meh - enjoy the tournament.... was looking forward to going to the final, but can't now with this blockade. Off to Djibouti instead to dive with whale sharks and see the Planet of the Apes salt flats or whatever they are....
To date: UEFA: Real Madrid Club de Fútbol (Spain) CONMEBOL: TBD CONCACAF: Club de Fútbol Pachuca (Mexico) AFC: TBD CAF: Wydad Athletic Club (Morocco) OFC: Auckland City Football Club (New Zealand) Host: Al Jazira Club (UAE) Remaining games to determine participants: Nov 18 [Al Hilal - Urawa Reds] Nov 22 [Gremio - Lanus] Nov 25 [Urawa Reds - Al Hilal] Nov 29 [Lanus - Gremio] Dec 6 - First Match, UAE 2017
Yeah but I've heard stories of people actually being turned away at immigration in the UAE because they couldn't provide flight details to prove how they got to Oman. Seriously, happened to a Swedish guy we know the other week... so off to Djibouti instead, and to watch Qatar vs Icleland this week... that'll be my footy fix for the year...
Surely there is an unpatrolled sand dune... Well, my blockade is a domestic one. Wife insists that we have to attend a wedding in India in December. Probably can't even watch the final on TV.
Sure, in Delhi - not down in Kochi or Kolkata! The AFC CL final commences this Saturday in Riyadh. Road to the 2017 AFC Champions League final.
Al Hilal - Urawa Reds 1:1 Al Hilal were the better team and controlled most of the match but an early defensive blunder may have very well cost them the title. Up next, the first leg of the Libertadores final.
Watching the Copa Lib (South American) final, first leg. 1-0 to Gremio, the far better side. Next leg in Argentina though. Big fight at the end. Second leg should be good!
And the Asian champions are... Urawa Reds - Al Hilal 1:0 (2:1 on aggregate) They are the first J. League club to lift the trophy since Gamba Osaka in 2008. It is their second ACL title after 2007. Over both legs Al Hilal appeared to be the more capable side but they truly lacked a "big game mentality" as evident in the stupid red card by Al Dawsari. I also don't understand why Omar Kharbin, the leading goal scorer of the ACL with 10 goals, was pulled early. In any case, congrats to Urawa Reds. PS: This final series set a new ACL attendance record.
One game left until all participants are known. After having had the "wrong" winners in both, the African and Asian final, the ticket sales team must be really pulling for Gremio. Porto Alegre city rivals SC Internacional brought something like 12,000 fans to the UAE in 2010 (only to lose to TP Mazembe in the semis).
The second leg of the Copa Libertadores final is tonight. In a matter of hours all seven clubs will be known.
Gremio are the last club to book their UAE ticket. It is their first Copa Libertadores since 1995 and third overall. Time for the tournament thread. @Paul Calixte - Nuevo mod, close this one will you?
This puts Gremio, along with Sao Paolo and Santos, as the only Brazilian clubs to have won the tournament more than twice. Strange that the biggest clubs are nowhere near as successful, such as Flamengo, Corinthians, Fluminense, Cruzeiro, Vasco, etc.
Sao Paulo is bigger than Fluminense, Cruzeiro, Vasco. I would say Gremio are on the same level as Cruzeiro. The biggest 2 teams by fan following in Brazil are Flamengo and Corinthians followed by Sao Paulo and Palmeiras. If you look at Italy, Juve is much bigger than AC Milan domestically but in the CL Milan has more titles. So that happens.
But why are the clubs from Rio so much less successful historically than the Paulistas? Palmeiras is bigger than Fluminense, you sure about that?
Because we are better Historically the Paulista teams have been better managed and have more money. Flamengo as an example, has been badly managed for ages. They are only getting their shit together in the last couple of years. And Sao Paulo is a much bigger city than Rio even if Rio is more famous internationally.
Not really, they looked toothless at goal because they were. Less capable than Urawa. Props to the ACL for good attendance. Doesn't look like the CCL will ever get to ACL's popularity level. The return to straight KOs is a step backwards. Reminder to USAns, the CWC will be on free TV for the first time ever this year. Probably just the Pachuca games and Final, but even the 2ndary channel has more reach than Fox Sports Spanish. Great step forward, and the adverts for the games have been solid so far.
Fair enough. Would you agree that most greats for the Selecao have come from Rio de Janeiro however? Sorry about derailing the thread.
Quite a few but not quite. Let's look: Ronaldo - Rio Romario - Rio Zico - Rio Pele - from Minas Gerais but grew up in state of Sao Paulo played for Santos Garrincha - from Rio Rivelino - from Sao Paulo -> Corinthians Falcao - from Santa Catarina -> Internacional - RS Socrates - from Sao Paulo state -> Botafogo (of Sao Paulo) Careca - from Sao Paulo state -> Guarani (Sao Paulo) Neymar - from Sao Paulo state started at Santos Kaka - from Sao Paulo Jairzinho - from Rio Rivaldo - from the north ... then went to Mogi Mirim in Sao Paulo ... then Corinthians Roberto Carlos - from Sao Paulo state ... Uniao Sao Joao -> Palmeiras Cafu - from Sao Paulo Tostao - from Minas Gerais Carlos Alberto - Rio Djalma Santos - Minas Gerais started at Portuguesa in Sao Paulo Didi - Rio Zito - Sao Paulo Nilton Santos - Rio Bebeto - from the North ... came to Rio Dunga - from Rio Grande do Sul Dani Alves - from the North Paulinho - Sao Paulo ...
http://www.livesoccertv.com/competitions/international/fifa-club-world-cup/ has the schedule. Telemundo (free TV) will have 4 games. According to http://www.broadcastingcable.com/co...sehold-universe-estimates-january-2016/153590 for January 2016, NBC Universo (the secondary channel) is in 96 percent more households than Fox Deportes, which surprised me.
