I'm guessing b/c the ref sent him off, and it wasn't malicious (i.e. one can reasonably argue that he was going for the ball), even if it was all kinds of reckless.

A good day in the office for El Salvador...and for yours truly (3-for-3 so far!).

But I would be remiss not to highlight that after playing Champions League football for the better part of the last decade, Real Estelí finally won a game! :D Too bad they let it go to waste on penalties (btw: how did the CONCACAF announcer not know that extra time wouldn't be played?!)...

I got 2 out of 3. I predicted Real Esteli to advance.

    Yesterday's second legs:

Arabe Unido 3-0 Central (5-1 aggregate)
    Alajuelense 0-1 Olimpie (0-3 aggregate)
Belmopan 0-1 Walter Ferretti (1-5 aggregate)

    Quarterfinals Dates:

Chorillo vs. Santos de Guapiles on August 15 and 22
Aguila vs. Arabe Unido on August 16 and 23
Alianza vs. Olimpia on August 17 and 24
Walter Ferretti vs. Plaza Amador on August 17 and 24

Both legs of the first three pairings will be at 10:00 P.M. and both legs of Walter Ferretti vs. Plaza Amador will be at 8:00 P.M. Every club plays both legs on the same day of the week, which isn't always the case. In the Round of 16 five out of eight pairings played both legs on the same day of the week.

The quarterfinals schedule (times U.S. Eastern, home team first).

    First leg

    Tuesday, August 15:

Chorrillo FC (PAN) vs. Santos de Guápiles (CRC), 10:00 p.m.

    Wednesday, August 16:

Águila (SLV) vs. Árabe Unido (PAN), 10:00 p.m.

    Thursday, August 17:

Walter Ferretti (NCA) vs. Plaza Amador (PAN), 8:00 p.m.
Alianza (SLV) vs. Olimpia (HON), 10:00 p.m.

    Second leg

    Tuesday, August 22:

Santos de Guápiles (CRC) vs. Chorrillo FC (PAN), 10:00 p.m.

    Wednesday, August 23:

Árabe Unido (PAN) vs. Águila (SLV), 10:00 p.m.

    Thursday, August 24:

Plaza Amador (PAN) vs. Walter Ferretti (NCA), 8:00 p.m.
Olimpia (HON) vs. Alianza (SLV), 10:00 p.m.

Btw, it looks like Univisión Deportes Network will stick to giving preference to Copa MX on Tuesday and Wednesday and showing CL games live on Thursday.

That link says Walter Ferretti has a Nicaraguan league game today, the day before their CONCACAF League game. Luckily, Soccerway says their Nicaraguan league game was postponed.

    Chorrillo 0-1 Santos de Guapiles

I figured it would be postponed, but it had not been postponed at the time of writing. Good for Walter Ferretti, I hope they give Plaza Amador a tough series.

It doesn't matter. It really doesnt. The second MLS is on par with Liga MX, MLS Liga MX and other big SA leagues will start pushing hard for a joint champions league and CCl will get thrown into the trash bin. Theres alot of money that could be made with a joint cl and practically everyone knows it but not if MLS is getting thrashed. So we wait until that doesn't happen.

You can disagree but it will happen. Conmebol already had to do a collective bargaining agreement to keep teams happy aka silent for the time being. Big SA clubs want to turn into big international clubs and sadly Copa isnt cutting it on the world stage in its current form.

Once MLS can compete in the not so distant future(hopefully) and along with Liga MX A TEAMS joining yes of course. That should be a given.

A joint CL is the future period. First edition is a 300m purse easy. Hell it would probably be a 300m purse right now. But that would fade fast it MLS teams are getting BTFO.10 to 15 years down the road when MLS can compete and is a bit more popular it will be a gold mine for everyone involved.

You can laugh, sneer, jeer, eye roll IDGAF. The Americas are waiting for US/MLS to catch up whether they know it or not. From a competitive standpoint CCC and CONMEBOL must coexist and not allow UEFA CL to go unanswered.

