as you can see by the results, the current reigning kings of asia are not in a good position at the moment. we have stumbled through qualification like a drunken australian getting kicked out of a pub whilst on a contiki tour through mexico

and as much as i respect syria as a country and team i believe we know who will most likely win in the playoffs between australia and syria....

which leads me to my next question....will asia and AFC unite as one, hold hands in union, and offer their unconditional support to mother australia as we attempt to defeat those north american devils?

i know not everyone here seems to be fond of australia, but im putting out my hand as a token of friendship and goodwill so that we may forge together as one - looking at their qualifiers the opponent might actually end up being panama or better yet, USA!

this also doubles as a chance for us as a region to reaffirm our domination over their confederation! what say yall???

State of offers in Australian national team is more like King Robert Baratheon of GOT.

And the rest of BIg 4 Asian teams are like Ned Stark, ready to get butchered in WC 2018 by other giant teams.

Depends. If it's Panama vs Syria/Aus, I would root for Panama. Honduras or the nads? I hope the lose. Big time.

Pump the breaks. You have to beat Syria- and that isn't going to be easy.

Australia got four points off of Saudi Arabia yet they drew against Iraq (on neutral territory) and Thailand (in Bangkok). They still could have qualified if they just beat Thailand by more than one goal.

Australia put themselves in this situation- if they fall short- they'll only have themselves to blame.

Back to Syria, if you thought Jordan was tough.... oh boy are you in for a rude awakening. If this game is played somewhere in the Middle East- Australia will really be up against it.

australia will advance over syria for sure. you have to realize that australia dropped points against iraq because it was part of a 10 game campaign. they also only beat thailand 2-1 because they were under pressure, and thailand could afford to sit back. but a 2 legged playoff will be different, usually the team who plays better will advance. i dont syria stopping australia over 2 games.

Australia had a four game stretch of draws. A draw against Saudi was followed up by a home draw vs. Japan and then they were lucky to draw vs. Thailand away. Then they drew against Iraq in Iran.

They haven't been up to snuff in qualifying.

The fear is that a Syria-Honduras playoff would just be a game of players chopping each other down.

An Australia-USA Playoff is fun because both are regulars and its a major indicator of CONCACAF vs AFC strength

Man... Australia is going to need a lot more help. A good team puts Syria away tonight. Australia got worse as the game went on.

It now looks to be Panama or Honduras.

The thing is, both were just dealt a heavy blow to their confidence, and it's very possible neither of them could get a good result on their final matches, but one of them is still going to playoffs.

AFC potentially to face a depressed 4th placed Concacaf.

I think Asia is gonna take this one.

Honduras gets real violent in CONCACAF against smaller teams there and get away with it... against Australia/Syris they will get hit straight back.

Both teams have absolutely atrocious finishing too

Who you think will win? Australia needs to be play a little smarter imo, Honduras are very good at time-wasting imo, no offense intended. Kinda like Syria and other teams.

Pinto is a very shrewd fellow with an extremely limited squad. It does not matter, tho. What Australia need to do is hearken back to past experiences from the Montevideo games, and then start making a much grittier picture, and then some. I do not think you ever get to play this kind of away match in Asia. (Perhaps Jordan away)

IMO, Honduras don't deserve to go to the world cup by any stretch. But at the end of the day, it's two big matches and many, many extraneous factors in play. This is not just about squad depth and raw talent. It could go either way.
