Pellegrini. We have a strong core still for one more World Cup.

Here is the goal that knocked Chile out. An absolute freak goal:
Just watch first 2 minutes of the video.

First of all, is it even a free kick? I mean is that really a high boot, or a low header?

Then, it's an indirect free kick so why is Guerrero shooting at goal? I guess he doesn't know the rules or see/recognize the ref's hand signal. And not one of his team mates had a word with him either?? Honestly, footballers are dumb sometimes. If his shot had gone in without the keeper's touch, it wouldn't have counted.

Also, if the Colombian goalkeeper Ospina had known it was an indirect free kick, then he could have stood there and just let it go in, and Chile would be in the playoff.

What a shambles. Peru are very lucky. Complete fluke goal in all respects.

Maybe there was just some confusion before the free kick with so much at stake. We may never know.

I actually don't mind that Peru is in the WC. They hung in there, and had a good qualifying campaign, not to mention that they'd been a stoic underdog in the last couple of Copa America events. Their manager needed to get something more out of the team, and he got it.

Certain managers tend to only agree to terms to manage a team if there is a serious project in place, preferably one with some potential or upside. Pellegrini falls into that category, in my opinion. I agree with you that the core is still there, but it's not what it used to be. Díaz and Medel are two examples of players who were part of that core, and both seem pretty spent. That leaves Vidal, Aránguiz and Alexis. I don't think that keepers count, and the rest are either marginal (Hernández), role players (Isla) or inconsistent (Turbo-man).

Personally, I'd like a new manager to come in and announce an overhaul; sort of what like Bielsa did when he arrived, which was perfect. The standard clearly dropped many qualifying rounds ago, which tells me that many players are not at the level required to compete with the best. If it were down to me, I would introduce a team selection policy where any player under the age of 30 playing in Mexico is ineligible to represent the national team.

    That's nothing against Pellergrini, either.

To be fair, I have never heard that rule before last night. Its odd, it seems you learn a new but rare rule when you least want it.

It's laughable to think we are better than the teams bolded. Uruguay has one the most lethals attacking duo in the world, plus Godin-Giménez, starters in Internazionale, prospects alternating in the Juventus squad or starters in Boca. Furthermore, they also have actual alternatives on the bench (Rolan, Abel Hernández, Coates, De Arrascaeta and so on).
As for the Colombians. I watch them playing on ESPN, Fox all the time, not on Canal de las Estrellas or livestreams (Turkey). They also have better players and a deeper pool in actual leagues. I mean, there are five Colombians in Boca Juniors alone, while our coach calls up three players from freaking Cruz Azul. Give me a break. Then we wonder what is the problem when it is prettey evident.

I will say it again. We need players competing against the best in the world on weekly basis. If you never face them besides the national team matches, it is quite dificult to achieve something.

I am not a fan of his, I think his football is somewhat outdated, but I guess he can still be good for a NT.
Then again I am quite ignorant about the southern american manager scene so I wouldn't be able to propose an alternative.

I am gonna be controversial and say the coach will not matter for the following years. There simply isn't enough talent. However we will probably qualify anyway cause the World Cup will be expanded thanks to Infantino.

How isn't there talent? The Copa America winners core is mostly still there. It's way more talent than any South American side not named Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

Because they are old and most will retire or only assist as the typical veteran late-sub.

But for 2022 Chile will need new players, which we don't have at the moment. We got plenty of time to build something though.

You need intensity to win nowadays... even Italy should realise this. You can't get away with playing older players at the highest level anymore.

Sure, if the target is 2022 you need a new cycle, no doubt.
The question is: has this been a golden generation by luck, or because of a planned development programme?

New players may not come from our present U17 who lost to England 4-0 and today to Iraq 3-0.

Luck. A good timing of talent + Bielsa to nurture that talent early.

Honestly, I've said this a million times but I don't care for U17. And I would stand by this statement even if we won an U17 World Cup.

U20 and over I start paying attention. At U17 there is still a lot of body and mind development going on. It's too early to draw any conclusions.

I agree with everything except your final point. We weren't part of the winners circle until this team made it a reality.

Just like every elimination, etc. I'm all ready thinking about how to resolve our current issues and to deal with what is needed for the long term.

Coaching is obviously way too important. The only name that comes to mind is Berizzo who can best replicate a style that I have grown accustomed to.

Realistically, we can only count on a few of the players from this current golden generation that can stick around and help with the rebuilding. Players such as Medel, Aranguiz, Alexis, and Vidal can still contribute but will all be between the ages of 32-34 by 2021.

I think Chile is the best team not going to Russia.

It's gotta be a coach that the players will respect. Not just another Joe Somebody who takes the job only to fill up his pockets.

Bad idea.
