I totally agree, I just don't think it's going to get better until we have a three league Pro/Rel system. There just isn't enough opportunity for young players to participate in a professional environment.

Locally MPLS City is a great little club, how long will they be around without any financial incentive to improve? How long will the owner throw money at something he has no chance of a return on?

We are in an unsustainable soccer market and economy and without change, we will never reach our potential as a soccer nation.

So when I wrote that, Eddie was on my mind as the one player you could argue. He was fantastic in the 2002 world cup but we should expect much more from this country.

We have more kids playing soccer right now than the entire country of Belgium and we have never produced a World Class player (Christian is close, but not there yet)

Well Jesse Marsch just came out in favor of pro/rel. And I am a fan of it for reasons detailed elsewhere. I agree we'll never come close to maximizing our potential without out. Landscape and population is just far too big. It would make more sense for a closed system actually, if we were a tiny Euro nation.

However, that's not the main reason we aren't developing quality players. All you really need is a ball and a love for the game. Then obsess and practice from an early age. Pulisic played hours and hours alone. Dembele took the ball everywhere with him as a kid. Same with Neymar who dribbled all day every day as a kid.

Then you look at our players and it's patently obvious they did not.

I used to think that, too. But at this point, MLS never plays youngster like it used to. Carleton being the No. 1 example. While our youngsters actually get opportunities in Europe.

That's what usually happens to CBs, unfortunately. They age worse than anyone else. Very small margin of error, I guess. And nowhere to be moved. Not sure that Cameron isn't next. He might be a serviceable DM but be done as CB.

It's interesting, but kind of weird. ~250 clubs separate the top and bottom of MLS. Toronto is rated better than a couple clubs in the prem, but four (dismal, true) bottom MLS clubs are rated lower than the bottom feeders in ligue 2.
It's a fun idea. But once you get beyond the clubs that compete in inter league comps, it's difficult to rank anyone. the transitive stuff is always a poor gauge, and there's no other way beyond FM.
For what it's worth, whereever they fall, my sense is that MLS is generally in a pretty tight band. Not saying they'd be a clump of 22 in rankings such as these, but the numbers would be pretty close.

a random question but how does MLS rank compared to the mid-tier leagues in Europe like Turkey/Belgium/Switzerland? Belgium has loads of youth talent so that def gives them an edge though many of those seem to jump shift before they become mega-stars in the league.

Also quite interesting how Portugal. A somewhat poor nation of 11 million can have the 5th/6th best league in Europe. And have 2 clubs that regularly get to the round of 16/QF of the Champions League and can beat much bigger clubs on anyday.

You've had guys like Hulk, Falcao, Costa. Guys who score maybe 20-25 goals for a season or 2 in Portugal and get transfers of 40-50 million euros. And these guys are arguably world-class stars even if they score a bunch against the small clubs in their league.

Overall, I find the Portuguese league interesting.

    1. Portugal is precisely the kind of league that the coefficient doesn't rank properly. It's incredibly top heavy.
    2. Brazil was a Portuguese colony, so that helps them bring in Brazilian talent.

i kinda wonder what the Portuguese might think of there being so many Brazilian talent flooding the league. Or maybe they see the similiarities and not rank it as an issue.

Hopefully MLS won’t ruin them by offering them a huge amount of money to come back during their prime

While I love the hyperbole, do you think it's a good idea from a USMNT perspective if WM came to MLS while in his prime?

Why is that even an issue? Why bring up MLS other than to thank FCDallas for spending 7 years developing him? I'm just sick of self loathing US soccer fans shitting on MLS at every opportunity.

I'm not sure why acknowledging that there are higher levels than MLS is "shitting" or "self-loathing". Is it "self-loathing" to be a college basketball fan while still acknowledging that our best players will hopefully move onto the pros, maybe even in a one-and-done? What about rooting for a minor league baseball team?

More succinctly, from a USMNT and YA perspective, it's an issue because we want our top players playing in top leagues and MLS isn't there yet.

I do agree that FCD's DA program deserves a lot of respect and kudos for WM. Hopefully, there's a lot more of that.

I don't want to see him in MLS. I want to see him in the real big time of turning down a Champions League team for a huge deal in China.

I think we all know that comment was related to a very specific instance that has nothing to do with McKennie or really MLS vs the Bundesliga.

Not sure why I have to be "self loathing" to despise a league that is against freedom and uses their riches for influence peddling to skirt what is the law in this country.

They have underpay players and restrict movement of players within the league since their is really only one true employer.

Even if MLS was above the level of shit football (it isn't.) We saw what happened when a MLS puppet was hired and leaned on the top MLS players. Yup that failure is in part at the feet of the crappy ass league known as MLS.

I will not watch until they do away with single entity and obey labor laws like most of the rest of the industrialized modern world.

Thank you, I hope more people share our viewpoint in the coming months, and have experienced an awakening of sorts due to the massive failure we experienced not qualifying.

The increasing problem is MLS' model and intention is anti-NT. So some people, I dunno, might have a problem with parts of MLS' model which hurts the NT since we can't even making the frickin WC, apparently.

This for me is an anti-NT statement. Garber would gladly hurt the NT and Pulisic's development if he could, just to make some money off him.

Did he worry about Italy when he signed Giovinco? Sounds like Garber is taking a stand against nationalism. He'll take the best players possible regardless of whose NT may be negatively affected.

Now that the title races in the top 3 leagues are essentially over, what is there to talk about?

Europe needs a serious revamping. Champions League should be expanded as the main competition. More money, better parity, more interest. Domestic leagues should be relegated to the respective cups.

Yup let us ruin football by americanizing it and making it all about playoffs. Cl , euro and relegation battles are still going strong. The bundesliga fell victim to the PL, Barca PSG and Real snatching up all the talent with their lack of real FFP and mega rich owners.

Football's strength is the local club the midtable folks that buy tickets and subscribe to Tv packages for the footy. Take that way and it is all falling action after that.
