success are far greater than Stielike and Shin combined.
true, doesn't mean he is great tactician nor do his teams play entertaining football. as for 2014 WC, they were relatively unknown to many of us... and good chance KNT underestimated Algeria (who knew Riyad Mahrez is this good?). edit - as for his "french days".. i personally don't have a clue. has anyone seen teams he managed in Ligue 1 back in early 2000s?
If he isn't a great tactician, why does he have a high winning record? The only stint I remember that wasn't great for him was PSG (maybe he had failures in Eastern European leagues, but I wouldn't know anything about that). You can say 2014 Algeria were unknown, this and that. Halilhodzic still got them qualified and not like Algeria make the World Cup every time out. Halilhodiz knew how to expose us and knew what our weaknesses were. Completely destroyed us.
does he? i don't think his winning % stands out.. not that it is bad. as for 2014, he deserves full credit for destroying Korea. at the same time, 2014 Korea was .. well, I don't think I have to go into details on how disappointing of a cycle & team as a whole were at the time. anyways, while he destroyed Korea... he also lost to "Algeria" with golden generation of Ivory Coast
It wasn't really counter-attacks but long balls thrown in our shitty defense which was unable to handle it. Yeah, he started from scratch with Lille (Ligue 2), got promoted in Ligue 1 and reached the CL for their first season in Ligue 1. I was way too young at that time to judge his performances but I can say he was hugely appreciated and now he is remembered as a legend at Lille. Plus, overall he's a well known coach in Ligue 1 and his 2014 WC performance increased his popularity. edit : I can add he was known for his discipline and defensive work.
He also drawed with Russia and gave Germany some serious trouble in the next round. Halilhodzic is that type of manager who will play boring football if he needs to get a win/draw, but will also know how to play some amusing football if he knows his team has the talent for it. Maybe he doesn't play entertaining football with Japan because he knows their capabilities? Either way, it's hard to play "entertaining" football for most National Teams.
so did Korea & Algeria wasn't very good vs Russia in that game. btw, he also lost 4-1 to Korea at home w/ Japan as JNT manager, I only know him as someone who plays "boring" football.. regardless of who the opponent is. on capabilities reason/excuse.. well, i guess that also applies to Uli, Shin TY and host of other KNT managers regardless of who KNT play against..
If Shin TY gets anything other than 3 straight losses, he will enjoying his job for many years to come. The KFA cartel came away unscathed and will look to solidify their powerbase. No way they're going to bring in any foreign coach after the debacle with Hiddink and others.
Why are people trying to downplay Halilhodzic's work with Algeria? He showed great tactical flexibility and set up a system that worked for his players. The "underestimated" excuse is lame – Algeria still gave Germany problems even after everyone realized what a good side they were in the group stage.
Well, you are only referring to his work with the JNT after all, but that doesn't always necessarily mean the same could/will apply to the KNT, I mean compared to the JNT, things could/might work out better for the KNT instead.
2014 WC and with JNT. Imo, Algeria under Vahid had one very good performance.. which was a loss to Germany in OT. Vahid's record at 2014 WC = 1 win (Korea), 1 draw (they were poor vs Russia), and 2 loss. Do any of you remember Algeria vs Belgium? Neither do I.. tbh, but again.. they lost. He doesn't have any convincing win.. unless you count defeating Korea as one. It's the same with Japan. Again, he doesn't have any convincing win under his management. He has few embarrassing losses.. not to mention, he whines A LOT (while always blaming everyone but himself as usual). Japan & Korea have similar issues... poor defenders, awful GKs & lack of consistent goal threat/scorer. I haven't seen him rectify the defensive issue for Japan... doubt he can with Korea. I personally don't see his system is good for Korea.... and also as supporter of Korea, I don't want to see one who I don't rate for Japan to manage Korea either.
So the win against Korea wasn't a "very good performance" for you? We were bad, but that doesn't mean Algeria didn't play very well. They pressed excellently, they took advantage of our passivity and weakness at the back, and they took their chances. What more did you want out of them? They played completely differently against Belgium, sitting deep (an example of Halilhodzic's flexibility). And they outplayed Belgium for the first hour, stifling their attacks and exploiting Belgium's weakness at FB to score. Admittedly they were undone by Belgium's plan B, but being the better side for the majority of the match against a team that was far better on paper and holding Belgium off until pretty late in the game is hardly unconvincing. Look at the performance, not just the result. Agreed that they weren't great against Russia, but they did what they needed to do. And if that's the worst performance of a tournament, I would say that's a pretty good tourney overall. You have some tough standards. Makes me wonder how Jung Sungryong ever won your seal of approval.
Takeuchi likes to do mental gymnastics quite often. The JSR is still the worst one. I'll give him a pass for his down-playing Halilhodzic, but we would be lucky to get an NT manager of that caliber.
not difficult to back Jung SR when other hopefuls of KNT were all pretty disappointing for national team & club the past 3 to 4 years. Jung SR is winning titles while 2016 K league GK of the year is a backup to 38 yr old in J League & another is a dud for Vissel Kobe.
Well to takeuchi's and JSR's defense, JSR seems to have had an amazing season this year and should at least get an opportunity. Still doesn't change my disagreement with takeuchi over JSR being better than the other GKs in the KNT dress.
Well even though its popular to bash anything related to Japan, facts can't be denied. I'm not a fan of the lazy panda JSR. But he is doing good now. And tell me if I'm wrong has'nt he been playing okey in the recent NT games?