Mexico has already participated and will likely again. The only real addition your mentioning is mls. The MLS is built to be what it is. It's going to be a lot more than 15 years before it can even dream of what you think it will be

Árabe Unido held on to the lead on aggregate in spite of playing most of tonight's match a man down, limiting Águila to a 1-0 win and overcoming them 2-1 overall to advance to the semifinals.

Mind you, it is now confirmed that Santos de Guápiles will host the second leg of their series with Árabe Unido thanks to their superior record (12 pts., +6 GD); and unless Alianza somehow win by 4 in Tegucigalpa tomorrow, Santos de Guápiles will be the top seed for the rest of this tournament.

I don't think Mexico has ever sent a A team/club down there. I dont follow Liga MX but I'm sure the fans and clubs are eager to have some legit big games against SA clubs regularly.

All I'm saying is MLS and Liga MX will be required to have viewership from Canada to Chile. Other small leagues will obviously be a part too.

15 years is a very realistic time frame. MLS is a very ambitious league and could see a popularity explosion if we land a world cup. The league is very competitive and becomes more and more watchable and talented every year. MLS doesn't need to win just compete

There will be a America's Champion League, as Silva calls it, eventually but the idiot doesn't understand you don't crack the egg before it hatches. In this case a golden egg.

There's no amount of prize money that can decrease the travel time from New York to Buenos Aires. Fans of English clubs don't like Champions League travel far east to Russia or Ukraine. I think all other things equal that fans of South American clubs would rather their club be grouped with a club in the southern USA like FC Dallas than have to go to Seattle or New York. I think fans of MLS clubs would rather their club face clubs in northern South America. Players can get tired from travel to a midweek game with weekend domestic games on both sides, and it would be bad if clubs didn't bring their best players to away games.

Tigres when they reached the Final?

If anything, the gap between the Mexican Apertura final and when those finalists participate in CONCACAF tournaments means that Mexico has been able to send its best teams (provided they're not participating in that same season's CCL) to the Copa Libertadores. If they've ever elected not to commit their best players to chasing that trophy, they can't place the blame on CONCACAF - there's no arbitrary rule in place like what Blazer used to impose on Mexico's NT for playing in the Copa América.

Travel is a real negative I'll give you that. The biggest uncertainty is fan behavior. Sponsorship can dry up fast and sink the tournament if something bad happens.

At the end of the day money talks and alot could be made. I don't think anyone can deny that. CONMEBOL holds all the cards though but the bigger the CL gets the harder it is going to be to appease their big clubs. Several already want to have a big Champion League in the Americas. They want to go global.

You continue to show you are just pulling this stuff out of the air. Mexico has sent A clubs to the libertadores.

MLS has shown impressive growth but they aren't ambitious. You can't have salary restrictions and be ambitious. Over the next few years the MLS will continue to focus on expansion which will continue to dilute an already somewhat unimpressive talent pool. NASL level players will continue to be called upon to fill in the extra slots. It will be far more than 15 years before improving the level of play is the main focus and even than it will take some time to figure out how to make that happen at the level you are thinking of

It will never be on par with LMX. SA doesn't really care about including CONCACAF teams, they were meh about Mexico leaving.

There will NEVER be an all-America CL. Mexico will be the only CONCACAF league to play the Liberators Cup. Your dreams will never become reality.

Sadly, the Lib Cup has probably already hit its ceiling. Maybe after Messi retires, he will buy Newell's or become head of SA football, and that will give it life. But the UCL is too much of a monster to compete with.

    Carlos Costly, you legend!!!

So here are the semifinals, rankings in brackets and the home team (for the 2nd leg) first:

[1] Santos de Guápiles (CRC) vs. [2] Árabe Unido (PAN)

[3] Olimpia (HON) vs. [4] Plaza Amador (PAN)

And based on these seedings, the Tiburcio Carias is off the table: this tournament's ending either at the Rommel (w/Árabe hosting) or the Estadio Nacional in Costa Rica.

...eh, now that I think about it: neither Santos nor Árabe get to play CONCACAF games in their home city - here's hoping locals show up to support "one of ours", or we'll face an underwhelming end before a non-sold-out stadium.
