The story of our soccer watching lives: let's look forward. Bello, Reyna and Busio are probably the big names to look out for this cycle, whom else?

I’ll say Mason Judge is one to watch. Really liked him in the CONCACAF championship. Alvarez, if he ever switches back. Think Gaines has some potential, too.

    Pynadath
    Las
    Ocampo-Chavez
    Fuentes

This will be the first U17 cycle where there'll be quite a few players who will have a lot of pro minutes under their belt by the time the 2019 U17 WC rolls around. Some really promising '03s too like Sealy, Neyman, Killeen. The latter two are late year '03s.

IMO Pynadath is definitely one to keep an eye on

And no Bradenton. I'm especially curious to see how development changes with players playing for their academy teams and only the occasional U17 tournament.

Early on, I like this cycle's defense and keeping. Midfield looks a big problem, and the offense might be very overrated. What we get out of Nyeman, Pynadath, potentially Alvarez could answer the questions at the latter two positions.

Goalie: Las is definitely the one to watch here, IMO. The kid looked like the team's best player at the Italy tournament, was an absolute beast, actually looked lightyears ahead of the competition, you'd have thought he was about five years older. Then he looked pretty bad the two games I saw at the CONCACAF U-15 tournament, although I don't think thats a fair reflection of his game. He's been playing with Chicago's U-18's (only a few other 03's are doing the same with their clubs), and he seems really advanced for a keeper his age. Big keeper with good reflexes, mostly very consistent. Could be yet another cycle where we have another great keeper.

Defenders: These guys looked very good. Bello has tons of potential, very raw, but all the tools are there and I've seen him dominate at times. Judge, Alejandro and Nielsen all looked like really advanced CB's with Alejandre being the most mobile and best on the ball of the three, and Judge the most well-rounded of the three. Nielsen seemed a step down from the other two, but a talented player as well. Scally at RB is really under the radar, IMO. December 31 birthday, but he has a lot of potential. Really athletic player, he's the best header of the ball on the team, despite playing RB. Good getting forward down the right side, but also competent defensively, along with athleticism and height. I think he could probably also play CB and CDM (have seen him play well at CB). He's another one playing with his club team's U-18's.

Midfielders: I think this group is rather weak from the 02's I've seen. Atencio is tall and might be able to play a #6 role, don't see much else here. Fuentes is one of the side's more prominent players, I have not been all that impressed. Good ball control from a #10 role, but I don't see a ton else in his game, just my opinion, of course. If we count Nyeman ('03), this CM looks a whole lot better. IMO, Nyeman is the top player for this cycle, even if he's a year younger than the 02's, and a November '03. He is already very good, and has ridiculous tools. Looks a cross between Paul Pogba and Ousmane Dembele in terms of style of play, from what I've seen. I think he could probably play any of the midfield or forward positions, although I'd play him as a #10. Lets see how his game develops.

Attackers: I think this group is a little weak, although they get a lot of publicity. Just not seen a ton of creativity and nice football from this group, so far. I do like Reyna's game. He's not the most exciting player, but he's a very good attacking midfielder. Technical, smart, good size (deceptively athletic, I'd say), capable of scoring and assisting, enough flair. Ocampo-Chavez also looks good. I wouldn't say he's the team's best player yet or anything like that, but similar to Sargent early last cycle, there are tools there that could translate to a very good player with some more development. Good size, makes good runs, reasonably fast, good finisher, works hard, probably even better technical ability than Sargent had. Gaines gets publicity, but I don't see such a high ceiling. I see the same exact type of game as his brother, which probably is eventually a pro player, but I'm not sure he's a potential star or anything like that.

Busio's another one who I think I'm lower on than some others. I see a player who's more toolsy than particularly good right now at any one aspect, and I'm not sure his tools are elite in the same way that Nyeman's are or even Bello's, if they hit their ceilings. I also haven't seen such great performances yet, but he's still a young player, and I might very well be wrong. Pynadath I've not seen play, but from the highlights I've seen, he looks like he could be one of this cycle's better players, hard to know though without watching him play. Alvarez I think would be one of this cycle's best players, but he's playing for Mexico. Sealy is one of the more talented 03's, but I don't think he's yet ready to compete with the top 02's like Nyeman is, maybe he can start out as a bench option. Nice size, athletic, good goal scorer and smart, but I haven't yet seen much assertiveness in making a big impact.

Don't know if this was a typo or not, but Las is an '02.

Mostly agree. Think Busio is a little overrated but he has some good finishing ability for a player his age. Very inconsistent in possession and not the best in the build up. Kind of the same issues I had with Sargent 2 years ago actually. Wasn’t super impressed with Fuentes, but he has some skill and could grow. Think Scally has some talent and makes some good plays, but also has some lapses and is a little inconsistent. Wasn’t especially impressed with Ocampo-Chavez, but saw him in limited action.

I did see one game of Pynadath’s, along with many highlights. He has some good technical ability and seems to make some good decisions and has good ability in the attacking third. He’s undersized, tho, and in the game I saw, he wasn’t the main focus of the offense or even heavily involved. When he did get the ball, he was productive and dynamic tho

Are we sure the Nike Friendlies are happening this year? I've seen no announcement yet.

Maybe no tournament this year because of the World Cup just concluding?

In 2015 the U17 WC ended on Nov. 8 and the Nike Friendlies were still held in Dec.

Hmm, that is weird that there’s been no mention of this year’s tournament.

    It is still early.

In 2015 there was no mention of the Nike Fridlies til the end of November. I could be wrong but I think there will be another tournament this year.

Video scouting report on Gio Reyna from Travis Clark of TopDrawerSoccer. Clark calls him "the next star of the U17 national team."

I think Reyna might be this team's best offensive player this cycle, probably the favorite if we are speaking of odds, but I personally do not think he's on par with the better offensive players of the last two cycles. I think that speaks to the lack of offensive talent on this team currently. It could change. Adding Alvarez would help a lot, maybe Pynadath is a big time player, I think Ocampo-Chavez has big time potential even though he doesn't start for this team right now, and Nyeman would be a big add if he ever joins this team, but as we saw in the game against Mexico, the offense of this team is currently rather weak.

Lopez, for the record, is a big attacker from California who was part of the U15 setup.

They also put Zelalem ahead of Carleton and Taitague. That's all you need to know about them and their list.

And presumably no Pomykal. Its a hype list, also has Weah rather high.

Doesn't accurately rank these players, IMO. I like Reyna, but there's no way I'd put him ahead of Bello, in terms of best '02 prospects. Reyna might be better right now, but Bello has such high potential. I'm not even sure Reyna's the best '02 prospect at NYCFC, and I actually really like his game, yet the hype he gets because of who his father is (same thing Jonathan Klinsmann and Tim Weah got) does influence these types of lists.

I am a sucker for Reyna atm. Think he will be our u-17 star hopefully with Pynadath. Reyna will be similar to Carleton in that he will be super dangerous from set pieces and technically af. We really only need 2 star attackers. If we can get a good supporter cast like perez, akinola etc. We will be fine.
