It doesnt necessarily mean that Sweden will play high line. Their backline's strength is their disciplined positioning. I would say that chances are they will play cautious so not to concede. If we can score first and force them to push up, then we can play to our advantage with Son. With Mexico, they will dictate the flow of the match through possession and high press so we have to take advantage of quick transitions. If Mexico does badly against Germany in their first match, it will be better for us.

Lets be honest here. The book is out on us. We have to believe that after the last WC where all the teams played the high line with a full-on black out press (man on man). We got exposed big time.

I expect the same shit again this tournament. We need to be fully prepared for this and change our game plan, IMO. Once we sense the high press, we need to change from counter-attacking to a more settled approach. Only problem there is that usually means meaningless backpasses-resets and a pointless buffalo circle around the opponents goal.

We dont have the technical ability to handle a hard press especially against the likes of Alemania. The germans are the germans so expect precision and diligence. They have the patience to weather any storm. Swedes will play conservatively for the most part. Mexico are a cocky bunch who are too into attacking so maybe this will be the game where we can surprise (highly doubt though).

They will have no choice but to raise their line is what Lee Young-pyo is stating. Unless they're content with getting a draw, I don't see how the Swedes plan to advance by parking the bus in all three games.

I would like a 4-3-3 with SHM and KCH on the wings and KSY&LJS as double CMs backed by a CDM (Get fit asap Park Joo Ho!)

My issue with this is that Son seems to be at his best for us when we are playing top 2, and I certainly don't want us to play a formation with 3 center backs as it has not proven to work for us under our coaches. 1 top with either Son playing there might not be best utilizing his skills, or Son playing in the wings is going to be deja vu again where he will be expected to start attacks when that's not his forte.

But isn't this our strategy to advance, lol? I get it though -- I think what you're saying is as the clear weakest team in the group, this is our only strategy to advance while Sweden has better options when matched up against a weaker opponent.

Remember when Algeria would always park the bus in 2014 then throughly destroyed us when they randomly decided to play high press football against us? I sense something like this happening again in 2018..

A high press is risky, particularly if the team being pressured has defenders who can clear the ball long, and have a target to aim for. I'd be having all defenders practice powerful, resolute clearances when faced with pressure.

I feel like we are an (extremely) poor man's version of Netherlands of 2006-2016. Good, but not as good, attackers like Netherlands; and even worse defense than their relatively weak defense.

If you were rooting against the USA, then this qualifying cycle would've been very satisfying for you.

"Let's give an extension to our incompetent German who can't stop running his mouth and pissing off the players. Then let's replace him with an obsolete American who thinks tactics is something just for fancy Europeans, and who seems to be drawing his lineup from the MLS All-Star team of 2012."

I'm convinced that God purposely intervened during qualifying - not to make the USA lose (they did that themselves), but rather to let them win just enough games that they were set up in a situation where WC qualification almost a certainty. It made us all feel like we were safe, players were joking and getting their flights ready for Russia ... so it was even more crushing and traumatic to everyone afterwards when we were eliminated entirely from qualification (not even the playoff spot!) in a statistically and logically improbable result.

And how? By getting soundly and thoroughly defeated by friggin' Trinidad & Tobago...'s experimental local youth backup semi-pro/amateur/recreational league squad.

As a USA fan, watching that game felt like getting my lungs pulled out of my chest - but it was also really, really funny.

I watched the USA-TRI game during my grad school class and I almost laughed out loud in the middle of the lecture when Trinidad scored. my classmate told me that the US would 100% make it the day before and I told him that I think that Panama and Honduras will somehow win against Costa Rica and Mexico and that somehow I can see Trinidad winning. I was kinda shocked my predictions actually came true.

Even though I was born & raised in the US, I could never support their national teams because growing up all my white friends would make fun of Korea and hate on me because I supported Korea, all of this mostly around 2002 with the Ohno stuff and the WC, so I naturally only supported Korea and it was satisfying seeing the US fail to qualify but seeing my friends I felt for them, a lot of them were in shock and actually heartbroken. BUT on the bright side at least the US is making changes that will help in the long run. so many changes that are needed in Korea too but obviously won't happen as long as Chung Mong Gyu is KFA's president

^ I also root against the US. Not because i got made fun of or anything but because i really really hate usmnt fans, they're arrogant as hell and think they're so above every team that isn't the European/South American heavyweights and look down on Korea/Japan/Australia/etc so hard

not saying this is representative of all USMNT fans though ofc, my US friends who actually follow soccer and I talk all the time about how much it sucks to watch the KNT and the USMNT sometimes, but the general public / bandwagon USMNT fans, I think more so than the bandwagon WC-only KNT fans, are just unbearable to talk to

They also have American centric way of looking at world football meaning they look down on everybody and think they should be the best in the world. Also the American media feeds the fan with dumb bullshit like: if Lebron played soccer we will be the best, MLS will be equal to EPL in 10 years, We're going to win the WC in 2010. BS like that. Just hard to support a team that represents such a thing.

You can be a USMNT fan (as I am) and also dismiss such silly talk. There are stupid fans and biased pundits everywhere. You ignore them impassionately cause life is too short to deal with the uninformed.

I Don't hate all usmnt fans, I Don't understand them but I'm sure they have their own reasons. I'm not an American so I won't relate.
However, there is a narrative within American soccer that is drenched with American exceptionalism/entitlement that is hard to ignore. Especially if you are looking from the outside.

I used to think that the USA was the best team in the world because I'd only been exposed to players like Brian McBride and MLS teams through the backyard soccer and red card game series. How misinformed I was.

Psst! The Korean National Football Team finally came up with the secret weapon to beat Swenden!
Put in Shin Hyun Joon in the game and the Swedes will pass the ball to him thinking that he is Zlatan Ibrahimović. :)
